That's a shame, their opinions were not always in harmony with mine, but it was very interesting to watch them discuss the films.

Eh, they're reviews are usually pretty accurate, but they're sell outs. I'd rarely watch their show because it's on at like 1am around here. I think I've maybe seen it 3 times. The last time I saw it they reviewed Domino, gave it 2 thumbs down. I saw the DVD in Best Buy, "Two Thumbs Up!".

if you've seen it 3 times then you don't know what the **** you're talking about. They are not sell outs.

thats not their fault when producers lie. Siskel and Ebert even talked about it on their show once.

thats hardly a reason to call them sell outs.

no, and the Thumbs up is owned by Siskel's late wife and Ebert, it is a trademark.

That does indeed suck, both Ebert and Roeper are some of my favorite critics. Still, the mention of a possible new show is a nice silver lining.

Good, the last populist is gone. The dumb summer movies have lost their most avid champion.

The world make sense again.

This is a good day.

Here's your chance to take center stage and do the movie critique show you've always dreamed of.

what would you call it. Looking Down on the Movie Going Public with Alex Cremmers.

"If you had the intelligence to understand the movie, I might discuss it with you, but since you don't this has been another episode of Looking Down on the Movie Going Public with me, Alex Cremmers!"

Dammit. I just got over Michael Phillips' annoying voice to find that he actually is a pretty decent reviewer. If there's another show of it's ilk, I hope they get more ambitious with their critics. I'd watch A.O. Scott and David Edelstein go at it. Or Jonathan Rosenbaum and anyone.

I think the show, while harmful in it's summing up of a movie in a simple thumbs up or down, was a good way to get one aware of other films, and of film criticism in general. The first reviews I ever read were by Ebert, and only because he was the only critic I had heard of. Through him, I discovered countless movies, and a good bunch of terrific film writers.

They'll still be reviewing movies.

Oh, and have you seen their replacements? Be careful what you wish for....

Simplicity is sometimes better. Thumbs up/down is a simple answer to the question, "Do you recommend this movie?" In that case, its a perfect ratings system. And if you watched the show, the explained if it was an enthusiastic thumbs up or just a marginal one. I used to watch this way before the internets came around, partly to get a sneak preview of movies and also to hear them talk about it. I never liked Roeper and rarely watched it with him on it.

I have to admit I lost interest in the show after Siskel passed away.

Harmful is a bit strong Morlock, you're starting to sound like a certain poster over at FSM. :)

Can't say I go through FSM regularly anymore. Anyway, A.O. Scott wrote a piece about Ebert a couple of months back, and includes a bit of the argument for and against the show (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/13/movies/13scot.html?pagewanted=1).
