Indiana Jones: The Soundtracks Collection (official Thread)

This paragraph from the post he linked to really pisses me off:

"One thing I learned about John Williams when I first had the chance to work with him on previous CD reissues, was how he 'orchestrated' a very specific musical experience for his listeners. There was a science and musical logic to how the cues were to be organized, merged together and divided. The CDs didn't need to include everything and every note featured in the films. For this new Indy soundtrack release, some of the cues are as John had originally mixed them for the first album issues; other cues were dropped simply because they didn't fit the musical journey envisioned for these new CDs...."

While JW's compositional skills are a given, his 'musical logic' quite frankly sucks imo.

And how about 'other cues were dropped because' they didnt want to pay another 15 mins of reuse fees. That may sound overly cynical, but I really think this set should have avoided Williams' way of thinking.

Well,he did select most of the right cues, but if that's the excuse for not releasing all of them even on disk 5...Right now if sound quality is good the set rates a 95%

I'm a bit bummed there's no Fortune and Glory.

Well it makes sense now that Williams was once again involved orinfluenced the assembly of this set. When I saw Bouzereau's name attached I had a feeling Williams would somehow affect this release.

Hopefully if there is a chance down the line for complete versions, much like the Star Wars 2 disc sets, Williams won't be involved and Nick Redman or Michael Matessino can do them.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm pretty happy with this release. I'm just disappointed by Laurent's editing influences, and the Desert Chase edit seems even more stupid as he claims he's trying to represent Williams' original intentions.

Reminds me of the totally pointless microedit in Anakin's Dark Deeds - why John, why???

Oh I'm happy as well because it looks like the bulk of all the scores will be present. But I agree at some of the odd editing choices.

Please. :P

Really, Williams should release complete scores with a bonus CD on how he envisions a perfect listening experience.

Its mean to say to, but if he (Williams) really thinks that 40 mins CDs can please the soundtrack buyers (let's be serious, the collector wants filled CDs and the casual buyer does not mind the length, but i'm sure that the more they get the more happy they are) he is a little misguided.

After all he is choosing (poorly) what we hear, and he says he rever relistens for his scores so his listening experience is not experienced by him.

That's said, he's the greats film composer out there :(

PD: but it is scary that Laurent makes this release sound as the definite release... and well the 5th disc could have been filled with all and every cues remaining. giving us all the music (including the cut parts from desert chase and etc) + williams sequencing and edits

Ow bummer, no Fortune and Glory or the alternate cue with the Stones theme... I had always assumed that at least one of those two would be on there. Oh, well.

(Anyone interested in the original file from the Filmharmonic II CD can pm me, though I very much recommend buying the whole CD, it's a very nice compilation.)

Is it not also included on the Williams compilation?

I've been wanting it, but no American merchants carry it.

He'll probably be dead by then, and then people will have the freedom to do what they want. We could even get a Sugarland Express score!

OK, I'll just come right out and say it: that blurb from the CD is the biggest crock ever. Yes, I'm very grateful for the music that will be on the set and I will enjoy it immensely, but apparently all this so-called producer could do is write an apologetic for why the release is a mess, insert a self-aggrandizing quote into the press release, and cut some of his tired DVD interviews together so that we can all have a chance to practice how to delete a track from an iTunes playlist.

A good producer would have made the case to the artists (if they had to be involved at all) that the current market for soundtracks calls for a specific (and really very simple) approach to the presentation. Williams should have been made to realize that there was an opportunity here to preserve his work for posterity and that the music was good enough and important enough to speak for itself and stand on its own without unnecessary tinkering and editing. Instead he was given the opportunity to vainly and recklessly screw around with music that he wouldn't be able to write today.

There is no excuse for these things not being done right. It's not like there aren't other releases to point to as a template. An opportunity was completely missed here, and I don't think it will come again, I'm sorry to say, until the composer is dead and the people who have ridden his coattails for years no longer have a reason to care.

One thing that makes me sad is, that they of course must have remastered ALL the music on the masters.. and I am convinced that they created Complete Soundtrack CDs for themselves and for the Lucasfilm/-arts archive. They are there in slumber while we get "only" an official release with a special selection..

why these CDs aren't pumped up to 78 minutes each (especially disc 5!!) is a mystery to me. I am still happy with what I will get, but like gambling in the casino.. you win and win and win.. then youlose once, you stop playing and you are content with your win.. but you always keep thinking: "Damn I could have got more!!"

pity that laurent left of some great underscore from TOd and TLC I don't care that much for Fortune and Glory but I do for True Believer and the scene when the child arrives at the village and falls into Indy's arms.

Starving Village - DVD Rip (Clean!)

Plea for help - Indy and the Villagers

They stole the children - Indy LEGO (Alternate)

Fortune and Glory - DVD Rip (Ruined by constant sfx!)

While I prefer they do it right the first time I think some of you are being a little too harsh. There still is a wealth of music on this set.

Since we're getting a great wealth of unreleased material from all three original films, I'll not complain a bit and I remain convinced that we're so damn lucky to see such a thing finally released for all of our listening pleasure.

That being said, that remark by Bouzereau sounds a bit like an excuse for not releasing all the stuff. I very much understand the choice to respect the creating artist and involve him into these kind of things, but maybe they could have tried a bit more to convince Williams to preserve ALL of his amazing music for the Indy films, since it's part of the history of both film and film music.

You know, we're getting very much into personal preferences right here (i.e. separate cues vs. joined longer tracks; original album presentation vs. chronological film presentation etc.), so it's very hard to determine what is right and what is wrong. In the end, we should be glad the great majority of the music is finally available.

This may reek of desperation, but is it possible that Jeff is mistaken and only mistook the End Credits from ToD for the album version because they both begin with the Raiders march? Maybe he assumed they were the same?

Grasping for straws? <_<

The track time is the same as the original album so no.

But five seconds shorter.

Which would account for the previously unreleased 27 seconds of "end credits" versus the 32 seconds of "return to the village" from the original album.

I can't imagine they'd have the SAME section from "Return to The Village" TWICE on the same set...

Totally switching gears, I just realized something: in the passage before the choral Slave Children's Crusade theme in "Cliff Confrontation" (the one with the brass hits after Willie and Shorty kick Mola Ram back down the bridge), the percussion in the background is a faster version of the bridge percussion music. I first thought of it when I noticed that same interesting low, swirling drum sound in both passages. Interesting. And it gives even more relevance to the bridge percussion music beyond the fact that it's awesome, KM. <_<

Well, I am now going to attempt to find and obtain a reasonably priced copy of the DCC "Raiders of the Lost Ark" album on EBay.com. Anyone care to challenge me in a bidding duel?

A few for $28 + shipping @ http://www.amazon.com/Raiders-Lost-Ark-198...m/dp/B0000001AE

Uh... I appreciate the offer, but I found two well-priced (for now) copies on EBay.com.

Ah, yeah. I see 'em. Good luck!

I was happy to get one off half.com for 25 bucks after initially selling one for ~$35-$40. Can't believe they botched Desert Chase =/ Oh well, it's good to have the informative liner notes again anyway. <_<

This is what happens when you let Williams be involved in the production process. I'm sorry, but he has no sense of good CD presentation. Still, I'll wait until I actually have my copy to criticize.

I actually agree.. I wonder too if he decides where all the edits should take place...

I want to know who to blame for the ending of "It Can't Be" on the OST for Revenge Of The Sith.

Yeah I got mine off eBay for $25 as well. Only problem, it's the crappy Silva Screens version. It looks like a homemade copy. No liner notes, just photo paper print out for the insert. Poorly attached paper label on the CD.

that's a good question .I think he takes care of the general cue layout ,but that some secondary editors might be responsible for some microedits like in It Can't Be

I bet he pulled his remaining hair out in frustration when he found out that Lukas Kendall included the complete "Desert Chase" on the DCC. This is his way of "correcting" that "mistake".
