I'm cheating with my #1 pick.  Previously I've been excluding live albums, and this is one where the version I'm specifying wasn't officially released as a standalone CD until 1999.  But Stop Making Sense is so obviously THE musical achievement of the year I had to put it #1.

Also I love Purple Rain, but I'm categorizing it as soul/R&B/funk/disco so left it off here.  Maybe I'll do a list of favorite 70s and 80s R&B/funk albums like I did favorite hip hop albums for the 90s.  I know Prince is a multi-genre artist, but that's the decision I made!

You also cheat by having two seperate albums in one spot so... ;)

I've been doing that since I went back to the 70s!  This '84 list is a bit cheating though because Hatful of Hollow is a compilation and not an album album..... oh well!

If a band releases two albums in a year (so much more common back in those days), I allow myself to rank them together if Ilike them basically equally.

Oh and for the record:

Really this is a genre I engage with more through singles than albums, so some essential artists that didn't do classic albums aren't on this list (most notably, James Brown who was on fire in the early 70s with songs like "Super Bad", "Sex Machine", and "Make It Funky")

1970s Soul/Funk/Disco

Chic - self-titled
Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life
Al Green - Al Green Explores Your Mind
War - The World is a Ghetto
Sly and the Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On
Parliament - Mothership Connection

Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
The O'Jays - Back Stabbers
The Spinners - self-titled
Marvin Gaye - I Want You
KC and the Sunshine Band - self-titled
The Isley Brothers - Givin' It Back
Isaac Hayes - Black Moses
Earth, Wind, & Fire - The Best of Earth, Wind, & Fire, Vol. 1
Bill Withers - Still Bill
Bee Gees et. al. - Saturday Night Fever
Tower of Power - Back to Oakland
Booker T. & The MG's - Melting Pot
Gladys Knight & The Pips - Imagination
Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes - self-titled

No. You finish the 80's first! I need to be able to post the rest of my list!

That's where we started all this!

This whole thing began when I posted this on 12/31, then I went back and did '85 and then kept going up through 2010 or whatever.  Then back to 1970, forward to 1984, and now I'll go back into the 60s .  I'm having a great time if nothing else

On Friday night, I went to a comedy play. On Sat night, I saw a stand-up comic. And then, (to complete a 'hilarity trilogy', if you will) on Sunday I saw pics of what Sam Smith had worn to the Brit Awards the night before.

Gimp suits and chronic flatulence are a terrible combination.

There's people defending it by saying 'Remember some of what David Bowie etc used to wear back in the day?'

Yes, but Bowie pulled it off because he looked like an alien and was one of the coolest and most creative artists ever, whereas Sam Smith did a shite Bond theme and posted a video online on the FIRST DAY of the first Covid lockdown crying about how it was 'soooo hard'.

Hurrah. Seems ages since the last Ben Folds album. Probably my favourite non film or classical artists beyond The Divine Comedy so a new album is always very welcome. Might have to see if I can see him in the U.K.

Have you seen him live before? His live improvs are equally brilliant and hilarious. I keep fondly reposting the YouTube video made of the one concert I caught in Vienna:

His orchestral improvs are at least as stunning, but I guess there's zero chance of ever catching one of those in Europe.

I have seen him as a trio (if not actually Ben Folds Five) but also at (I think) Covent Garden where they did one movement from his piano concerto and other tracks from So There with the group from the album. Both were great, even if it seemed a bit lame to only play one movement from the concerto given that it’s not very long! Agreed his improving is great. Such an amazing pianist. Hope you do get to see him live sometime.

Well I did once, but once is not enough. Although that concert also introduced me to Kate Miller-Heidke (who did the Regina Spektor part in You Don't Know Me for the tour and also opened the concert with a solo set), and I've been a fan of hers since then.
