Saturday Night Live 45x12 JJ Watt / Luke Combs

The video game sketch was pretty funny

Saturday Night Live 45x13 RuPaul / Justin Bieber

ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz

Saturday Night Live 45x14 John Mulaney / David Byrne

I haven't seen this Mulaney guy is much else (only heard him on Big Mouth I think) but everytime he hosts SNL it's a better-than-usual episode and this one was no exception.  I liked Michael Che giving up and drinking on air

Saturday Night Live 45x15 Daniel Craig / The Weeknd

One of the better SNL eps in a long while.  Craig was really good the whole night, from the opening James Bond sketch to the pretty damn funny Quotes sketch.  Too bad the return of Debbie Downer was sub-par, though.

The day before yesterday I finally managed to finish The Good Place.

I really liked the finale, heartwarming and adequate to each character. It's pretty rare to see a show providing such satisfatory endings for every character, and I loved the brought up other people that haven't been on the show in a long time: Doug Forcett, Mindy St. Clair, Derek, etc.

On the other hand, even the guy who liked frogs returned, but where's Simone? She just ran away and never returned to the show, when even the gossip guy did. And she was a crucial character on S3 and S4.

I was also a little disappointed that Michael

Spoiler

became a human at already an advanced age. I thought he was going to have a human life since birth. He never experienced childhood, growing up, being young, marriage, etc., which are all crucial parts of human experience, he came to Earth at, what, on his 60s, 70s?

Aside from that, a great ending for the show.

Simone was definitely in the last episode, at the big dinner scene.

The only returning character they couldn't get for the finale was Eleanor's mom, because the actress was unavailable

I've started a rewatch of Futurama - first time I've really watched it in probably a decade. God I've missed it - damn good television. I was pretty disappointed it didn't make it to Disney+ like The Simpsons did. Not sure if it's due to the content or some ownership issues with the show & Fox. I've had to buy the seasons on YouTube since I don't do DVDs/Blu-ray anymore.

I guess they should've given her a line of dialogue, something that at least acknowledged her importance to the main story arc (specially Chidi's) over the last 2 seasons. Even Doug and John had interactions with Chidi and Tahani on the final episode.

Also, Doug's original actor (Chuck from Better Call Saul) was unavailable as well, right? Because they did recast a younger version of him, which at least made a decent joke.

Modern Family 11x13 Paris

Modern Family 11x14 Spuds

The show is really limping to the finish lean, here's hoping they have something genuinely interested to do in the final 4 episodes

Schitt's Creek 6x04 Maid of Honour

Schitt's Creek 6x05 The Premiere

Schitt's Creek 6x06 The Wingman

Schitt's Creek 6x07 Moira Rosé

Schitt's Creek 6x08 The Presidential Suite

Schitt's Creek 6x09 Rebound

This show on the other hand is delivering a final season as good as its best work.  Stevey finding her way and Johnny expanding the business has been good.  David and Patrick continue to be an amazing couple.  Alexis and Ted's breakup was crushing, though.  They really wrote it in such a way that you just have to accept that it makes the most sense but it still sucks.  Why does David get a soul mate but not Alexis?  I am wondering if he will return eventually in the final 5 episodes.

Brooklyn 99 7x01 Manhunter

Brooklyn 99 7x02 Captain Kim

Brooklyn 99 7x03 Pimemento

Brooklyn 99 7x04 The Jimmy Jab Games II

Brooklyn 99 7x05 Debbie

Brooklyn 99 7x06 Trying

Another show that's been pretty consistent and never really had wildly differing quality from season to season.  Vanessa Bayer's two episodes were pretty funny as was the usual Pimento Ep.  Doug Judy this week!

But that WAS the original actor, he's been on the wall in the painting since the pilot episode.  Michael McKean was the recast as an older version, not the other way around.

And I'm pretty sure I recall that Simone DID have dialogue in the final episode.  Maybe you watched some edited-down, shorter re-cut of the final episode?  As aired in the US, it was much longer than a standard double-length episode.

Really? I didn't know that, on this case, that was a pretty good joke.

I don't think so, the version I watched, on Netflix, was 54 minutes long without commercials. I guess the creators had a lot to deal already and couldn't find a satisfying way to fit her.

The Outsider

Pretty decent 10-episode mini-series that just finished up on HBO.  First two episodes are very True-Detective-esque, with Ben Mendelsohn as a small town detective working on a child murder case where the primary suspect (Jason Bateman) seems to have inexplicably been out of state when it happened despite his DNA being on the body.  These early episodes don't have any supernatural elements and you wonder if Steven King wrote a more straight-forward story for a change.  But then episodes 3 and 4 bring in the show's biggest strength, Cynthia Erivo as private investigator Holly Gibney, and now the show really takes off as she goes around investigating and pretty much cracks the entire case, and it's supernatural Macguffin, by the end of the fourth episode.

At this point the show SERIOUSLY slows down and sort of drags its feet for episodes 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 until finally there's a pretty big and pretty satisfying conclusion in episode 10.  So, a long way to get there and a bit uneven in pacing throughout, but in the end, an overall satisfying little show with all the hallmarks of modern prestige television (great cinematography and acting).  Of course if supernatural stories aren't your thing, look elsewhere ... and despite having a solid wrap-up, don't be shocked if good ratings lead to a sequel season at some point.

Bajillion Dollar Properties

Hilarious show that ran for 4 seasons in the late 2010s that we recently discovered.  The cast of relatively unknown improvers excelled in a million funny scenarios as the show made fun of reality house-hunting shows as well as general workplace comedy.  These guys are the stars and carried every episode well enough on their own, but what's also fun is the absolute parade of guest stars (most often playing potential home buyers) like Weird Al, Patton Oswalt, Sarah Silverman, Nicole Byer, Jason Mantzoukas, Adam Scott,  Zach Galifianakis, Casey Wilson, Nick Kroll, Randall Park, Jack McBrayer, Ben Schwartz, David Koechner, Busy Philipps, June Diane Raphael, Lauren Lapkus, Adam Pally, the Sklar Brothers, and so many more that made things extra special.  Four seasons of 10 22-minute episodes each and nary a dud along the way, one of the the shows that made us laugh the most consistently in recent memory.  We were bummed when we finished it and haven't been able to find any comedy that scratches the same itch since.

I've been working my way through Star Trek TNG.  I'm currently in season 6.  I've been watching it along with listening to The Greatest Generation podcast.  They have fun watching the show and don't take it too seriously.  Gives me a good reason to rewatch the series again.

It’s streaming on Hulu, but you’ve already gone and bought the seasons! I did that recently for Scrubs, since each streaming service has changed the songs over the years due to licensing issues.

Picard, the one with Riker. I bet trekkies the world over blew their collective load like The Borg huddled around a porno starring their queen when Will turned around to see Jean Luc standing there.

The scenes between them (and Deanna Troi) were expectedly warm and the dialogue was nice enough, but you're talking strictly fan service only and other than checking in on these characters there was little other reason to have them participate. It was pensioners reuniting and that's it.

It's good though that they are unapologetically writing this for the original audiences of this franchise; not even bothering to appeal to the younger generation a la Discovery, and the cringe that came with it.

This is slow and retiring Star Trek, and it's not half bad really.

We are watching Fringe on IMDB TV, which is free with commercials, which is a bummer but Hulu has them too.

It's a much better show watching it for the second time, knowing where it goes.

Three episodes from the end, I recognize William Bell's voice on the videotape.

Just started S2E01. The one with Meghan Markle. The one where they changed locations to Vancouver, using The Irish Heather as a NYC bar.

Wowzers, that got me more excited for the new season than I thought it would! It looks really really good. I've been so hyped for the return of Saul I've kind of backburnered any thought about this. It's gonna be a fun end of winter with both these shows running

Almost done with my recap podcasts for the first 2 seasons.  I had forgotten a ton of details about what happened!  If I have time I might want to watch the final 3 episodes of season 2 some time before Sunday night.

Then again, it seems they are going in such a new direction for s3 it might not matter.

Can't wait!

Anybody here watch this week's Last Week Tonight With John Oliver?

They had to film in a a different location with no audience due to covid19.  It was REALLY weird having him deliver jokes in the completely normal way, but with no audience reaction at all.  Kind of unsettling.  Why couldn't the crew laugh or something?

All the talk shows have no audience these days.

Because I expect crew laughter would probably feel much more fake than audience laughter (even if the audience laughter may also be directed). And while it certainly was weird, I thought it served to emphasize the point of showing what extended global isolation means.

Oh yea it was definitely the right choice.  As weird as it was, it really drove the point home

A laugh track could have sufficed.

But that would defeat the point.  Doing the show with no laughter drove home the point that things are not normal and the situation should be taken seriously

It's a welcome respite from the boring overhyped dogooder Marvel movies but 1000% better made than the embarrassing "edgy" crap like Batman vs Superman dark and disturbing universe.

Avenue 5 (Season 1)

Despite it's terrible first episode and second episode, we stuck with it and the show did slowwwwwwwwly get better.  The pacing was at least pretty fast the entire time, so if any particular scene isn't working it's never long until you're onto the next one.  The show kind of mixes this pretty big, goofy ideas that could only work in a setting like this (like the ring of shit that ends up surrounding the ship or all the dead bodies) and just sort of general workplace comedy.  And that kind of sums up the season as a whole: Very unfocused, like the show spent the entire season finding it's footing and deciding what it is.  Hopefully season 2 is a BIG improvement.

Halfway through the penultimate season of The Office, the one which the fan consensus seems to agree was where the whole thing nosedived. But we are still loving it. Michael is long gone but this is still just so eminently watchable and often hilarious. Michael Scott WAS Dunder Mifflin, but the the rest of this wonderful and sprawling cast altogether assuredly very much still make up The Office. I'm going to be absolutely gutted once it's finished.

Out of interest, are there any US members here who don't actually like this show? Just curious.
