Blu-ray News and Deals

I went for this (Upgrade my DVDs of TOS and TOS-R).

From what I've read, this is an absolutely fantastic presentation of the original series, with both original and remastered effects, and both current (7.1) and original broadcast mono versions of the audio.

With the exception of some minor easter eggs, most of the features from the DVDs were carried over too, making this (IMHO of course) the definitive presentation of the show.

I've been collecting the TNG remastered Blu-rays, and those are also stunning.

Here's an even better deal!

All 10 original Star Trek movies in a single box for $47.99 ($4.79 per film)!

Alternatively, you could buy a box set with films 1-6 for $28.49 and a box set with films 7-10 for $18.99, which totals $47.48, saving you 51 cents off the larger box.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002I9Z8GW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1401728000&sr=8-1 (New Gen Cast)

I have both the TOS and TNG cast releases of these Blu-ray sets, and they look good for the most part.

Transfers could have been better in some cases, and TWOK has some strange coloring artefacts for a couple of shots, but otherwise, this is a good set.

I don't see a revamped reissue coming for quite some time, so it might be advisable to leap on this.

Not sure what thread to put this on, but it's about Blu Rays, so...

How come some Blu Ray discs can remember where one stopped watching and took them out of the player? Fox, and Disney Blu Rays are very good at this, but Warner's, Paramount, and Universal are not. Is it a trait of the player, or the disc?

I think I had read it's a trait of the disc!

Also Criterion discs have it.

Hope everybody who wanted this got it. The price jumped back up to $73.50 today

Since I think 2010 or 2011, Fox, Disney and now even Warner have a software that bookmarks where your player last left off. If the player is older than when these discs were introduced, it will need a firmware update.

They sold movies on VHS until 2006. A History of Violence was the last one. But my parents still have two working VCRs and a massive library of store bought tapes and home movies that haven't been rebought or converted.

Would it not more likely be a trait of the player?

A player could remember where you stopped a disc, unless the disc overrides it. Therefore, many do it for DVDs (where the disc had no custom software), but I suppose it can be trickier with Blu-rays, depending on what software they carry. Some definitely have a disc-side bookmark feature that stores the cut off point in the player's internal memory. Some series discs (Lost at least) even have a feature that remembers which episodes of a season you've already watched.

Has anyone seen UNDER FIRE?

under-fire-movie-poster-1983-1020203186.

It has been announced from Twilight Time for an October release (3000 copies with possible an isolated score as all of TT's releases).

I wonder if it would be worth a blind buy!

The first one again? Will I be able to buy the second one separately?

I guess the music video on the first one gives it a good selling point.

What version of the first do you have?

The old transfer with the extras, or the 4K remaster without the extras?

Fortunately I haven't bought any, so I'll definitely buy this digibook!

A steelbook would be great too!

on an off topic note:

I see you're Australian! I had a wonderful experience with an Australian fellow some days ago.

I had spotted an extremely rare OOP Australian Bluray at ebay, and he was kind enough to buy it for me and send it to Greece (since they didn't ship outside of Australia), although he was among the ones that was searching for it too!

Really great guy!

I saw it when it was released. Don't remember a thing about it except that at the time it felt like just another movie to me. But hey, if you like political movies, this one gets good reviews, so by all means, buy it.

I have the old version with the extras. It's actually a decent transfer that sparked some controversy because suddenly a lot of home media buyers were shocked that film is made up of a grain structure. The transfer was approved by Lazlo Kovacs, so that was good enough for me.

Nice story about a fellow ocka!

I have. Why?

It is well worth it, if only for the iso score (and John Alcott's photography, and Ed. Harris, and, of course, Joanna Cassidy!!!).

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Moulin Rouge

My Cousin Vinny

Office Space

The Princess Bride

Predators

Prometheus

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Skyfall

Total Recall (original film, 2012 remaster)

And some multi-film collections on discount:

Batman / Returns / Forever / and Robin for $12.96 ($3.24 per movie)

Lethal Weapon 1-4 for $12.96 ($3.24 per movie)

Right, because someone wanting to own a movie and not waiting years for it to discount that low is so unfathomable to comprehend. Completely beyond the realm of human imagination.

Since I'm pretty money conscious, I don't typically rush out to get a lot of DVDs/Blu-rays when they first come out, unless I absolutely need the thing. I wait to buy bulk when the price is right.

Anybody partaking in any of those deals?

I'm probably going to get the Lethal Weapons... I haven't seen them in over 20 years and I've been wanting to see them again... And you can't beat that price

I was gonna buy that, but realized it was one of those 4-film collections and not a legit box set

What's the problem with that?

Like I said I think they're outdated transfers. Aren't all 4 movies on one blu-ray disc with those? Nothing wrong if you just want to revisit some old action classics, but the perfectionist in me would want the box set from 2007.

The BR box set of remasters came out in 2012, not 2007, and this 4 film fan favorite collection is from 2013.

HOWEVER! You are right in that initial pressings accidentally had the old transfers of 1 and 2. They were quickly pulled and replaced with a new version that had the new version of 2, but still the old version of 1 :( Plus, this set doesn't have the 5th disc of bonus features.

I'll probably buy Godzilla at full price when it's released. And whatever limited edition gimmicks they release alongside.

Me too. A cool Godzilla statuette, or something along those lines, will trigger an immediate pre-order.

They gave Ghostbusters II no attention. They took a featurette that probably focuses almost entirely on Ghostbusters and split it in half to give the second film some type of extra. No other effort given to provide decent supplemental material. I think people hate on that film a bit unfairly.
