Your own Indy scores

Personal taste, I guess.

I've done the same (At least with 'Indy Negotiates'/'The Nightclub Brawl' and 'Fortune and Glory/The Trek'.) I don't really like a lot of music combined together unless it absolutely sounds wrong uncombined (like with Underground Chaos). Then again, I'm sure other people would think the opposite way.

I've also rarely combined DVD-rip material with OST material, especially something like F&G which still has slight FX. Just disrupts the listening experience for me, which is why F&G is on my bonus disc.

Actual comments on my work! COOOL!

Thanks, Jason and Charlie!

What I do for my extended editions is to give all tracks with proper sound quality John Williams as Composer and all tracks that have questionable quality no composer.

That way, on my iPod, when I select "Composer>John Williams", I can listen to just the good-quality tracks and when I select "Album>Temple of Doom", I can listen to it all.

Why would you ever want to listen to Indy Negotiates without it directly segueing into the nightclub brawl?
Never. But I might want to listen to the nightclub brawl without having to listen to Indy Negotiates. ROTFLMAO

I might merge them together at a later point though; not entirely sure yet.

What I did do was to make the ending of "Indy Negotiates" very short, so the tracks almost go together when listened to in order.

09 - Fortune and Glory - 2:16

3m2a+3m2 DVD Rip from the Editing Package

10 - The Trek - 2:26

"Short Round's Theme" from the Concord ToD Disc

Why wouldn't you combine these 2 together?
For the same reason as Charlie Brigden: the sound quality and sound effects difference.

I'm still trying to decide what to do with all the village tracks though; I don't like having so many short(ish) ones.

Problem is that some contain slight SFX and have different sound quality.

What I did do was to make the ending of "Fortune and Glory" very short, so the tracks almost go together when listened to in order.

19 - Saving Willie - 4:45

Contains "Short Round Escapes" and continues with the first half of "Saving Willie"

Why would you break Saving Willie in half?
"Saving Willie" needs to segue into "Slave Children's Crusade", which should segue into "Short Round Helps".

However, the track becomes really quite long then, so I tried to find a good place to seperate it into two and the best place I could find was halfway into "Saving Willie".

Now "Underground Chaos" actually starts at the same point where the old low-SFX bootleg used to start.

I'm amazed at how many DVD-rips and microedits some people are making to this set. But that's just me. I fiddled with KotCS a lot, but that's only because of how much of a presentational mess I consider it to be, and the amount of good music left off. I guess I just have to be truly passionate about a score to go to such lengths.

BTW, there are 3 re-recordings mentioned above with 'unknown source' by them. The Mine Car Chase and Finale/End Credits are from the 40 Years compilation and Parade of the Slave Children is from Greatest Hits.

Bah, I think I'm gonna go back and redo my 17-minute-long "Shanghai, 1935 - To India" track. Some of the transitions are just not satisfactory. And...well, who am I kidding? I'm a music editing addict. =P

On another note, I'm curious if anyone else feels an occasional need to rectify edits in a more..."musical" way that what's heard in the film. A good example is the film transition between "The Old Priest" and the alternate beginning of "The Child Returns." In the film, the final low D of the former hits on beat 1, and then beat 1 of the latter comes in just a little bit later. I like the way that sounds, in a way, but it makes a lot more musical sense to make the two first beats line up exactly, which is what I've done in my edit. Similarly, I got rid of the split-second gap between "The Child Returns" and "The Elephant Trek." What do y'all think?

On another note, I'm curious if anyone else feels an occasional need to rectify edits in a more..."musical" way that what's heard in the film.

For my own versions, I often try to make the film edits more "musically pleasing".

On my "On The Tank" edit - I added the Nazi Fanfare, but it comes in right after the first (unused) dramatic punctuation and segues into the next section (Where the Nazis jump onto the tank) much cleaner than in the film. I would take no pleasure in a sloppy edit - just for the sake of being true to the film.

I also sometimes, though not always, arrange Alternates into the actual score. I have the unused "Indy rides the statues" sequenced right before the original "through the wall" (from the leaked Raiders). Redundant, but it sounds fine to me. I also kept the original dramatic stinger at the end of "father and son reunited" (6m2 - Discussing The Book). The next track - "Elsa's Betrayal" - begins with the "Don't Call Me Junior!" insert. Story-wise it is repetitive, but it makes a nice (complete) listening experience for me.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

[Note: Unchanged from previously, just some tracks renamed]

For now I have merged king mark's expanded tracks with my original re-ordered soundtrack.

I have yet to listen to crumbs' expanded edition and bonus disc to decide what to add from those.

The placement of the concert suites between "Spalko's Dossier" and "A Whirl Through Academe" is because I want to keep the suites in that order and

want to have "Legend of the Crystal Skull" before "A Whirl Through Academe" and "Agent Irina Spalko" after "Spalko's Dossier".

The first because it can take the place of the diner conversation and the second because I don't want to have the fully developed theme play too early.

I might re-order all this later, especially after inclusion of crumbs' work.

Bah, I think I'm gonna go back and redo my 17-minute-long "Shanghai, 1935 - To India" track. Some of the transitions are just not satisfactory. And...well, who am I kidding? I'm a music editing addict. =P

I'm the same way!

I'll work on something for hours one night, and be happy with it. Then a week later I'll listen to it again and be dissatisfied with it.

Like I thought I had made a good Out Of Fuel -> Slalom edit, but I listened to it last night and didn't like it.

My Negotiates -> Brawl edit is perfect, though. I think it only took me one or two attempts and it's always sounded great

Like I thought I had made a good Out Of Fuel -> Slalom edit, but I listened to it last night and didn't like it.

I know what you mean. It's a tough edit, to be sure, especially because there's that weird extra note in the horns. Sounds like they edited it and screwed things up somehow...the score doesn't indicate a grace note there or anything. So I originally just left it in and did a regular old transition between the cues, but that wasn't quite right...so I tried again, cutting out that very brief wrong note and adding a hint of artificial reverb to make it sound more natural, and then I started Slalom, and it seemed fine...but then I listened to it again yesterday and realized it was not satisfactory.

My Negotiates -> Brawl edit is perfect, though. I think it only took me one or two attempts and it's always sounded great

I'm pretty satisfied with my current one. It didn't sound bad before, but I realized that it sounds more like an actual performance if you use the envelope tool to quiet down that crescendo at the end of Indy Negotiates. I think they intentionally increased the volume of the end of the track for the Concord release to give it a more decisive ending, which is fine, but it just sounds weird in the edit. So I made a longer, less drastic crescendo with a quieter last note last night, and it still sounds good to me this morning.

The transition into Through Chinatown can be tricky, too, for some reason. I think I've finally got the beats perfectly synced up, though.

EDIT: Okay, now I'm getting anal. You know the string passage in Through Chinatown I pointed out? I used the rear DVD channels, as I said, and I'm now noticing that the strings sound very...central, in terms of panning. But they sound a little to the left in the OST. So I used Audacity to pan the DVD audio 30% to the left, and it sounds much better. :D Also, I think I'm going to split up my "Shanghai, 1935 - To India" track into two. It's just so long...the end of Through Chinatown really feels like a track ending, and the the beginning of Out of Fuel really does feel like a new track beginning, and there's only four bars of barely audible overlap in the film, so...yeah. I think I'll split 'em up.

EDIT 2: I cheated.

I was dissatisfied with my abrupt, rather noticeable transition into the Map Extension, and I got an idea. The Raiders March ostinato at the beginning of the extension is, for all intents and purposes, identical to the original except for its tempo. So...I increased the tempo of the original version so it matched the extension, and cross-faded between them. MUCH more natural.

Now I'm back to that bothersome transition into Slalom. I'm considering just cutting out the horns altogether, creating reverb to fake a clean ending without the horns, and then adding the beginning of Slalom. Or maybe not. If anyone has had success creating a REALLY perfect edit between the two cues, I'd be very curious to hear an explanation of how you did it.

EDIT 3: The KISS principle strikes again. I think I'm going to keep it simple and not bother trying to get rid of the weird (concert) A in the horns. Musically, it sounds okayish with it left in there, and the edit feels a lot more natural without messing everything up.

EDIT 4: I officially hate how you can't post twice in a row. This post is getting huge because no one else is posting. [EDIT 1/5: And of course, when I comment on it, it lets me do a new post.]

Anyway, I just felt like sharing that the transition to the DVD-ripped clean ending of "X Marks the Spot" sounds better if you pan it 20% to the left.

Perhaps it's because your Slalom pitch correction is wrong.

You also need to listen carefully to the trumpets in the last section of Out of Fuel, which should be the same note/tone as the trumpet opening of Slalom.

26 - The Rope Bridge (Alternate)+ - 2:12

From the Editing Package - source: LEGO Game

There is no such thing as an alternate rope bridge: all the versions in the Lego files are just the opening of the Rope Bridge cue looped again and again.

Ah! So I could just remove the alternate altogether, right? I love having as few alternates as possible, except those that are really different.

I'm wondering if I can also remove the "instrumental" Anything Goes. That is not an actual alternate, is it? Just a rear-speaker rip?

Personally I don't really like having too many alternates, unless they REALLY add something.

Therefore I'm definitly keeping "They Stole the Children (Alternate)".

35. Raiders March Fanfare (Unused) [bootlegged] [0:15]

36. Nazi Fanfare [for "On the Tank", from DVD] [0:11]

Total time: 1:52:05

The organization is kinda sloppy in that I just have a bunch of short bonus tracks tacked on in chronological order after the main score, but I'm not losing any sleep over it. Also, I've sent Jason a PM explaining which bootlegged files are the best, in my opinion, so hopefully there'll be a new editing package soon.

6. Beneath the Floors [bootlegged] [2:38]

7. Ah, Rats! [3:40]

These 2 sound good combined.

11. Discussing the Book [bootlegged, with alternate ending from DVD] [2:07]

Alternate ending from DVD? We have the ending in bootleg form...

These 2 sound good combined.

I definitely considered it and tried it, but in the end, I decided to leave them apart. A lot of times, a pair of cues are just begging to be edited together into one track, but with those two, I'm satisfied with them having space between them. I may change my mind at some point, though.

Alternate ending from DVD? We have the ending in bootleg form...

Take a listen to that passage in the rear channels. It's 100% clean and in much better sound quality than the bootleg. (It's nice not having to worry about the speed changes, too.)

This tracklist doesn't so much represent my current playlist, as much as it represents my dream-come-true 6 CD set. I can only hope that in the coming years, whenever someone puts together the inevitable COMPLETE Indiana Jones collection, they follow this:

If I ever got the chance to produce this set, I'd be sure to hire Jason LeBlanc and Datameister to double-check the tracklists. I'd hire Lukas Kendall to write liner notes. And most importantly, I'd hire Neil to make sure the pitch is correct

Haha, that'd be fun. Though we might end up in some serious quibbles about track names and organization and so forth...it'd be funny. :)

Okay, I am so sorry, because I feel like I'm constantly asking for someone to send me more files...but would anyone happen to be generous enough to send me lossless (WAV or FLAC) files of the Raiders DCC release? I DO own the DCC release already, but as I think I already said, I don't have access to the physical product right now - all I have are compressed AAC files on my computer, and it'd be really nice for the sake of editing if I could have lossless versions. If someone happens to get a chance to do that, I would be so grateful...I really doubt I'll put any work into that score until I've either gotten ahold of my discs again or received lossless files from some wonderful JWFfan. :) EDIT: Taken care of. Thanks so much!

I've finished my Raiders edit at last, making my work on the original three scores more or less complete...theoretically. =P Anyway, as you can see, I heavily favor the DCC track names, but most of the music itself is from the Concord release. I've used snippets of the DCC release in places where I thought the cimbalom is mixed too loudly, or the music fades out too soon, or certain instruments can't be heard as well as they should...stuff like that.

I think it's also worth mentioning that I had to put some serious work into fixing the bizarre gong cutoff about a minute into Concord's "The Idol Temple." I don't know how it ended up sounding like that, but one channel does this weird throbbing thing thing, and the other turns into a weird hum and then suddenly cuts off. Gongs - tamtams, if we wanna be exact - don't do that in real life, and while the problem was less noticeable on the DCC release, it was there, too. So I used some fading and artificial reverb to give it a much more natural transition.

I was originally going to do "Desert Chase" as another Concord-based track, with DCC only being used for the missing passages. But then I compared them, and honestly...with a little equalization, the DCC version actually sounded better to me. So I just went with that.

1. South America, 1936 [serious tweaking to fix the bizarre gong cutoff one minute into "The Idol Temple"] [7:56]

2. Temple Escape [DCC 0:56-1:09] [1:34]

3. Flight from Peru [DCC 1:37-end] [2:21]

4. Government Agents [less hissy version from boot or whatever] [1:14]

5. Journey to Nepal [2:12]

6. The Medallion [2:55]

7. To Cairo [DCC 0:23-0:58] [1:30]

8. The Basket Game [5:03]

9. Bad Dates [less hissy version] [1:20]

10. The Map Room: Dawn [DCC 3:26-3:32] [3:54]

11. Reunion - The Dig Begins [DCC for the last chord and repeating measures] [4:11]

12. The Well of Souls [5:28]

13. Uncovering the Ark [5:32]

14. Marion Into the Pit [0:37]

15. Escaping the Pit [1:09]

16. The Mummy Chamber [bootlegged] [2:07]

17. Airplane Fight [4:38]

18. Desert Chase [all DCC, with a little EQ] [8:17]

19. Marion's Theme - The Crate [2:10]

20. The German Sub [1:23]

21. To the Nazi Hideout [3:20]

22. Ark Trek [1:40]

23. The Miracle of the Ark [6:07]

24. The Warehouse - End Credits [6:52]

25. Temple Escape (Insert) [bootlegged] [0:10]

26. Escaping the Pit (Alternate) [bootlegged] [0:42]

Next up...KOTCS! Eventually, that is. I must admit, I'm a little out of the loop on that score in terms of unreleased material - are there any sources of unreleased music from that score aside from the DVD rips? There's a special feature on the DVD that includes some clean unreleased music, isn't there?

Info on KotCS here.

Here's the track list for my complete Raiders edit. All tracks are DCC except otherwise specified... down with the EQed Concord set!

1. The Raiders March (cut to DCC track 19 for no coda)

2. Main Title: South America, 1936 / In the Idol's Temple (DCC tracks 2 and 3 mixed together as in the film)

3. Flight from Peru

4. Washington Men / Indy's Home (Concord)

5. Journey to Nepal

6. The Medallion

7. To Cairo

8. The Basket Game

9. Bad Dates (Concord)

10. The Map Room

11. Reunion / The Dig Begins

12. The Well of the Souls / Uncovering the Ark / Marion into the Pit (DCC track 11 + LP transfer)

13. Escape from the Pit (original version - bootlegged)

14. Airplane Fight

15. Desert Chase

16. Marion's Theme

17. The German Sub / To the Nazi Hideout

18. Ark Trek

19. The Miracle of the Ark

20. The Warehouse / End Credits (DCC track 18, DCC track 1 mixed on final note, cut do DCC track 19 for full end credits, cut to DCC track 1 for ending coda)

21. Escape from the Pit Alternate #1 (Concord version)

22. Escape from the Pit Alternate #2 (old bootleg)

Didn't really feel the 1m3 insert was worth including. And yes, it comes to about 85 minutes, but I only listen in iTunes, so the length isn't an issue. I'm considering using those bootlegged versions of "Washington Men / Indy's Home" and "Bad Dates" instead of the final released ones. Harsh, I know, but at least the EQing is natural and the pitch is correct. Plus, there's a full pause between "The Poisoning" and "Bad Dates." I might be able to EQ the Concord versions to sound better; I just don't know how to EQ very well.

Thanks very much for the link, Henry. I'd forgotten that was there. :(

And I definitely prefer the bootlegged versions of those two cues, by the way. Not only are the EQ and pitch nice, but there's significantly less hiss, as well.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've pretty much finished work on my edits. The music finally doesn't sound disjointed anymore. Instead of adding all the alternates to each 2-disc, which I think messes up the 'listening experience' (I don't think anything should come after the Raiders March end credits), I just added an extra alternates CD, a 'More Music from Indiana Jones' of my own as it were:

01. Raiders March 02.51

02. The Basket Chase (Concert Suite) 04.16

03. Indy Rides the Statue (Alternate) 0.44

04. Escaping the Pit (Alternate) 2.07

05. Map (Film Version) 0.57

06. The Old Priest's Tale (Alternate) 1.44

07. Parade of the Slave Children (Concert Suite) 4.53

08. Discussing the Book (Film Version) 2.09

09. Market Source 1.57

10. Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra (Concert Suite) 2.48

11. Königgrätzer March 3.02

12. Keeping up with the Joneses (Film Version) 1.48

13. Death of Kazim (Film Version) 2.11

14. On the Tank 3.37

15. Spell of the Skull (Alternate) 4.13

16. The Adventures of Mutt (Concert Suite) 3.12

17. Raiders March 5.05

I'm considering throwing in the English Anything Goes as well.

I know this is 11 years late...but does anybody happen to have the "Boat Chase" cue that contains the 3 Mandolin sweeteners? I tried isolating it but the actual mandolins it seems are mixed in with the rest of the sound mix vs the actual score with minimal sfx, would anybody know of, how to get the sweeteners?

Thanks!

They've never leaked. Trying to rip them out of the DVD/Blu is the only way to hear them

Late to the party for this thread, but:

Fortunately, all of the INDY films (and the TV series as well) have perfectly fine OST presentations, so no need for me to make any playlists.

Raiders: Sonic Adventure’s mix, except I don’t need or want the short “Raiders March” at the beginning.

Temple of Doom: Sonic Adventure is again my go-to, but I must admit I haven’t much listened to it.

Last Crusade: From the Concord set, reordered to be mostly chronological (without editing):

01 3-01 Indy’s Very First Adventure
02 3-02 The Boat Scene
03 5-06 Father’s Study
04 3-03 X Marks the Spot
05 3-04 Ah, Rats!!!
06 3-05 Escape from Venice
07 3-06 Journey to Austria
08 3-07 Father and Son Reunited
09 3-08 The Austrian Way
10 3-10 Alarm!
11 3-09 Scherzo For Motorcycle and Orchestra

01 5-07 Marcus is Captured / To Berlin
02 5-08 To the Blimp
03 3-11 No Ticket
04 5-09 The Blimp Turns Around
05 3-12 Keeping Up With the Joneses
06 3-13 Brother of the Cruciform Sword
07 5-10 Death of Kazim
08 3-14 On the Tank
09 3-15 Belly of the Steel Beast
10 3-16 The Canyon of the Crescent Moon
11 3-17 The Penitent Man Will Pass
12 3-18 The Keeper of the Grail
13 5-11 Wrong Choice, Right Choice
14 3-19 Finale & End Credits

Haven’t gotten into Crystal Skull. I do have a short playlist which includes “The Adventures of Mutt” from the KotCS OST as well as the KotCS OST recording of “Raiders March” (and “Marion’s Theme” from Spielberg 3).
