Summer 2008

With the summer coming to a close, I thought it was time to reflect on the overall quality of the films and scores of the most competitve time of the year for films.

Overall, 2008 was a good summer for film and scores IMO. I've seen the following films, in ranking from my favorite to least:

1. Indiana Jones 4

2. The Dark Knight

3. The Happening

4. Wall E

5. Mamma Mia!

Scores:

1. Indiana Jones 4

2. The Happening

3. The Dark Knight

4. Wanted

5. Kung Fu Panda

The only other summer film that I know I'll see is The Clone Wars. Other than that, maybe I'll see Mummy 3 or Hancock, but I doubt it.

Well, The Dark Knight was good, of course. Iron Man wasn't bad, but there was something incredibly bland about it (not just the score). I didn't like Wall-E too much, but maybe it's because I was expecting something you simply can't have in a children's film. I'll try to see it again and reevaluate it.

I haven't really been grabbed by any scores this summer. Maybe the closest I came to being "blown away" was hearing the reworked "Raiders March" finale. But that's based on material written twenty-eight years ago, so you can't give Williams too much credit. Wall-E was a nice score.

Ranking of the films I've seen this summer:

1-Ironman

2-KotCS

3-Hulk

4-The Dark Knight

5-Wanted

6-Hellboy 2

7-Wall-E

8-Speed Racer

9-Mummy 3

10-Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D

11-The Happening

12-Prince Caspian

13-Hancock

14-Get Smart

15-Step Brothers

16-X-Files

17-Don't Mess with the Zohan

Scores:

Indiana Jones 4 is first by a large margin

Speed Racer has a great Finale

Hellboy 2 has a decent Elfman score ,especially the cue for the large tree monster.

Wall E is ok .I noticed the music when they take off into space.

TDK and Prince Caspian have atrocious scores that bring down the movies as a whole and actually prevented me from enjoying some scenes

Ironman 's score sucks but doesn't actually hurt the film

At the end of last semester, I used an edited clip from the Iron Man score for a projected power drink television ad for a advertising class final project. It worked spectacularly for that! Guess it doesn't say much about it working for a movie!

Not a great summer for scores, but overall the best summer season this decade.

There are three movies this summer that I can flat-out say that I loved, with no reservations whatsoever: The Dark Knight, WALL*E, and Speed Racer. I didn't love any of the scores, but I like all three, and enjoy listening to them.

There are several other movies I loved, but with some mild reservations: Iron Man, Crystal Skull, and Tropic Thunder. Of those scores, the only one I care about is Crystal Skull, which has definitely grown on me the more I've listened to it. Initially, I found it to be entirely forgettable, but I was dead wrong about that.

Then, the movies that I liked quite a lot, but not enough to rave about: Kung Fu Panda, The Incredible Hulk, and Hellboy II. I enjoyed the scores, but the only one I've bought was Hulk, and that mainly because I felt like supporting the full-score release. My enthusiasm for that is tempered by the CD-R issue.

I enjoyed a few others -- Get Smart, Prince Caspian, Hancock, Pineapple Express, Step Brothers -- but would not say I have any interest in ever seeing them again. I will make an exception if there is a substantial director's cut of Hancock.

I mildly disliked You Don't Mess with the Zohan. I genuinely disliked both Wanted and The X-Files. I'll buy the latter just to keep my collection complete. Same goes for The Happening; I'm a Shyamalan fan, and enjoyed the movie (an admittedly bad movie) well enough for fannish reasons. The Happening had a pretty good score (it's Howard's least-good for a Shyamalan movie, but that's still pretty good). I Want to Believe also had a decent score; I haven't gotten a copy, and probably won't due to not having enough money to buy too many things I'm lukewarm on, but I might invest in a used copy one of these days.

That leaves only Sex and the City (which I had no interest in, but did not despise).

I suppose that if I'm honest with myself, I'd wish there had been more good scores. As is, there wasn't one single great one, only several that are good. And nobody seems to agree on any of those, so the water's even muddier.

Ultimately, though, I'm a lot more concerned with the movies than I am with the scores, and by and large, the movies did not let me down.

I'll take that over great scores and mediocre movies any year.

TDK, Wall-E and Iron Man are my favorites from the summer.

As far as music goes only one of those films had a decent score and that was Wall-E. Speed Racer has an entertaining score as well.

This summer I really like The Dark Knight, Wall-E, Kung Fu Panda and Wanted, in more or less that order. Really, the only movie I didn't like at all (I mean, I thought it was one of the worst movies I'd ever seen) was The Happening.

I liked the scores to Wanted, Indy 4, Kung Fu Panda, The Dark Knight, Hancock (not a clue in what order, certainly not that one). I've yet to hear Wall-E away from the film, but I'm sure I'll find something to like in it, as I'm a huge T. Newman fan.

I should mention that I've avoided a bunch of the big summer films. Speed Racer, Pineapple Express, Hellboy II and Tropic Thunder are the other ones I want to see. Get Smart looks cute, too. I'm not familiar with their scores (though from the clips I've from Tropic Thunder, the score sounds quite fun).

I've avoided most of the movies. The only one that I skipped that people seem to like is Wall-E. (I'm not much into kids fare), so really the summer has had Indy 4 and Dark Knight in my eyes, the latter being the only good score of the year.

I can't wait till next summer, for Gus Van Sandt's shot-for-shot remake of Gus Van Sandt's Psycho. Has it been 10 years already?

The Dark Knight for me crashed the competition but I loved Wall-E. Brilliant!

Both films had average scores but in the case of Wall-e I didn't care.

The dark Knight was such a deep and heavy film it seemed really difficult to imagine it with more full front type of music. It seemed like a rich chocolate cake that would stop you from eating anything else if you know what I mean.

Will watch Hellboy too this week. Can't wait. The first one was awesome

Summer 2008, Your overall impression of the cinema and scores

Two good movies, Wall*E and Dark Knight. The rest was blah, though I haven't see Iron Man yet. From everything I've heard about it, I might like it.

Indy was the only score I bought, it was a dud and nothing else I heard in the theater makes me want to hear any of those scores on their own.

Woops, I definitely did not mean to say that, I mistyped. Dark Knight is not a good score. Indy 4 is the only good score of the year, I meant to say.

Well said, and agreed.

Though I will also add that Speed Racer is my favorite score of the year (most likely anyway).

The most surprising movie for me was Iron Man. I just did not expect it to be nearly as good as it was.
