The human eye can't tell the difference between HD and 4K unless the TV is 65" or bigger from standard viewing distance.

Yeah, but......4K

Of course the difference can be seen when the image is blown up, on a monitor right in front of your face.

Hence why I said "at standard viewing distance"

On my 46" TV 720p and 1080p look great.  Maybe if we get a 65" for the new house, I'd consider getting a 4K instead of 1080p if the price isn't drastically different.

Sadly there will never be a 4K plasma, right?

Never to be available commercially, but I recall Panasonic created a concept model that was displayed at some tech expo a few years ago.

However, like Plasma, every OLED pixel is its own light source.

Rich person cheap or real world cheap?

Slickdeals has 65" 4Ks for $800 all the time now.

I wonder how a film like ID4 will stand up to scrutiny in 4K. It was made in that awkward phase where CGI wasn't as hi-res as it is today, so those CGI elements in the film will likely look upscaled. Weren't CG effects rendered in 2K back then? The practical effects work will be fine though.

Better! Look at Jurassic Park! The sharpness is outdated but the softness tends to work as some kind of masking.

(not that I want to see ID4 ever again, mind you)

4K is not recognized by your eye except in situations where you are too damned close.

Does opening your other eye help?

Sitting very close does otherwise no.

Sitting close in relation to the screen size.

I can't exactly count the pixels in the end credits text on a Blu-ray, but I can see that it's still slightly pixelated. I haven't yet seen 4K myself, but I'm sure it's warranted for a decent home theatre setup.

Its a great film!

No. "Birth Of A Nation" is a great film". "Lawrence Of Arabia" is a great film. "The Seven Samurai" is a great film. "The Searchers" is a great film.

"ID4" is a piece of trashy, LCD "entertainment"...but it's fun to watch.

What  lovely film, although I would have preferred to see Richard Amsel's gorgeous original artwork. Still,  I'll watch any film with William Devane, and I'll certainly watch any film with Julie Christie. "Shampoo", anyone?

I'm so happy that Criterion is putting out a proper release for McCabe & Mrs. Miller.  It's for sure my favorite Robert Altman movie.

Maybe this isn't the thread for it but I think this would be my Top 5 Robert Altman ranking:

1. McCabe & Mrs. Miller

2. Short Cuts

3. Nashville

4. The Long Goodbye

5. Gosford Park

No love for "M*A*S*H", "Images", "The Player", "Popeye", "Pret-a-Porter", or "The Gingerbread Man", Stu?

I never said that it is a good movie. I only said that I enjoy watching Julie Christie, in it.

The DVD is long out of print. Hopefully Criterion or Twilight Time or somebody can release it on Blu-ray someday.

MASH I appreciate for jumpstarting Altman's career as a major director but think it hasn't aged well at all.

The Player I love a lot, it just wouldn't be among my 5 favorites.

Popeye I'd categorize more as an interesting failure than an actual good movie.

Images I still haven't seen and really need to!

The other 2 were pretty unremarkable to me.

I can complete my 70's disaster films collection when Airport 1975 comes out on June 14.

I don't care for 77 or 79 but since they are part of the collection I can deal with it.
