I was listening to this interview last night actually. The anecdote (starting at around 41-minute mark) about Powell presenting his L3 material/sketches to Williams was hilarious. 😂

Karol

Thank you for pointing that out. I didn’t have time to listen to the whole interview, but I was dying listening to that anecdote. Everyone here should listen to that part if they can.

Another interview:

https://www.polygon.com/2019/2/26/18240326/how-to-train-your-dragon-music-score-soundtrack-john-powell

This one has lots of interesting info which I wasn't aware of before (e.g. didn't know about the viola/tuba thing...)

Also, as a huge fan of Trevor Horn, it's nice to hear Powell speaks so highly of him, and "Slave to the Rhythm" (one of my favourite tracks ever) in particular.

Powell has become my favourite current composer based off my early foray into Bourne, then X-Men 3, then of course How to Train Your Dragon (a trilogy of scores that's up there with Star Wars and LoTR, methinks). Solo is a riot, and now I'm interested in many of his other works... but am put off by cutesy Dreamworks silliness. I have tried Happy Feet 1 & 2, and while it has his flavour, I can't feel its coherence and I don't care for its origins. Any other suggestions?

Flower Festival is where it's at, baby.

And Father and Son. And Bull Olympics. And Highway Chase. And Madrid Finale!

Grandpa's expressed more than once that it's one of the best scores he's heard in a decade, and if my grandpa's praising something, then it MUST be good! Getting his seal of approval ain't easy.

The last two minutes of "Finding Home".... holy moly.  Stunning work from Powell.

So, who has listened to Endurance?

I've just watched Endurance after delving into the score for 3 weeks, a fascinating early one from Powell. Eager to know where it came from, I enjoyed the drama-documentary and the tracking of the music wasn't even that disappointing! As an instant-fan of the score I was disappointed that The Final Race wasn't featured in it's crescendo entirety... does anybody know what music was used instead? Was it the Ethiopian national anthem?

On today's episode, the intrepid John Powell shares his political views on his social media and, like everyone who does just that on 2019, is criticized by the opposing side:

There's not that many film composers who are politically engaged on their social media... right?

Still no avatar image?

I think at this point you should force one on him!  His username is a bit like the name 'Ed Wilson' and here is the first result for a Google Image search of that name.

Make him use this picture if he won't pick one himself!

How many are on social media, period?

A few of they are, specially those from the younger generations: Giacchino, Powell himself, Balfe, Djawadi, and I think David Arnold... Alan Silvestri posts a lot of photos too, but nothing political or controversial, though. Just him writing music, relaxing with his family and friends, traveling to cool places and, sometimes, him on the recording studio of some movie.

James Newton Howard used to be quite active when he was touring with his concert, but a few months ago he literally disappeared. Maybe him posting more on social media was a marketing strategy by the companies backing his concert, not a personal decision from him.

But yeah, most of them don't even have Facebook or, if they do, they don't use it. So yeah, no Thomas Newman ranting about the Trump administration, lol.

Yeah Silvestri’s Instagram is pretty chill. Elfman’s is fun.

Brian Tyler is on Facebook, I think, didn’t @Gruesome Son of a Bitch get a message from him once? Lol

Also Zimmer has that one forum, if he still posts there

Elfman's a fun guy on social media, he posts a lot of weird photos from his past.

Tyler indeed is quite active, he even has an YouTube channel where he posts himself conducting his themes, playing instruments, etc.

I guess the main question is: how many of them uses their pages by themselves, and how many hired some marketing/PR specialists to do it for them? Many public figures do just that, they don't use social media themselves, just hire someone to do it for them.
