It was overlong in places but I enjoyed it. I think Ritchie has talent, but went through a disaster streak.

I ordered my first blu-ray, Planet Earth for the decent price of £18. After my huge unwatched DVD collection, I'm determined to only buy stuff that I either constantly rewatch or has HD demo qualities.

Despite the overcompression?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, some of the things that have been said about this set are on the verge of ridiculous hyperbole. FOTR doesn't look stunning, but then it never did. It's always suffered the most since the day it was in the theater from obvious digital manipulation (hello softness!), and because of the lack of post time and money, it was clearly not treated as lovingly or thoroughly as TTT or ROTK (which look amazing).

Honestly, people have been complaining about this set from the day it was announced because it doesn't have the extended versions (which are not my preferred cuts). I think the thing is, and I've mentioned this before, that people expect absolute perfect from BD, and when they don't get it they blame everything on DNR and the studios without thinking about what was actually done to the film itself, something which suddenly comes under extreme scrutiny when you can pause, rewind and take screencaps in HD.

But then it is the internet. The first instinct is always to treat every thing that they don't like as a human rights violation (see Star Wars).

Fellowship always looked nice on DVD to me. I expect (or hope that) every movie on BR looks as good as a Pixar movie (unfairly I know), so I'm always a bit disappointed when they don't. Charlie's description is enough to put me off the initial LotR release, and besides - I'm waiting/hoping for a later 'complete' release which allows viewers to select their own version of the trilogy, the ability to hand pick extended scenes, dropping them into a cut of choice - it'll never happen, but it could in theory :)

I no longer regard the Extended Editions as definitive, there are quite a few added scenes which are counterproductive, in my opinion.

As for Avatar, I'll pick it up next year, when it's cheap. I've seen it too many times already.

There are a few, most of them in ROTJ, but as a whole I still find all three EEs clearly superiour to the theatrical cuts. FOTR and ROTK both get crucial bits that were missing in the shorter versions, and as for TTT, the film version of the Faramir character never really worked in the crippled theatrical cut.

I liked how 99% of the reviews on Amazon gave the Blu set 1 star and bashed it for not having the extended cuts, yet it was the #1 Blu sold. I don't understand how people could hate it so much, I mean, it's the version they saw in theaters and fell in love with first. And it's not like they released the EE's with the TC's on DVD.

I can completely understand the hate tbh. The die-hards would be instantly neutralised if the EE's were released simultaneously, but that was never going to happen with a money making release like this. The distributors know that many of the moaners will cave, and part with the cash... twice.

Actually, for a lot of people the EE's on Blu will mark the 4th purchase of the trilogy, not including the 5th for the eventual 3D release, and even 6th - if they do them theatrically first.

Yes, I can perfectly understand the hate. Koray lad, you need to move out and start paying bills, maybe then you might understand their frustration too. Though lord knows how many times you've been told that.

My only thought is that maybe he wants to perfect the EEs. He's already said (I think in the FOTR commentary) that he wants to go back and redo the Gollum in that film, so maybe he wants to spruce things up, and I doubt he has the time to commit to it right now with The Hobbit.

The theatrical versions are my preferred versions, and the EE of TTT is the only one that I'd call essential, and even that needs trimming down. But I agree that a kind of middle ground would be nice. Someone did mention somewhere that it'd be a cool special feature to be able to make your own EEs, and it would be, and it'd be pretty easy with seamless branching.

Stop pulling that shit on me. What did I say that has anything to do with that? If you don't want to spend money on the TC's, then don't, and wait for the EE's which inevitably will come out. But don't go around essentially creating chain letters to bash the product. The most liked review on the Blu page is a dude who says anyone who gives it more than 1 star is a studio executive trying to sell the product.

Nope. Anyone who pays for porn is a mug. Mind you, I might pay to see Keri Sable's butt, or Mandi Dee's boobs in 3D.

*Drax goes off to google Keri Sable and Mandi Dee*

Any of you ever bought any porn on Blu-Ray?

Is porn already available on BR?! :P

Really that's how BD beat HD-DVD. Whatever format porn chooses is destined to be the winner. :P

Bill Hunt @ Digital Bit hopes that James Cameron will split Avatar over two disks for the special edition as he feels there really isn't enough room on one.

I hate when movies are split over multiple discs, tapes, Laserdiscs, VCDs, whatever.

I'm sure most of us here hate it as well. However, sometimes if there is absolutely no room on a disc then it has to be done.

A single blu-ray disc MAYBE be able to hold all of the Extended Edition of Avatar. If they have the first disc with just the movie on it and then another disc for bonus content, then I am all for that.

Interesting. So the good news is, there may indeed be a Ultimate Box Set thingy down the road with tons of extras we've never seen. And the bad news is, there are no concrete plans for releasing the EEs, so it could be years until they come out.

So I don't really give a crap about Avatar, but apparently the Batman individual BD's dropped as well? Best Buy had them 19.99 a piece, but I thought they were coming out in a couple of weeks. I seem to recall Target would be having a buy 2 get $10 off sale so I held off.

A Blu-ray disc can EASILY hold all of Avatar.

Apparently it can hold it but not easily and not for the best viewing possible.

It would be best if they split it.

If a single Blu-ray disc can hold a theatrical version and directors cut of any movie, it can easily hold Avatar. Take American Gangster for example, one version is like 2.5 hrs, the other close to 3, Avatar ain't 5 hours long.

Length isn't the only issue. Get a clue.

I trust Bill Hunt at Digital Bits more than you when it comes to Blu Ray
