I am currently listening to Wanted for the first time. As I expected, I do not really like the synthesized percussion and electric guitar, but they do not bother me enough to destroy the experience. "Success Montage" is, as constantly said, awesome.

Another thing I've been meaning to say, off another thing Henry said, is the underwhelming action music. It's too bad that Kondo just doesn't seem to be able to write a sustained, exciting action cue. That's the one area, more than any other, that he gets killed by Uematsu.

Nope, I said it was minimalistic. I think it works for Wind Waker. These games, in my opinion, don't demand action music of the sort Uematasu writes. Twilight Princess has some pretty epic action music, too.

Fair enough, a misinterpretation on my part. Plus, for some reason I had LttP on the brain when I wrote that. I listened to some of Ocarina last night, and the action music is in fact quite good.

(But if you're looking for the absolute best go for Uematsu first. :cool: )

Alright, then what's your favorite Uematsu?

Final Fantasys VI-IX are his peak IMO, anything from in there. And definately get a hold of the live concert pieces if you can, there's a lot out there.

I listened to some of Ocarina last night, and the action music is in fact quite good.

I think his action music is an acquired taste, one that I have yet to acquire.

Once Zelda went three-dimensional the dungeon music changed, now it is practically just sound effects. Not that I'm complaining, I think it works, but it would be nice to have musical accompaniment like there was in the 2D games.

I'll take a page from Henry's book here, minimalist is exactly right for the dungeon music, it sets the perfect mood. Dodgono's Cavern from Ocarina for instance, what atmosphere!

I prefer "Jabu-Jabu's Belly", with all of those weird noises. And the Link noises in "Forest Temple" are pretty funny, too.

(Currently listening to Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet. I love the Montague and Capulets theme.)

Just finished the brilliant Starship Troopers by Basil Poledouris for the first time. Love it!

Now playing: Les Miserables :cool:

I think Basil has just become one of my most favoritist composers ever! :lol:

It leaked a long time ago. All though when I got my copy of the Special Edition 2-DVD set I ripped the iso score and then what tracks weren't there, I took from the sessions. So ya...I've sent you a PM regarding this.

Just listened to Rolfe Kent's About Schmidt; GREAT, great score, and I'm even more mystified as to how it was overlooked for an Oscar nomination (even if 2002 was yet again a year that was taken by Lord of the Rings).

:P to "Dinner with Randall's Relatives", "Randall's Room", and "Schmidt Leaves for Bed". LOVE them.

All this Uematsu talk makes me want to get FFVII. Thats my favorite game of all time and the music is ingrained in my head. Too bad the music isn't with a full orchestra. Should I buy this? FFVII

Last score I listened to was Batman: TAS. I liked moments of it, but it's hard to stay invested because it's so episodic. Without studying the track titles as I listen, without having the book nearby, and without any memory of the specific episode action onscreen, it's hard to follow. It's good music, and I'll buy all the Batman TAS score releases, but I need more listens. I think this will be listen #3.

I guess I can see that; I know I've had stuff like that where it took some time to sink in.

I actually didn't remember much of the score to "Perchance to Dream," and there were several others I was more excited about when I saw the track listing, but I think that may be my favorite score on the set--it's a close call with "Two-Face," but "My Life is a Dream" and the entire climax (starting with the robust brass variation of Mad Hatter's theme with those bells tolling! Yeah baby!).

I'm really looking forward to MOTP. I got an shipping notification a day or two ago, so hopefully it'll be here soon.

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi

This was my first complete run of these scores in a long time, probably ever. It appears I wasn't missing much. There were a few cues on ESB that I enjoyed. There was one I really liked, but I forgot which, I think it was "Rescue From Cloud City/Hyperspace." ROTJ didn't have much to offer. I quite liked "Sail Barge Assault" and parts of "The Battle Of Endor" cues. "Jedi Rocks" almost made me vomit.

Dylan overplayed? Maybe I chose the wrong word. Everyone knows JW's most famous themes, that's why they're the most famous. Dylan is famous for Like A Rolling Stone, but a lot of his music is definitely not overplayed, considering the man has 400+ songs.

It's a good thing Hans Zimmer doesn't do well with album sales or inspire other composers to imitate his sound...otherwise, you wouldn't like him, either! Oh, wait...

Besides, I'm really having a bit of trouble remembering the last time I heard "The Battle of Hoth" played on the radio. Or on someone else's sound system. Or being hummed by someone else. Or being performed in a concert. Or saw it on a friend's list of favorite songs. And that's one of the better known series of cues from that score, concert suites aside. Assuming Star Wars scores are all about Luke's theme and Vader's theme - which ARE overplayed - is about as naive as assuming that time travel enables one to change the past.

I never said Hans Zimmer wasn't overplayed. Pirates Of The Caribbean definitely is, and just because I defend the guy's music from the people who bash it, doesn't mean I listen to it all the time. I hardly do.

I am not sure if you are giving a compelling argument, Koray. One could easily say the same of John Williams. While the Main Theme and Imperial March are severely over-played, I would not say the same of those entire two scores. But I doubt you want to argue about this, so I will leave it at that.

I could understand how someone could find bits--maybe even a majority--of the original SW scores to be boring, but I cannot in my right mind believe that there aren't at least a couple of standouts. Koray, try listening from 2:00 and on of "Ben Kenobi's Death/TIE Fighter Attack." That cue is certainly not overplayed or boring.

It's his music collection. He bought and/or acquired it himself. He can listen to what he wants, when he wants. We are not better people for telling him otherwise.

Images by John Williams: This one is some of the most adventurous writing JW has ever done for a film. A brilliant depiction of a fractured mind. Certainly the dichotomy of the melodic and "sane" music and the eerie and unsettling orchestral effects and noises is effective. Williams wrote a haunting main theme for this score and on the Blood Moon track it receives a stunning string orchestra performance that is absolutely spine tingling.

And isn't it a shame that the way JW scored the Love Montage did not become a standard of how they should be scored :lol:

Perhaps the world is not ready for such things yet.

Quantum Of Solace - I still find myself skipping thru cues on this score, the electronics are too much ad mixed to loud, makes it sound like DAD, plus Arnold not being involved in the title song really hurts the score. Compared to the outstanding work on Casino Royale, this sounds weak and bland.

Very true. But if he's going to make statements about why he dislikes them, he ought to at least be consistent with those reasons, and those reasons shouldn't be easily refutable.

I said they are overplayed, which is true, and that I find them boring. Where's the inconsistency? I've been saying that probably ever since I started posting here. Rich is the only person that has finally realized it.

Schindler's List by John Williams: One of his most beautiful and powerful scores that has a real timeless quality for me. The first CD I ever bought. Music that can stand on its own and made the movie a much more powerful experience.

Yes, yes, yes. Although the synth samples aren't that good, it's still a classic. Aeris' theme, the main theme, and One Winged Angel are three of Uemastu's best.

VII is probably my favorite Uematsu score, although that has quite a bit to do with my love for the game.
