Jon Anderson provides vocals in the middle eight, actually.

Yeah, but it's a fun anthem. Cute video too, with Williams jr. going all Martin Sheen/Apocalypse Now at one point there.

Joseph had a certain screen presence, yes.

Why was this not a U.S. hit?  One of my favorites, anyway.  Video is too 80s.

It certainly surprises me (I mean, it's Toto), but many U.S. hits aren't hits over here either.

OTOH, it's my least favorite Toto hit. It doesn't hold a candle to Rosanna, Hold The Line, Africa or Human Nature (Michael Jackson). And I bet those were hits in the US.

I've been compiling this list for a few years now. Without further ado, I'm happy to present to everyone my (in-order)

Top 30 Songs of All Time

Sometimes a great song is about a whole fluid construction, while sometimes it's about just that key moment that I call the build-up and reveal. However you use your ears to interpret my top 30, please listen enjoy responsibly. For the record (pun intended), Jay says I have good taste in music, (which IS a true fact!) so hopefully it all translates over to Pop. I'd like to give my final thanks to YouTube for making all these tunes available throughout the years.

Beginning in inverse order:

30. Elvin Bishop - Fooled Around and Fell In Love

29. Aerosmith - I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing

28. The Main Ingredient - Everybody Plays The Fool

27. Orleans - Still The One

26. Deana Carter - Strawberry Wine

(At number 26, a clear example of a "build up and reveal" type of song, ie. 2:13)

25. The Temptations - My Girl

24. Don McLean - American Pie

20. Eagles - Desperado

19. Electric Light Orchestra - Showdown

18. Todd Rundgren - I Saw The Light

17. Fleetwood Mac - You Making Loving Fun

(At number 17, this song has a very clever build-up.)

16. Hall and Oates - Sara Smile

15. A Taste of Honey - Boogie Oogie Oogie

13. Neil Young - Old Man

12. Kansas - Carry On Wayward Son

11. Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven

10. Crosby, Stills and Nash - Judy Blue Eyes (final 3 minutes)

9. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Tuesday's Gone

8. The Jackson 5 - I Want You Back

6. George Strait - Carried Away

5. Eagles - Peaceful Easy Feeling

1. Electric Light Orchestra - Evil Woman

They were.  And they are indeed superior.  My favorites, though, are probably "I won't Hold You Back Now" and "I'll Be Over You."

I was always an 'album' guy; was never that into individual songs. So I've never made any list like that.  But some interesting selections, Borodin. Not a lot of overlap to my own taste, but there are a few.

Agreed with @Thor, to an extent. I could never compile a list of songs from multiple artists. I would never be able to determine a criteria that could separate my favorite Led Zeppelin song from my favorite Bob Dylan song, etc. There’s simply too many and ranking them would feel inaccurate somehow.

Nice to see No Doubt in your list, @Borodin. How did you boil it down that that one particular song?

I love the juxtaposition of Rolie and Perry in this one:

I really like the drum rhythm in the chorus:

The synth near the end of this one is pretty cool:

Then of course this classic:

I love that mellow guitar opening and that high legato vocal section near the end.

My subjectively favorite Toto album.  No song here approaches the level of musicianship on Africa, Rosanna, or even some of the things on Hydra, but, overall, there really isn't an overly weak song on the album.  Very different from Toto's usual jazzy eclecticism.  This is a straight up synth n' shred 80s arena rock record. Frederiksen's vocal style is radically different from Kimball's or Williams's, but it works well here.  He was also very consistent live, but apparently a nightmare to work with in the studio.  So his time with Toto was a one and done.  At any rate, Endless should have been released as the lead single.

That's 'Wings', the band McCartney formed with Linda. Don't know why Lukather and Porcaro are mentioned. Maybe they are guest musicians?

Porcaro is apparently drumming.  Hard to know if it's really him under all that makeup.

That is Lukather definitely on guitar, and he sings a bit also.  I can recognize both the face and the voice.

Apparently, this is from some movie Paul made called "Give My Regards to Broad Street"

Taken for what it is, the song's not bad, but it's not exactly BAND ON THE RUN, is it?

@Alexcremers, Wings ended in 1979, with the release of BACK TO THE EGG.

"That's Wings". It's only the band The Beatles could have been.

@SteveMc  "1/4 of Toto". Er...isn't Toto a five-piece band?

Let's see, well, in 1984 I believe they were a six piece band, so you are definitely closer, yes.

1/3 of Toto, then.

They added a couple more in touring members from time to time.

.someone posted a video of (I think it's called) WAITING FOR YOUR LOVE, but the bassist was one of the Porcaro bros. Had David Hungate gone, by then, because he played on IV.

That was me.  Yeah, Hungate was gone.  He did not dig the amounts of cocaine going around or something, so he moved his family to Nashville just after recording IV.  So, Mike Porcaro appears in all promotional materials for the album.

What's up with the Toto obsession here? I mean, it's a fine band and everything, and I get the Williams connection, but it's not THAT good, is it? (in the hipster circles I sometimes frequent, mention Toto as a favourite band and your chances of getting laid decreases radically).

I'm just going through a Toto phase, I suppose.

Jeff Porcaro and Steve Lukather are true legends.

Overall, the band can be a little hit and miss, but they really captured fire when they hit.

They are by no means a hipster band, though.  Just an artistically worth mainstream outfit.

'As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti' ... that line in Africa never 'flows' too well to me. Like it was crowbarred in at the last minute after someone realised the song didn't mention any African place-names.

That's what I said. They're the opposite.

In recent years, some artists that were considered massively "uncool" in the 90s and early 2000s have now started to gain some credibility among not only hipsters, but music critics as well. Phil Collins being one such example. Alas, Toto has not fared that well.

Been really obsessed with Tash Sultana's Flow State over the past couple months. My favorite album from 2018.

That fucking solo that bursts out 5:30 into "Pink Moon" with a beautiful 40-second build up beforehand...

And my absolutely favorite song. A triple five-star from me for these long lyrical phrases sung in my favorite language by two great voices, with violins in the background...

Yes!  A classic. 80s Italian pop was the soundtrack to my childhood.

It's a great song, from a most underrated album, but, er, what happened to the picture? It's supposed to be orange.

The recent deluxe edition remasters feature the original art on the front and an alternate color scheme art on the back. For some reason that’s the one displayed in the video.

Discussion: which Wurthering Heights recording is tops, Kate Bush's original, or her 1986 re-recording?  Naturally both are capital.
The original is absolutely striking.  The orchestral setting is excellent.  The vocals are otherworldly.  There is definitely something to it.

The '86 version may be a little bit more dated production wise, which is not something I will complain too much about.  But, I think the added polish adds another dimension.  More epic, no doubt, if less gothic.  And Kate's vocals are considerably more accomplished, and add an element of experience, maturity.
