The Quick Question Thread

I'm a bit of a digital hoarder - I never delete anything I've purchased and I rarely delete promos/sessions, etc unless I'm pretty convinced that I'm not interested in the score. I still have just over a TB of storage on my PC and I could free a whole load more by deleting some Blu-ray rips.

My main problem is my backup drives are filling up, but my acquisition of new music isn't very fast right now and external hard drives are not expensive so I'm not worried about that.

The only files I ever delete are mp3s that are in my 'listening' folder if I decide to re-curate an album or just delete somthing I never listen to.

I delete. In recent years, I want to curate my collection more and more.

And hard drive is tricky for me. I have the collection (about 350 GB -- no lossless, all mp3s!) backed up on an external hard drive (as well as my dad's NAS), but I want all of it, all 3000-ish albums, on my laptop at any given time. So I need a laptop with minimum 1TB hard drive. Those are getting rarer and rarer these days, unless you buy a "gaming" laptop, which I have no interest in. I dread the day I have to play my collection via a plugged-in external hard drive or a cloud. *shudder*

What are you talking about?  1TB laptop hard drives are like $40

When I bought my current laptop some 3-4 years ago, the store employee (one of the biggest electronics chain stores in Norway, incidentally) had to look long and hard to find a laptop with 1TB integrated hard drive. I think they had, like, two (that weren't gaming laptops). Most of them had tiny hard drives of 250 GB and 500 GB. Because, as he said, nobody needs large hard drives anymore, they use external hard drives or clouds (or streams). I wanted to say "fuck you", but didn't, LOL. So if it was rare then, I'm guessing it's even more difficult now. I think I paid some $700 or $800, so don't know where your figure of $40 comes from.

Probably from an internet retailer, maaaybe a smaller store.

I just got a laptop with 1 TB Solid State Drive for around 1000

Ah, you're talking about a hard drive, not a laptop.

Yeah, he gave me that option, i.e. install an extra harddrive on it (for example 2x500), but I want it to be ONE drive of 1TB. That was the tricky part, apparently.

You can easily put a hard drive into a laptop yourself.  All you need is a screwdriver.

I would recommend an external SSD drive that you can plug into your laptop by USB. Then you even don't need a screw driver.

Gosh, no screwdrivers and fooling around on my own. I've burnt myself on those things before, as I have the practical skills of a soft ice.

It's a simple thing I want - a laptop with ONE drive of minimum 1TB, perfectly integrated, no messing around on my own, no external thingamabobs. But beggars can't be choosers, I suppose.

Right. I think for now I'm definitely not going to start with FLAC, except with the CDs I physically buy and therefore treasure. I'm not deleting anything, but I did just start a smaller version of my music library for the phone. Currently having lots of fun mixing 24 different Four Seasons performances to get to my ultimate version for each track. I love the idea of a library that only contains two versions of every classical work I have (one HIP, one on normal instruments).

Hello. I wanted to ask somethingl

I'm just watching Lawrence of Arabia.

I understand this re-recording is the complete score:

Lawrence_arabia_TADLOW012.jpg

Does anyone know why the original recordings haven't been released by now?

Have they been lost, or it's just one of those unreleased yet things?

Just listen to this one and you'll be fine

That's the one I have. Not with that cover, but same content. All I ever need.

I don't generally like re-recordings, even if they sound "better".

I had hoped it was a situation of the complete original recordings just not released yet.

Anyway, thanks for the replies..

It doesn't just "sound" better, it's simply a better orchestral performance, too. At least from what I remember. The OST recording of the overture always left me cold.

The whole score itself leaves me somewhat cold in the film itself. A lot of it feels small, quaint, almost too funny here and there. The full rerecording really gives it weight and lets it soar.

Anyone here a Letterboxd member, and if so, have you ever received a "VIP" invitation to an advanced screening?

If by member you mean being registered there, I am. I used the site for making lists awhile back when MUBI had trouble with their list interface (still not very intuitive, btw). But I've never seen any films there, and certainly never received any VIP invites.

Can someone very kind JWfaner please put me out of my misery?

What is the piece of music that Natalie Wood and her friends are playing, when Christopher Walken gets home, in BRAINSTORM?

"Trout Quintet" by Schubert.  Not sure which movement.

At least as indicated here:  https://filmboards.com/t/Brainstorm/music-piano-piece-1595451/

Star Wars (1977) was filmed at Elstree Studios in London as was Kubrick's "The Shining" (1980).  I just watched a behind the scenes video of the Shining and wonder if the crew had as little faith and disrespect for Kubrick's film as they did for Star Wars.  Both Kubrick and Lucas were highly regarded at this time and both were visionary directors but Kubrick seems to have a firmer grasp on his production.  First is this true that Kubrick was held in greater respect by the production crew than Lucas at that time?    Perhaps the Elstree crew was just cynical to all and hated everyone?  I'm curious to know how Kubrick was perceived by this same crew compared to Lucas?

Alas, when your movie is, like The Hobbit, about an unlikely hero prevailing against impossible odds, it does become tempting to mythologise the movie's making along similar lines, and turn it into the "little engine that could."

And just as it becomes tempting for the creator to present it in that way, it becomes tempting for the fans to accept that reading.

Um, anyone else receiving e-mails accusing them of "jerking off to child porn" and demanding bitcoin repayment? I find it worrying that these sick e-mails seem to be paying off. Plus, why is Microsoft unable to do anything moer than mark them as spam?

I think that it's up to individuals to mark to mark them as spam. I sympathise.

I don't even open those kinds of e-mails. I'm able to judge what they're about by a few words and the subject, and send them straight to electronic hell.

Agreed, not sure there's much you can do aside from mark them as spam. Apple mail seems to filter them all out... I get some with "we know what you did" type threats. Not nice, but still just junk to frighten people.

Well, stop jerking off to child porn.

I'm sure that our Bes was joking... at least, I hope he was...

Anyhoo... although child pornography is sickening to think about - and quite rightly so - Bespin's intent was to make a joke about someone masturbating to child porn, and not the subject itself.

Pornography comes in all shapes and sizes. I have worked with adults (psychiatric patients - very disturbed psychiatric patients) who have used clothes catalogs, or the pages of a Toys R Us magazine, to get their sexual kicks with, because they contain images of children of all ages.

Pornography doesn't have to be pictures of naked women with their legs spread. Sometimes it can be as innocent as a toy catalog.... and the scary thing is, it's all perfectly legal.

I don't know what I find more disturbing though: the people doing it or the people composing these messages, which presumably get reactions. It must mean there's money to be found in such methods.
