Every few days I will post a thread on a random score from my collection that we can discuss and rate. I made a playlist on my computer with one track of each score I've got, so by using the random play option, I'll be able to post a truly random score each time. Hopefully this will allow us to discuss some scores that would otherwise never be discussed. Also we can record the rating so that we can create a full list of the ratings given to scores by JWFan.com.

This is a continuation of a series of polls I started before I left. One of the last scores I posted was ToD, but now that we actually have an expanded version, I post it again, just to get things going again and see if anybody's opinion on the score has changed. Stand by for new entries in the score rating polls shortly.

Today's score is El Cid by Miklós Rósza. Are you familiar with it? What do you like about it? What don't you like about it? How do do you think it works in the film? What are your favourite tracks?

So far JWFan has rated:

See Soundtrack Ratings by JWFan.com.

This web page contains the ratings from all my previous polls as well as those of Blumenkohl's.

Final ratings are converted to a 1-10 rating for both rating systems so that they can be compared.

5 stars.

The re-recording appears to be the only way we will be able to enjoy the complete score but that's not a bad thing because it's a wonderful recording. I have the Chapter III album that features 45 minutes of the actual score, the Sedares re-recording and the Tadlow. The Tadlow recording is about as close as you can get to the original performance.

It's on The Great Fantasy Adventure Album. It featured "Entry Of The Nobles" which wasn't available on any of the El Cid releases prior to the Tadlow set, as far as I know.

Thought so. It's been a while since I listened to that album

Listening to it, though, you can really hear JW's knod to Rozsa in "The Flag Parade" from SW:TPM

I think its more clear if you listen parade of the charioteers.

(With Rokas you meant Rozsa, right?)

lol...yes. I'll have to change that. I knew a guy named Rokas. Must have been a slip...

And yes, Parade of the Charioteers is the more clear nod, but you hear it in El Cid as well

How could anyone vote this one 1 star??

And Tadlow's site is safe. They will use your PayPal address on file unless you specify another one. Pretty sure that you always choose your address before the funds get transferred.

Silva Screen has a few on their Ebay page:

Hm, I'm a bit wary of their site. When I click the cover, I go straight to PayPal. Shouldn't I enter a shipping adress somewhere first?

Paypal has your shipping address

Hmm, we have two bums who voted #1. This score is 5/5 perfection in every sense of the word.

PayPal asks you to log in first, then give the address, then confirm the sale. At least it's a bona fide Paypal transaction, and not like LaLaLand: please enter the number of the CD you want to buy in the comments field. Nothing against LaLaLand, because I did get my CD, but it just seemed weird at first.

Having listened to the complete edition a couple of times now, this has to be my favourite Rósza score; possibly even my favourite Golden Age score. There's an incredible wealth of good music in this one!

BTW: Does anyone know anything about the difference between the previou re-recording and the new complete one? Which one is the better performance? Are there any major differences? I'm not familiar enough with them.

well i think the re-recording is complete where the OST is that, just and OST. There was some other short re-recording.

I think there re-recordings are regarded as very faithful to the originals so they are the best option since old recordings are going to sound somewhat worse due to old technology and age of the tapes.

The music-only tracks are long gone sadly. All that exists are the few tracks on the Cloud Nine "Great Epic Film Scores" compilation which were from the music and effects tracks (overtures, and such that wouldn ot have had had sound effects added).

The EMI/Sony/Chapter III album was a re-recording from 60's. It's pretty good, but there's a wealth of material on the complete Tadlow that was never heard before. There's also the KOCH re-recording that many have a negative opinion about, I've never heard it myself.

I'm looking for the recordings on the Cloud Nine compilation for a project that I'm working on, so if anyone could spare recordings of it...

I have the CD. What do you need?
