From the trailer, it looks so knowing and snide, as if it knows it has no value whatsoever, so it goes all-out to alienate you. It's a huge "F**k you!" to the audience.

I don't mind swearing in a film, but I don't want to hear it in a trailer, or especially see it written on a poster. I feel that some sort of Rubicon has been crossed, and I don't like it.

Poor Elio sure looks like the "weird" one of the bunch  Seems like original animated movies will continue being the exception rather than the norm, which isn't surprising. Coco was the last fully original to earn over $500 million at the global box office. Elementals nearly got there, but only after overcoming a horrible opening weekend and being pretty much the only option for families with young kids amidst a lot of adult competition (Indiana Jones 5, M: I 7, Oppenheimer, etc).

 

It's sad to see that there may not be room for new, bold ideas in animation like before, when we had Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Incredibles, Ratatouille, WALL-E...

Endless sequels to things I've never seen. I don't even know what the hell that is between Snow White and Mufasa but it looks like a weirdly stylized 3? A third entry of something I don't know and I've never seen.

 

Seeing Avatar there confused me for a second because I momentarily forgot that they absorbed Fox, one of the worst business deals ever.

 

As someone who was primarily only interested in Disney's theme parks, IPs are also the only things they add to those places anymore. There are no longer original attractions like The Haunted Mansion or Pirates of the Caribbean. It has to be Pixar or Marvel or some princess cartoon movie. This is a company in decline!

Those are all Pixar films.

 

According to this list, the only original Disney films before the Disney Renaissance were Fantasia (to an extent) Saludos Amigos, The Three Caballeros (the two most obscure ones from the entire list, I suppose - or at least the two I've never seen), and The Aristocats (and that was already 33 years after the first film).

 

And then after the Renaissance we have Lion King (arguably, because Hamlet is strong in it) and then, starting with 2000's Dinosaur, some 15 original stories in just 24 years.

 

Of the last ten films (since 2011), three have been sequels (with original stories, I suppose), and the other seven have had original stories. Clearly, Disney films have never been as original (not even close!) as during the past decade.

 

And if you want to pit sequels against film versions of existing stories (like all those classic fairy tale Disneys), I suppose at least technically the sequels are the more original ones.

If they had made TRON 3 after LEGACY, as planned, it would have been brilliant, as it was due to star Bridges, Boxleitner, Warner, Wilde, Hedlund, Murphy, and Morgan, with Daft Punk scoring.

It's Tron, so it's a given; I'll watch it. Whether I'll like it remains to be seen.

I'm not the world's greatest Leto fan, but you never know.

Atticus and Ross seem like a decent successor to DP, and it will look good, at least.

I think that depends on the definition of originality. If you are considering "original" as a "story you've never seen elsewhere" then yeah, most of the Disney classics being based on fairy tales, literature classics and folk legends aren't original. 

 

But I think there's a huge difference between a Disney version of a classic tale and a sequel created to capitalize on that adaptation's success. Which is why "original" may not be the best word. Scott Mendelson uses "new-to-you" which I think it's better ("you" meaning the general moviegoing public).

 

In other words, before the Disney movies were released people had heard of Beauty and the Beast, the tales of the 1001 nights, the myth of Mulan and Edgar Rice Burrough's Tarzan, but their specific versions made by Disney were new. 

 

Now, instead of looking for other literature classics, myths, etc. to inspire new adaptations or even original ideas (Lilo & Stitch, Wreck-It Ralph, etc), Disney would rather do sequels to their own movies that people already know and love because it's theoretically an easier bet. 

 

Paraphrasing Mendelson again, people would rather watch a proper Frozen sequel than "the new Frozen" i.e. another adaptation of a classic fairytale that Disney haven't done yet and could become either the new Frozen or "just" the new The Princess and the Frog.

 

It is risky to bet in "new" ideas and it has always been. Sometimes you end up with flops. And it's not like Disney didn't try something new before: Atlantis, John Carter, Chicken Little... I guess in the minds of the executives, those movies flopping were such a traumatic event that these days they're only doing movies with established IPs (and I mean that as in "Frozen is a famed IP that Disney would love to explore while other Hans Christian Andersen fables that weren't touched by then are not").

Eventually they're just going to start remaking Pixar movies in to these types of live action movies, which look more animated frankly than live action. There will be like a Small Soldiers style remake of Toy Story.

I thought the movie looked pretty good and I think making Michaels the main character was an interesting choice. Good luck to the poor buggers playing the SNL legends.

 

But I certainly agree about the poster. I'm sure there are people who would try and tell me that I'm old and it's just a word. Then I could find the words that not only would not be on a poster but people can lose their jobs for using.

Well, I was 8 when The Rescuers came out and I was there on opening night for The Rescuers Down Under when I was 21.

 

I have no need of a Frozen 3 but I think the songs for Frozen 2 are wildly underrated.

Sigh. This is the DC studios logo they'll be using.

 

It's kinda bad. It's the logo DC used from the mid 70s until the mid 2000s (aka the logo used in James Gunn's formative years) followed by "Studios" in a similar way Marvel Studios writes their own logo, with one bar above and one below the word.
