Shakira

Since Shakira is music, I'm hoping I'm posting this in the right forum. Otherwise, feel free to move it to "Off Topic".

So, based on the "Quick Question" thread, people here either don't know who Shakira is, or they have a severe misunderstanding of who she is.

We'll start with the basics:

- Was born poor in Colombia on February 2nd, 1977.

- Is part Colombian, part Lebanese.

- Has been singing and dancing her whole life.

- Has a very high IQ.

- Writes and produces all of her own music.

- Founded a charity called "Pies Descalzos" (Bare Feet) when she was 18, for poor children in South America. Several schools have been built through the foundation.

- Has a new album coming out this year.

Now, the general opinion of Shakira is that she isn't really a singer, she is more of a sexy bellydancer. Well, she does bellydance quite well (as a tribute to her Lebanese blood), but she actually does sing quite well. Here are some examples (Youtube links) of her voice:

Ojos Asi (Eyes Like These) Live at MTV Unplugged- Shakira won Best Female Pop Vocal at the 1st Latin Grammys for this:

Inevitable Live at Live Earth- Check out that long note at 2:48:

Estoy Aqui Live at MTV Unplugged- The finale is considered one of Shakira's best moments:

A collection of good Shakira vocals (with English songs):

And I guess I'll share an example of her dancing:

I've noticed that many people here seem to think that all modern pop-stuff is just bad, and none of the current celebs have talent. Well, hopefully this post will help redeem Shakira in your minds.

While reading this whole thing, I was wondering how JW came into this. Well, he didn't.

I like Shakira. I'm not especially a big fan, but she's certainly hot and she has some good songs. :)

Maybe John Williams is Shakira's fan too?

Without a doubt.

Don't underestimate him. I bet he also has a singed copy of Crimson Tide on his shelf.

More likely, Shakira might be a John Willams fan.

Btw I like Shakira writing her own songs.

I think she is sort of pretty and her music is bland and inoffensive.

She's not earned the right to be a one named star like Cher or Madonna.

Beyonce Knowles hasn't earned that right either, and that girl has even less talent.

She can sing, and she is very hot.

That makes it 2:0 for Shakira vs. John Williams.

And I'd marry her, but not John Williams.

Cool, sexy name, too.

"Johnny" was cool too, though.

I'd much rather have (a poster of) Shakira in my bed(room), however.

With such a high IQ she should write better music. I hadn't heard her music before, but after such praise on this thread I was expecting something... I feel disappointed.

According to those who have followed her career, her music was much better before she "americanized" her songs.

She's cute and can move her hips.

What about Bob Dylan? ;)

ugly to look at, and his singing makes peoples ears hurt. Brilliant only as a songwriter.

Ummm where do you live??

I dont have any CD of her, but really with the TV, radio, etc... it's rather hard being from Spain and have not heard anything of her... ;)

I don't watch TV and don't go out to any pubs where her music is prone to be played. Radio... I only tune in Radio Clásica.

Her name means "woman full of grace" in Arabic.

And many people think her lyrics are very poetic. For example:

"Yesterday I saw a sky without sun, and a man without land.

A saint in a prison, and a sad song without an owner.

But then I saw your dark eyes, and now I truly can't live without them.

I ask the heavens for one wish, to live in your eyes.

I've traveled the world over, and now I tell you one thing:

From Bechain to Beruit, the North to the South pole,

I could not find eyes like yours"

Ummm...

What about the musical background of shops... something :P

Dont get me wrong... I'm not at all a fan of her. (John Williams (and Giacchino... and baños...) is the only one in my heart ;) ) I have never heard anything from her 'consciously' or deliberately. I just know who she was and how she sounds...
