They, like so many labels, refused to embrace the digital age for everything they could (I've never noticed any scores released by them on digital download sites).

I'm not saying they deserved to die, but I think there's more they could have done.

Well, I'm pretty sure I've seen Jaws in iTunes

You haven't looked hard enough Rich, there's a lot of Decca material on iTunes. Besides, the article states their death is because of the guy who runs them and his lack of respect. I don't see where digital downloads even come into this.

Ok, fair play, I just sort of skimmed the article.

Where do digital downloads come in? Well I'm not talking just about them, but it's pretty noticeable that the music industry is having a hard time adapting to the digital age, and their pessimistic attitudes to file sharing - it can't have helped Decca amongst their other problems.

Has anyone checked their CD collection for Decca releases? Besides Angela's Ashes, I couldn't find any (:)) . I do have a lot of Teldec, EMI and Deutsche Grammaphon.

I have the Solti Ring Box, the Rachmaninov Piano concertos, Prokofiev's complete concertos, Prokofiev's Cinderella, Bartok's Concert for Orchestra, Mozart's Requiem, Wagner's Overtures and quite a few others.

Herrman's Phase4 albums, the Entartete Musik series (including Mauceri's Korngold recordings), Dutoit's Planets, Karajan's Boris Godunov, several Shostakovichs, a Ralph Vaughan Williams 2-disc set, complete sets of Schumann's and Sibelius' symphonies, anything ever recorded by Solti, at least one Rolling Stones album, and several more.

Plus various soundtracks which aren't as easily recogniseable becaues they don't have the familiar Decca spine design. I think The Mummy is on Decca?

Without having to leave my chair I can see the complete Shostakovich quartets and Symphonies, Bach's Well-Tempered Klavier played by Schiff (great performance!) and at least a dozen other CDs on Decca and London.

This is really sad news.

EDIT: I have 51 Decca/London CDs with me in the States. I probably have a damn site more back in England.

Quite a bit of John Barry's recent stuff is on Decca (Beyondness Of Things, Playing By Heart, Enigma, etc.). I am completely shocked that such a long-standing, and respectable compamy could close down. I shall miss it a lot.

Actually, I don't so much feel like an idiot. However, the initial news seemed incredibly true. I believed it hook line and sinker. The sad fact is that in this day of economic crisis, with companies like Wedgewood Royal Doulton going into receivership after 250 years in business, coupled with the incredibly poor sales of classical and soundtrack CDs, the news of a well-loved and erstwhile successful specialist CD company going bust seems horribly realistic. Whether the news ended up being well-founded or not, it really brought home how fragile the classical music industry has become these days.

I agree.
