Every few days I will post a thread on a random score from my collection that we can discuss and rate. I made a playlist on my computer with one track of each score I've got, so by using the random play option, I'll be able to post a truly random score each time. Hopefully this will allow us to discuss some scores that would otherwise never be discussed. Also we can record the rating so that we can create a full list of the ratings given to scores by JWFan.com.

After a while of no polls due to me being a bit busy, I'll try and be posting some again over the coming days/weeks.

Today's score is Waterworld by James Newton Howard. Are you familiar with it? What do you like about it? What don't you like about it? How do do you think it works in the film? What are your favourite tracks?

So far JWFan has rated:

See Soundtrack Ratings by JWFan.com.

This web page contains the ratings from all my previous polls as well as those of Blumenkohl's.

Final ratings are converted to a 1-10 rating for both rating systems so that they can be compared.

I will happily admit, that, although I do not like the film, I like this score a lot. When it comes to JNH, I prefer the urban, gritty scores of "The Saint Of Fort Washington", "Falling Down", and "Grand Canyon" (IMO, his undisputed masterpiece!), rather than his big, expansive, epic scores sush as "Wyatt Earp". That does not mean to say the the epic scores do not have merit; they do. I guess that, when it comes to JNH, I prefer "smaller" scores. Of course, you could ask me to rate "The Village"...

I give it 4 stars today, but it's probably closer to 4,5. There's two very good themes and a lot of good enthusiastic action music and also a couple of quite beautiful cues, like "Swimming". There's some uninteresting music, but the fun of the rest of the music largely makes up for it.

Personally I also like the film for whatever reason; probably because there's a lot of water involved. :P

Top notch effort considering the absolute disaster of a film he had to score.

4.5 stars.

Unlike classics like 'Vertical Limit', 'Freedomland' or 'Lady in the Water'...

It's a bit workmanlike, but still, the action is relentless, typical Newton-Howard Williams-cum-Goldsmith hybrid style, it has an epic choir and amazingly, given the fact that it was written in 4 weeks, a solid structure to most of the longer pieces...a bit 'Atlantis', a bit 'Outbreak', if you like those, you like this one...

I've always loved this score, from the great main theme and fun action pieces to the beautiful stuff like "Swimming"

And the film is far from one of the worst of all time like it's always made out to be. It's a fun 90's action adventure movie that isn't perfect, but is an enjoyable 2 hours. The longer TV version is a big improvement over the theatrical cut too.

I've only ever seen the film on TV or on DVD. Is the longer version on the DVD? What's different?

You're damn right it's not perfect. They are all on that ship stranded in the ocean because they have no gas. Well, all the jet skis they love to go riding around on have gas. Not to mention the plane on the ship.

Yes, the longer version was recently released on DVD. Unfortunately, since it was made for TV, the violence and swear-words were cut out, and the picture quality isn't as good as the theatrical cut either. But I still recommend checking it out if you already like the short version

So they added stuff and cut out stuff? What's so hard about keeping what's there and adding the rest? Agh...

What's added in the extended cut?

The longer cut was assembled for ABC, so they had to remove the swears and whatever violence wouldn't be suitable for normal tv viewing.
