Have to vote "unfamiliar" here. Never even heard of it's existance.

It's early -- and great -- Doyle. His sister's vocals, while somewhat repetitive, are gorgeous, and the harp/guitar work is vintage Doyle. The brief action cues have that slightly frantic, breathless quality characteristic of early Doyle, but, here, it works -- and in some ways it sounds almost temperate compared to his recent bombast.

I still want to see the film. I hear it's good.

I gave it 3.5 stars. I adore Celtic music and Doyle does a great job of writing music that fits that genre naturally. My only negatives have to do with how the music is presented on CD. The Doyle music doesn’t begin until track 9 and then the tracks are short (some less than a minute) that there is no time for the themes to develop and expand. I have only seen the movie once and that was a while ago, so I can’t really comment on how the music worked in the movie.

While I too am not overly fond of Doyle’s bombastic scores, I still enjoy his quieter and less mainstream efforts. A few of my favorites from his post-leukemia period include: East-West (depressing Russian saga with fantastic swimming theme performed by Emanuel Ax), Secondhand Lions (fun, light-hearted salute to swashbucklers) and As You Like It (another great collaboration with Kenneth Branagh that sounds a bit like Much Ado About Nothing goes to Japan).

We're in agreement. By the way, do you listen to Loreena McKennitt at all? Have you listened to the Danna brothers' forays into Celtic music?

I tend to group this one in with Indochine in my Doyle collection -- scores I respect more than I enjoy. As for As You Like It, I'm still keen on listening to it, as I am Love's Labour's Lost.

Loreena McKennitt is a favorite. Her voice is so haunting that my favorite songs are those that simply feature her accompanied on mainly piano and cello. Of course Dante’s Prayer is well known to figure skating fans after Michelle Kwan’s exquisite performance. And, while I am not a fan of songs on film score CD’s, I think The Mystic’s Dream married well with the music from The Mists of Avalon (my favorite Lee Holdridge score).

As for As You Like It, I'm still keen on listening to it, as I am Love's Labour's Lost.

I am most eager to hear his Violin Concerto in F and hope it will be released on CD soon. As I am sure you are aware, he incorporated the Violin Romance from As You Like It into it.

As You Like It is a very interesting score and I am surprised so many people who have heard don't like it.

As for Doyle's Into the West, I haven't heard it. I have Zanelli's one and it sounded like The Last Samurai (on which he collaborated with Zimmer) in the Wild West.
