Never heard him when he was touring with Genesis, Richard. I'm too much a fan of the studio album so I generally avoid live recordings.

Oasis Knebworth 1996. Saw this tonight and it was amazing. Loads of music from both nights obviously but this was all about the fans and their experience. They got a nice sized bunch to reminisce and it’s just crazy how much the world has changed in 25 years. I was too young to even know who oasis were but the doc brought back memories of when I saw them in Slane in 09 and the experiences around that. It’s great being able to buy tickets from my phone while in bed but I kinda miss the comraderie of queuing up outside a shop to get tickets.

August 1993 oasis didn’t have a record deal and had played a handful of pubs. August 1994 they release their debut album. August 95 and their making the evening news because they’re in a chart battle with another band. August 1996 they played the largest free standing gigs in British history. 2.7% of the population applied for tickets. It’s just insane how quick it all blew up.

I hope you got a ticket!

Both nights in Dublin at face value 😃

you don’t post on Live4ever under the same username by any chance?

Fair play, Bilbo. I'd pondered the Croker gigs but after considering the ticket price, return train fare and overnight stay costs (which I'm sure shot up in the wake of the gigs being announced) I thought 'Nah'.

Dublin Hotels are redonkulos at the best of times! They went crazy after the announcement.

not that Belfast is much better. Over €500 for two nights last weekend in what used to be the Jury’s Inn!

Ah congrats - they will be brilliant nights and I must say I've long fancied seeing Oasis in their semi-native homeland!

And yes! Twin musical loves. You?

Ben Folds's email newsletter teases an upcoming orchestral album:

Oh wow. I’d love to go to that. Alas logistically not gonna happen. I have the dvd of him with the West Australia Symphony Orchestra (WASO) which is great fun even if the orchestral playing is a little variable and the sound isn’t ideal. I’m guessing this might be better on both counts! I wonder whether he’s had new arrangements done as I think the WASO ones were done by Aussie composers and arrangers.

High Flying Birds is definitely better than Beady Eye, but there's merit in both.

I didn't like Beady Eye at all. Liam's solo career post Beady Eye has been better but it's not for me.

I've loved everything Noel has put out under the High Flying Birds.

I remembered when I was younger I had a huge crush on Laura Branigan, so I'm now rediscovering some of her songs. This is not a particularly great song of hers but I love the chorus and the video. She was just so enchanting.

What a woman...

I know 'Gloria' and 'Love Is The Battlefield', and that's about it.

I shall investigate, post haste.

Love Is A Battlefield is Pat Benatar, I think.

Besides all the film score expertise, this reveals the suberranean knowledge about pop music in the forum.

Which is completely ok.  You cannot know everything.

I just ask myself, what is more nerdy: Our expertise in film music or our lack of knowledge about pop music? :sarcasm:

Speak for yourself! :D

I have all the knowledge I need, about the pop/rock music I care for.

No offence, @Thor; I love both groups, as well.

Have you got the PYRAMID box, yet?

No, I'm old-school that way. I stick with my old, original CDs. They have a personal story to tell and they sound fine. But for people with endless amounts of money, the APP reissues have looked stunning.

By the way, I nerded out over pop & rock music loooooong before I ever got into film music. It's the original nerd interest.

He's been reissuing and remastering for decades, so at one point I decided just to tune it out. As I said, I'm pleased with my first pressing(?) original CDs acquired in the 90s. But I particularly remember that time in the mid 90s when all those CDs came out with the gold stripe at the top boasting "original master recording", "20-bit remastering" and that kind of stuff. Thankfully, I didn't get caught up in it, because they were enormously expensive.

One of the Edgar Allan Poe remastered CDs suffers from 'The Loudness War'.

As a young kid I thought Agnetha was the pretty one and that hasn't changed to this very day. In fact, I never understood the appeal of the other one. Isn't it funny how our tastes are already formed at a young age?

I have a CD-R that has either this or the Japanese CD on it. Whichever it is, it sounds good, and certainly much better than the remastered one (the one with extra instruments and new digital reverbs).

My. Favourite. Abba. Song. Ever!

As a young and horny teenager, I always thought that Anna Frid was far prettier than Agnetha... and my opinion hasn't changed to this very day :)

As for TOMAIEAP; I've never heard it (literally and figuratively) falling victim to loudness wars.

The stereo version in the box set that came out in 2017 (was it?) sounds pretty good. Of course, it's the '87 remix, and not the original '76 mix.

I clicked on it because the title didn't ring any bells with me. Of course, I immediately recognized it, and it was fun to hear it again after not having heard it for a long, long time. Nice clip, BTW. Love some of the more spontaneous bits in it. It's been playing in my head almost all day now.

Funnily enough, my favourite ABBA song is also city themed and was unreleased during their heyday... this is not an official vid, but I think it's a great song. My contrarian side to find that my favourite song by a band is one that wasn't released on one of their original albums (but demonstrates B&B's songwriting quality remained strong as ever).

Never heard that before, but nice song! More in line with their latter-day sound, and could have fitted into their masterpiece last album THE VISITORS (well, last before VOYAGE).

I suppose a Christmas album has to be released early enough so it can gain traction to become the year's big Christmas hit. But I trust Folds that this is more than a purely commercial affair.

Pink Floyd to reissue entire back catalogue in super deluxe editions with triple embossing.

Wha'?! :o

Is this for real?!

We've had Immersion Editions, and early recording box sets, and Dolby Atmos mixes, and everything in-between.

I know that Gilmour said recently that he'd be glad if the back catalogue was sold, but still...

I’m joking.

but I assume now that Sony own the back catalogue that that’s exactly what they’ll do.
