E.T. probably has the greatest Finale of any JW score

I prefer Close Encounters personally.

Probably E.T. for me. I wouldn't call it Williams' best score like some do, but it is fantastic.

As amazing as Temple is, E.T. has a heart to it that Temple, just by the nature of the film, doesn't. For that reason I pick E.T., but both are probably on the same level objectively.

First I must preface stating neither would be my number two....however....Given the choice between the two there is only one possible answer. It is E.T. beyond a shadow of a doubt, no question asked, incontrovertibly and unequivocally. The only way someone could answer Temple of Doom is because they have such deep love for the score itself they are unable to be objective about it.

Sounds as though someone is unable to be objective about E.T..

As an orchestral showpiece, Temple of Doom would seem to have the edge. But E.T. is closer to my heart.

By the way, I think John means that Empire would likely win in a poll of top (John Williams) film scores of all time.

It's a scientifically proven fact that Empire wins every poll it's in, followed by ET. Henry started it, I just went to the next logical destination. :)

Didn't it win the official JWfan top ten list?

True, but that poll predates Munich, so it's meaningless now. ;)

It's kind of unfair to compare these two scores since they are drastically different in tone. The ESB VS TOD poll made sense because they were both action/adventure scores. But I don't for a moment consider ET an action/adventure score (only in a couple cues). So, I for one can't choose between these two because they are too different in style, and too different in their source films.

Will TOD VS JURASSIC PARK be next? ;)

I agree. But what would win a "CEOTTK finale vs. E.T. finale" poll? That is the question?

ET.

And before we continue, I think Raiders, Star Wars, Superman: The Movie, and Close Encounters are superior to Temple also. Don't get me wrong, Temple is a great great score, and it's wonderful to finally have this expanded CD of it, but I'm not sure it makes it into my top 10 Williams scores. It may come very close though...

E.T's finale absolutely destroys that of CEotTK, which is no mean feat.

This is true.

E.T. has absolutely fantastic music, but as a whole, there seems to be a lot of "dead space." Whereas ToD is pretty exciting all the way through, so my vote goes for ToD.

This is porbably true, but the best parts in E.T. (like the last 15 minutes...) destroy almost every other soundtrack in the cinema story (inlcuding TOD best parts...).

So I go with E.T.

Doom by a slim margin. Maybe its just the freshness of this newly released ToD music, but it all just sounds phenomenal to me, even the previously released stuff that now seems much better developed. However, ET was one of the first JW soundtracks I owned, along with Jurassic Park, so it holds a special place for me. Definitely both are in the top 5, but Doom just out-funs ET.

This means my top five looks like this:

1. Empire Strikes Back

2. Temple of Doom

3. ET

4. Raiders

5. Star Wars

Clearly, I'm an action/adventure Williams fan. Rounding out the top 10 would be Superman, Return of the Jedi, Last Crusade, Hook and Prisoner of Azkaban.

The poll question is missing!

"Which do you like better?"

"Which is the better score?"

"Which is more popular?"

"Which do you enjoy listening more?"

"Which do you think should have won an Oscar?"

But I voted for E.T. :P
