Difference in Star Wars (OT) editions

I have the Sony Classical release of all the original Star Wars soundtracks, and just bought The Empire Strikes Back the 1997 RCA Special Edition soundtrack, because I heard that it had excellent liner notes, but that the music was no different. I have flipped through the notes, and they look great, but I wanted to confirm that the music is in absolutely no way different from the 2004 Sony Classical release. If there is any difference whatsoever, I will import it onto my computer as well. That is why I am asking.

Thanks in advance!

Only ROTJ got a major Bass-Boost.. for what reason ever (still the crappy copy of the orig master sound) on the latest release

But on the Musical Journey album "The Light of the Force" has the greatest quality of all the releases, so the original masters are still existing I suppose.

Yes.

I don't think they did any true remastering for those cues.

Sometimes less is more. Take the TPM UE, I'm convinced it sounds so good simply because Murphy probably didn't have a chance to mess with it.

I didn't know that... so it sounds even worse than the RCA?

Yup. I've got the RCA and Sony 2004 sets. ROTJ does sound a bit worse than the RCA. I truly wish these scores would get an actual remastering done to them.

I had the 2004 Version too, but gave it away. The Cues when directly compared DVD Musical Journey / RCA-Sony sound MUCH better.. much clearer nit that harsh, less hiss.. just wounderful stereo.

Well back then I thought The SW 2004 reissues HAVE to sound better, it says on the package they are DSD remastered... ahh sony

That's one of the advantages of JWFan: You don't assume, you let others rush out and buy and review, and then you can decide whether to buy it yourself. In other words: I never got the re-releases.

Sony should have released a true remastered version of the OT scores. I mean if the Musical Journey DVD can have them then surely a legit company like Sony can release them. Lucasfilm proves they do got remastered versions of those scores.

Is that the 1993 Fox Anthology? Four cds? Is that for the three movies? How is that good? Please, explain. ;)

OK, so I guess now my question is, are there officially released albums out there with different musical content from what is on both 2004 Sony Classical and 1997 RCA.

Wasn't the deal that Shawn Murphy just remixed the selected tracks?

Say again? I just linked to pages where you can get high-res scans of the cover art (old and new).

The Anthology has some different takes, Lapti Nek and Ewok Celebration, and considerably better sound at least on ROTJ. So that can be worth having (I would say "is worth having", but the fact is that I rarely play it, and I'm not sure I've ever listened to the whole thing).

I was asking that question to this post.

Nope, if anything go to evilbay and hunt down the RCA and 4-CD Anthology set.

Which editions are we talking about here?

I appreciate the cover art links, though. Some good stuff there.

It's where I get all my collection covers. High resolutions, excellent scan quality and correct rotation. Would take ages to scan everything myself and still look worse in the end.

The RCA are the original 2-CD OT sets. Two versions of that was released, one that had laser photo etched discs and great liner notes and the other in jeweled cases minus the liner notes. The 4-CD Anthology set is what Marian described:

The whole set is definitely worth having. I've made my own edit of ROTJ using mostly the Anthology material where ever I could and it sounds better. For a complete how to edit on how to do this for ROTJ, visit this thread here on the forum: http://jwfan.com/forums/index.php?showtopi...amp;hl=Resource.

The jewel case version still ahs the liner notes.

There was also 2 versions of the jewel case---one had movie posters, others had the black with the gold silver or bronze logos...

Well, the OT selections on the Musical Journey DVD were completely remixed by Shawn Murphy, so I guess we can't really say he's the cause of all the bad things.

He isn't. He was for several years though. His earlier stuff sounds great, his stuff since about POA sounds cool, but between that, he did some of the worst recordings I've ever heard (A.I. taking the crown).

Yes I would certainly lov to have a recording of "Stored Menories" (City under Ice) which hasn't the hisslevel of a Bootleg!

Also Star Wars Episode II has a pretty lame rec. quality too! Can anyone explain to me why? The hiss is awful..

Another trrible thing comes to my mind: The Piano (Jazz-Autographs) on "The Terminal"! you wouldn't guess this man is a professional in sound engineering!

Unlike most here, I'm not too fond of that score anyway. But the sound quality makes it nearly unlistenable to me.

There's been speculation that this comes from the copy protection. I think someone even said the non-protected CDs don't have the hiss? (I might be wrong there)

So there you have it: The copy protection doesn't protect anything for me (I never even noticed it's there), but the hiss is annoying. Another great DRM job by Sony.

My AOTC disc has hiss to it. I wish AOTC and ROTS got an expanded release with the same great mix like The Phantom Menace. At this point I'm willing to take any version for both scores.

I think AotC is the worst Murphy to my ear. That or Call of the Champions. He has had some very good recordings recently though: PoA, RotS, and Indy 4. He's just so inconsistent.
