I've just been listening to Elfman's BR and it's sublime. I'm struck (again) by just how amazing the prologue score is - it is extremely well conceived and about as atmospheric as they come. However, I've always considered FotR to be in possession of the very best prologue score, since it is just so brilliantly evocative of the history of the Ring. But now I'm not so sure which I prefer.

Yes! I've always thought of this as one of the most quintessential Elfman cues. The sleigh bells and trademark wordless choir help create such a dark, wintry feel. It works very well in the film too.

I actually really enjoy both, the BR cue is certainly the best in the film. I narrowly vote for BR, though as a whole Fellowship is easily the better score.

Gotta go for Batman Returns.

Say what you will about the film, the score is phenomenal.

Is that a good score? I have never even seen the film....

Pretty much everyone agrees that it's good, just not how good. Personally I think it's a total masterpiece, one of Williams' absolute best.

It is Williams' best, only rivaled by E.T. I can never decided which I like more.

Superman - The Movie

Neil

There's always one.

You're wrong btw. As brilliant as the short prologue to Superman is, there just isn't enough of it for it to be compared to the lengthy prologues of the two films in the poll. The ratio of quality music in LotR and BR beats Superman.

I have to admit, I'm not familiar at all with Elfman's Batman Returns. Is is a better score than his original Batman (a score which, except for the brilliant and iconic main theme, I've never really gotten into)?

And just to add a dissenting voice, I don't like Superman - The Movie, and I only like half of its score. It's far from Williams' best.

I wouldn't say it's "better" than Batman, but it's more operatic, multi-thematic, and twisted fairy tale like. I'd actually say it's an easier score to get into than the original.

The Batman Returns score has always bored me. And I may have heard FOTR once, I'm hardly in a position to judge these two. However, if I had to choose between them I'd go with......Superman - The Movie.

Unless Neil means to suggest that the first hour of Superman - The Movie itself serves as a prologue -- from Krypton through Smallville, up until Clark's arrival in Metropolis. It's a stretch, as it's closer to Acts 1 and 2 of a movie made of more than three acts, but I rather like the analogy.

Whoa wasn't expecting that from Neil. Who knew he thought so highly of Superman.

I guess as far as prologues go I'd pick Batman Returns.
