Pieter Boelen 633
Every few days I will post a thread on a random score from my collection that we can discuss and rate. I made a playlist on my computer with one track of each score I've got, so by using the random play option, I'll be able to post a truly random score each time. Hopefully this will allow us to discuss some scores that would otherwise never be discussed. Also we can record the rating so that we can create a full list of the ratings given to scores by JWFan.com.Today's score is Ben Hur by Miklós Rósza. Are you familiar with it? What do you like about it? What don't you like about it? How do do you think it works in the film? What are your favourite tracks? So far JWFan has rated:See Soundtrack Ratings by JWFan.com.This web page contains the ratings from all my previous polls as well as those of Blumenkohl's.Final ratings are converted to a 1-10 rating for both rating systems so that they can be compared. JoeinAR 1,759
ditto what Mark said, there is so much emotion, so much valor in this score. EPIC=BEN HUR
Ollie 859
Rozsa's "Star Of Bethlehem" is one of the loveliest cues I've heard.
MSM 85
4.5It's a bit bombastic but this score is the beginning of a new era of film music, a classic. The Miracle and Finale cue is probably my fav Rozsa cue ever. It also has strongly inspired the Revenge of the Sith theme.

I only voted for it a few minutes ago and gave it 5 stars. If anything it deserves more than 5 stars. One of the best motion picture scores of all time. Often imitated....never bettered. Wojo 2,442
I don't know which is better, Ben-Hur or El Cid. I know I listen to El Cid more nowadays, but that's because I've not had it for as long.

Pieter Boelen 633
I gave it 4 stars. I especially like the Overture and the Battle tracks. The rest don't really interest me all that much, but I never gave it a proper listen either. I like El Cid more though.

tjguitar 0
I did 4.5, it's not quite El Cid, and the RHino runs a bit long for me, I prefer the Sony 2 disc which has 2 LP ALbums + a few original tracks.

Melange 446
Ben-Hur, Miklós RószaI've had the Rhino 2CD for a number of years now. I haven't listened to it in the last year or so I guess, but it really is a great score and the 'epic' packaging that the Rhino set is in only adds to that. It's like a slab of the the Ten Commandement's or something. One of my favouritesis the rowing music for the Galley scenes. Once you've got that playing through a meaty pair of speakers, it's fantastic. You can see the on Youtube. Very simple, but very effective music. Oh the drudge of being a Galley slave! "Oh you're going to pay for this Messala. Oh yeah, you're gonna pay, Boy". So many beautiful pieces in that score, and the surreal music for Yeshua is really sublime. Wojo 2,442
If you had to listen to only a single disc for a couple hours on repeat, the second disc of the Rhino Ben-Hur is a very enjoyable listening experience. The tragic music of the leper discovery, the main titles reprised in the entr'acte, the glorious chariot music, and the gorgeous music of the finale...it doesn't get much better than that.
