Not at all. It feels like a combination of American Horror Story and Hollywood (TV series).

I haven’t seen any of those, but it most certainly has a Refn vibe, with its sterile camerawork, torture porn horror, and use of random color filters. Reminded me a lot of The Neon Demon.

You just see something stylized and you think Refn. That's a very superficial way of making a connection. Really, it's a combination of AHS and Hollywood because Ratched is from the same guy and his shows doesn't resemble Refn's style at all. Refn is stylized but very dark, brutal and raw, while Ryan Murphy's style is more campy, queer and caricatural:

The only Refn movie I've seen is Drive and I didn't like it

It was like most of the third-year film student films I saw whilst in uni - some gorgeous shots and nice music placement, but bleeding with pretentious drivel.

Awful poser movie. Actually it's not awful, but a hollow exercise in style.

Referring to my recent viewing of the FX series 'Miss America': it's about the political struggles in the USA in the 1970s over the Equal Rights Amendment - a constitutional amendment that was supposed to firmly anchor equality between men and women. Cate Blanchett is Phyllis Schlafly, who made history as an opponent of equality between men and women in the 1970s, because she considers it a threat to the traditional family and an impending introduction of abortions and same-sex marriages and went into battle - from which she emerged victorious and loser alike. Towards the end of the series, she's characterized as liar, cheat, and a damn feminist too, because she actually was  one of the most independent women in America. It's this bunch of contradictions which makes the series interesting

She's pitted against women's rights frontrunners Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan, though I really consider it Cate Blanchett's series. She's not only shown as an evil, cold doer, but also a victim - in a big meeting with important men she's asked to take notes because she has the most beautiful handwriting. Her counterparts are Margo Martindale as Bella Abzug and Rose Byrne in the role of the glamorous journalist Gloria Steinem, Tracey Ullman as the slightly embittered author Betty Friedan. And they beautifully rise above political caricatures.

What you find in the debates re-enacted is an early sign of today's polarization and purely ideologically motivated cancel culture. And so it is no coincidence that Paul Manafort and Roger Stone appear as young Reagan election workers - two influential advisors who were instrumental in Donald Trump's election campaign.

I've started to watch Ratched.  Not bad.  It's a bit like American Horror Story, it have a cartoonish sordid ambiance... and the music is so... Herrmann-esque, so I wanted to know why.

Well, it seems that they intentionnaly picked some famous cues of Bernard Herrmann music from Cape Fear for this series.... and I just learned that Elmer Bernstein did that once in the past, to adapt the original score of Herrmann's Cape Fear for the Scorsese remake.

So... Herrmann's Cape Fear... for you, is it The original, the Bernstein remake or... Ratched?

This is exactly how it should be described. Perfect!

I couldn't stand it, personally. But plenty will lap it up no doubt. I think what bothers me though is that they'll also consider it canon.

Well, it's all I have right now (gave up on Away, The Exorcist and several others), so Ratched will have to do until all the episodes of The Boys S2 are available on Prime.

BTW, Episode 2 (Ice Pick) was already an improvement over the first one. I didn't know that Gwendolyn Briggs (Sex In The City) is such a good actress.

Ratched-Nurse-Ratched-and-Gwendolyn-Brig

There's some fantastic chemistry going on between these two.

THE OUTSIDER ep. One

Good start. Nice seeing fresh faces in the cast.

I hope they don't screw it up - like CASTLE ROCK

So, Alexcremers is into Ratched. How times have changed. And to think he used to tease people like Joey and Koray for what they watched. The bare-faced cheek!

Into: RATCHED

Not into : CHERNOBYL ( " It was o.k").

You decide.

You and Quint need to work on your comprehensive reading skills. 'Watching something' doesn't equal 'being into something'.

How times have changed? Not really, I watched most seasons of American Horror Story as well. It's watchable pulp for when there's nothing else on.

Weird, I've never watched a streaming series without being into it, because I just switch it off if I'm not. Anyone else do this? Bizarro Belgian behaviour I guess.

Also, it's 'reading comprehension', not "comprehensive reading". D'oh!

Anyone else watch Cobra Kai? Daniel is such a jerk these days!

Yes! Lighthearted and self-aware fun! Isn't it interesting that this time we have more sympathy for his arch-enemy AKA Johnny Lawrence?

I keep meaning to rewatch the movie with my kids just to set myself/us up with the show, which I've heard is surprisingly quite good. Never in a million years did we ask for a decent updated Karate Kid series though, right?

It's got a lot of swearing in it though. That wasn't in the old movies.

If that's a problem then you better cancel Netflix and subscribe to Disney +.

Yea

So far ...so good!

Ben Mendelsohn is Australian!

He seems to have " adopted" the voice of Harrison Ford to play an American.

Who is " him"?

Look...me, Thor and. Moradi are the only humans here who use their real names!😵

Your real name? I don't buy it. You love Jaws (Bruce) and Frank Marshall is your favorite film producer, hence 'Bruce Marshall'.

I thought he was the weakest link in the entire cast!  Everyone else did really good but he was kinda terrible in it

Travolta is a good Robert Shapiro and David Schwimmer, while distracting at first, turns out to be a good Robert Kardashian.
