The best soundtrack performance

I'll have to say The Phantom Menace. The music is written to be so energetic, and the LSO performs it perfectly. Every trumpet blast, every flute twirl, every drum beat is perfectly placed and articulated. Moments like 0:12 of "The Battle Begins" are played with so much enthusiasm and energy, with the entire orchestra in unision adding to the excitement.

I know that this is not a totally impartial test--sounds quality and the way in which the music was written are sure to have an effect on your decision, whether you want it to or not. But try to only focus on the way the orchestra performs.

I agree, actually. THe sound is perfect, the performance has no flaws that I've noticed. Everyone keeps up and plays in unison, there's power and energy behind it, and the music is great to boot.

Conan The Barbarian has the most appropriate performance that cannot be replicated. Can't think of a particularly brilliant performance otherwise. Shore's The Aviator strikes me as having a unique and terrific sound. The beautiful clarity of the recording is stunning, and he got a really unique sound from the brass, I feel.

Conan The Barbarian is indeed a great performance, especially when the listener considers just how sh*tty the recording actually is. The only reason the ost's sound could never be recreated is because nobody in their right mind would want to recreate it in the first place.

That's my point. It's perfectly unpolished.

Ah, point made

I have given this thought in the past and for JW in terms of collaboration, performance, musical awareness, lack of sour notes, and sheer virtuosity I vote:

1) Jurassic Park (Only two wrong notes do I hear in this score)

2) Phantom Menace

Total Recall is pretty amazing. It's not perfectly flawless, but listening closely, it's amazing even an orchestra like the NPO was able to play it at all. A live performance of that (even not considering the synthesizers) would be quite a feat.

IMHO, here are some of the very best soundrack performances I've ever heard:

- Superman I-IV

- Alien

- Aliens

- For Your Eyes Only

- E.T.

- Jurassic Park

- Star Wars (all of 'em)

- Dances With Wolves

- Total Recall

- Predator

- The Lord of the Rings CRs

- The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

- The Thing (1982)

E.T. all the way. It's not my fave score, but the performance itself is magnificent.

Really? E.T. is one of my favorite scores, a masterpiece, but I don't think the performance is that stunning. There are more than a couple of imperfections. I mean, I guess you could argue that the imperfections make it better, and I wouldn't be one to dispute that. But on a technical level, it is far from perfect.
