The arrangments heard on the OSTs for many of these films are very different from the ones on the album ("Cadillac of the Skies" is a great example). Anybody know who wrote these new verisions?

Also, are there any that are different enough from the OST versions that they're worth buying? The only ones I own are "Cadillac of the Skies," "Parade of Slave Children," "Summon the Heroes," "Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra," and "Theme from Far and Away."

I think all the tracks on the set are available elsewhere. If you have the Spielberg/Williams Collaboration album, you'll already own a good chunk of the music on the set.

It really is a great collection, no JW fan should be without one. I can't imagine anybody but Williams himself writing all the arrangements. Otherwise, it's a set I usually lend to friends with little or no knowledge of great film music. Managed to get one or two hooked already, too. ;)

They're all Williams arranged and conducted.

Another piece significantly different from the OST is "Flight to Neverland" from Hook

Jurassic Park Theme is also different, but the faster pace of the noble theme doesn't do much for me.

And the CE3K suite isn't on the OST, but it's been recorded a few times.

Williams on Williams and The Spielberg Williams Collaboration are must haves.

I'd recommend Williams on Williams over Greatest Hits.

Btw Theme from Schindler's List is also different from OST, it's the Utah Symphony Orchestra rendition.

Don't you mean the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra? The performance is from the Cinema Serenade album.

Williams wrote them, of course... You should buy the whole set; excellent recordings.

yes but it was by a man named Ted Williams, who is a Boston Catholic High School lay teacher of music. He's John's first cousin, and he often collaborates with John. Many of Ted's students are in the choirs used for the Boston Pops.

Yeah I heard about this when I bought the set 5 years ago. This Ted Williams is a decent arranger it appears.

Of course we have to be careful and not confuse him with the late, great Ted Williams who played for the Boston Red Sox.

considering how young most are, and how many are european, and no nothing about baseball, I don't think thats an issue

Of course, thanks :)

I actually never really liked this up-tempo version very much.

What are Boston Red Sox?

it is one of the American League Baseball teams.

One with some of the greatest tradition in baseball history.

Same here, IMHO it's the weakest point of the entire set. That fast tempo really doesn't suit the theme, so I usually just skip that track. :D

I also own that album, just for the sake of owning it!

I have most of the recordings on their respective albums, but the highlight would be The Reivers (just included so they can advertise it as 1969-, I'm sure). Does anyone have the original album?

Good point. The banjo part of the track is delicious, I always listen to it 2 or 3 times in a row, too bad it's only a few seconds.:D

I can only get into baseball if I watch it in person, even then it's my least favorite sport. I prefer pro football and golf.

I think here we call baseball softball. I was very bad at it in high school gym class :D

softball is different from baseball, while the field and most rules are the same, the ball is much different, its larger and easier to hit, and its pitched differently, plus they use aluminum bats. its much more of a hitters game, while baseball is a pitcher's game. major league baseball uses only wooden bats.

Boston fans have been coming to Baltimore for years whenever the Sox come to town, which was fine because it always makes the crowd atmosphere more exciting. But since 2004 they have become obnoxious as hell. They rival only New York fans in utter rudeness.

there was a time when Baltimore won, and the same could be said about there fans. The Orioles all time greatest 3rd baseman went to school with my mom and dad(who played ball with him). I knew his father who was a fireman at the LR airport.

Everyone knows that the Sox have nothing to live for after their brilliantly exacuted vendetta on The Yankees.

I don't think so, attendance was fair during the Orioles glory years considering how great the team was. I doubt Orioles fans invaded another park and were so obnoxious when games here didn't sell out.

I have The Reivers. And not only is it a very good score, but the fact that it was one of two scores which made Spielberg notice Williams warrants its inclusion in a compilation like this.

The Reivers is arguably his best pre-Jaws score, a turning point for JW for a variety of reasons.

By the way, the Birds beat the Sox last night 10-6 :D

I've never picked up this album, because this is a mix of OST recordings and previous recordings right? I think I have them all on other CDs...

I never felt the need to get it. I still need Williams on Williams though.

Yes you do.

This set just about single-handedly made me a JW fan. And I like that the arrangements often differ from the album versions. Makes the sporadic returns to the set enjoyable time and time again.

It's better than Williams on Williams. In fact, it's the best JW compilation album.

It was my first Williams CD, and also got me hooked.
