Every few days I will post a thread on a random score from my collection that we can discuss and rate. I made a playlist on my computer with one track of each score I've got, so by using the random play option, I'll be able to post a truly random score each time. Hopefully this will allow us to discuss some scores that would otherwise never be discussed. Also we can record the rating so that we can create a full list of the ratings given to scores by JWFan.com.

Today's score is Congo by Jerry Goldsmith. Are you familiar with it? What do you like about it? What don't you like about it? How do do you think it works in the film? What are your favourite tracks?

So far JWFan has rated:

See Soundtrack Ratings by JWFan.com.

This web page contains the ratings from all my previous polls as well as those of Blumenkohl's.

Final ratings are converted to a 1-10 rating for both rating systems so that they can be compared.

3,5 stars.

It's Goldsmith action-adventure routine, but what theme and what energy it has.

Just a bit of history: 'Congo' was composed while Goldsmith was working on 'First Knight'. It was a problem-ridden project which was edited up to the 11th hour and Goldsmith reportedly had a nightmare working on 10 different finales, which is why you only get tracked music in the last reels.

The cue 'Bail Out' (the parachute sequence) is one of the greatest action cues of Goldsmith's later ouevre, with Goldsmith saying that he squeezed in a romanian ditty for faux-romanian Tim Curry in.

The 'Medicine Man' styled romantic music is very thin and is proof again that this kind of stuff wasn't exactly Goldsmith's forte, while the traveling music is great fun...he just rules this stuff.

The Lebo M song uses Goldsmith's theme and isn't that bad...the CD omits some hefty action cues, such as the escape from the airport.

I gave it 3 stars; it's pretty good, but nothing overly special. The main theme is good and some of the action music is too.

As is the jungly music. Actually, I should've given it a 3,5.

The Lebo M song uses Goldsmith's theme

doesnt Lebo M make the lirics and conduct the choir, while the music is from someone else?

Goldsmith composed the score, Lebo M wrote the lyrics to Goldsmith's music.

I'll give it a 3.5, there are some solid cues, "Bailout", "Deep Jungle" and "Spirit Of Africa"; both opening and closing titles.

Some cool moments but overall pretty standard and uninteresting stuff. Fortunately, he provided us with the far, far superior The Ghost and The Darkness.

'Congo' was on Goldsmith's plate much earlier...in 1981 or so (he told that in an interview). It would've been interesting to hear this version, although i love the theme of the later Frank Marshall film, so i'm not too sad about this aborted project.
