You liked her bold choice to act without moving any facial muscles?

I'll let @Docteur Qui answer that.

I watched the whole series and enjoyed it quite a bit. I thought Gomez' acting was fine, and balanced particularly well paired with Martin Short's flamboyance. I'm very hot and cold with him, sometimes he's just too much. The trio had good chemistry and had a bit of a "three bears" dynamic, with Short (almost) overdoing it, Gomez underplaying things and Martin sitting snug in the middle. I know plenty of people who are very much like Gomez in real life, so her performance rang pretty true to me. Might be a millennial thing.

Steve Martin works so well in everything he does when on paper he shouldn't. He has next to no range and isn't a particularly good actor, but he has just the right amount of warmth and charisma. I can't quite put my finger on it! His physical comedy in the finale was quite funny too.

I thought Martin was terrific but his "acting" seemed a little strained in a few episodes. But he made up for it by being Steve Martin.

I binged Netflix's Sex Education this past week and a half.

First, the good: The acting is consistently good from everyone, the show treats its title topic including identity and attraction mostly seriously and informatively, a good cast of characters I grew fond of quickly who all sooner or later deepen by showing or discovering, and then dealing with different weaknesses, anxieties, backgrounds, or even strengths. I felt S1 was paced pretty well for us getting to know the characters, gave them and us space to breathe and just exist inbetween the more major plot points/beats/conflicts, I really like that.

And now the bad: by S2 we have so many characters and relationships and complications that there's a lot less time to dedicate to any of them. By S3 that doesn't change but they also pour a whole other bucket of change and conflicts on there, shaking up the world itself, making everyone get even less time and depth. They should have either held back or got more episodes to do the same thing. The dramedy aspect's unevenness doesn't help that either, often real emotional scenes are undercut by cutting away to something silly happening elsewhere with silly music and everything - that comes down to the editing, too, and also while we're at technical aspects the camerawork could be a real mess in later episodes, cutting away to a random high up extreme dutch angle for a second then back to more normal shots, weird framings and things like that - not that there aren't occasionally nice flowing long shots of characters/couples walking in a hallway and we're shifting between who we're following and hearing. Also a lot of the emotional beats get shoved into musical montages - or just left offscreen, I genuinely felt at times that I accidentally skipped an episode! S3 realises this at the end and makes the last episode into just a marathon of short rushed emotional resolutions with the sappy short sustained string note coming in. Also, the main character is mostly denied the resolution the show makes us want, dragging us along until it happens (classic technique), but that denial also makes him ever more of an ass, ever less likeable, which coupled with him getting ever less focus leads to eventual disinterest. Also I felt the world building was a bit messy - we're in the UK but it feels like an american high school, visually everything's in the 70s-90s but there are smartphones and chat apps and laptops and Kardashians and the porn mags are "vintage". I still look forward to S4, if largely because I'm interested in where the hell they can take it now.

Arcane: League Of Legends

This is not just one of the best animated shows I have ever seen, but some of the best television I have ever seen.

To start with the animation. The style of the animation is mindblowing and is something I have never seen before. It's really cool.

The plot is very rich with different story points that all tie together. And it ends on a amazing cliffhanger for Season 2.

The characters are across the board fantastic.

The music is also very strong!

I still think it's a shame not a lot of adult animated series are watched by a wider audience. Think Castlevania, Blood Of Zeus & Invincible. I for one, love them. But hope a lot of people see this, it's so so good.

Dave

Pretty funny comedy on FX (or Hulu, how we watched it) about a white jewish guy in his late 20s trying to make it as a rapper in LA.

The first season was more of a straightforward comedy, and acts as an extended "origin story" of getting his first record deal, as through the season he meets who will become his hype man, his long-time friend provides his beats, his roommate becomes his manager, his relationship with his girlfriend inspires his best songs, her roommate becomes his graphic designer, etc.  At times it feels very Curb Your Enthusiam-esque, with bits about societal norms and lots of lunches in LA restaurants and such, but this similarity isn't present the whole season.

The second season transitions to being one of those shows that is ostensibly a comedy, but really becomes more of a drama/comedy blend, with more more emotional and gut-punch storylines.  The best episode of the whole show is in this season, an episode involving pop star Doja Cat and showing how much harder she has to work compared to Dave to get to the same ends, and his extreme and self-sabotaging neurotic nature really shines.  Overall the season was uneven, with each episode having a wildly different tone and pace than the next for a while, but it all kind of comes together in the final moments.

It hasn't been renewed for a third season yet, but the 2 existing seasons tell a pretty effective story if it never gets a third.

The latest Curb episode (season 11 ep 5) is an absolute hoot. By far the best of the season so far – great, natural dialogue and fantastic comeuppances. None of the stilted and staged feel some of the recent episodes had.

Ep 4?  We just watched Ep 5 earlier tonight.  The one with Juiie Bowen and the Japanese restaurant.  Are you talking about that one, or Ep 4, the one with Woody Harrelson and the watermelon?

Can't believe the season's half over!

Agreed. Haven’t watched the last episode yet, but everything so far feels like it’s just sort of recycling the season 2 arc with some decent gags here and there.

I finished Arcane. It was... Hm. It's undeniably gorgeous. It looks like production paintings brought to life. The character animation is astonishing.

The first three episodes were so amazing and compelling. Then as the show went on I cared less and less.

Spoiler

Ending it on such a nihilistic note, you just throw your hand up and say "What the hell was that for?!?"

After years of trying to watch the original cartoon and only getting a few episodes in, I started watching the live action. I got three episodes in and I decided to catch up with the original. Now I'm about half way through the original.

They're both worthwhile. I can see why they decided to do the live action. Funny thing is the cartoon was striving to be more realistic while the live action is trying to feel more like a cartoon. Well, at least they both have good spaceships.

Flipped Quibi show | Apartment Therapy

Flipped

Another Quibi show that can now be seen for free on The Roku Channel.  This one is really funny - all the Quibi material we've checked out so far has been really good!

Will Forte and Kaitlin Olson (Always Sunny) star as two down-on-their-luck wannabe home renovating cable TV stars, who stumble into a hoard of drug cartel cash during their first renovation - and the plot keeps going through different machinations from there for its short season of 11 ten-minute episodes.  Forte and Olson are consistently great, but the whole thing is really elevated greatly by the supporting cast, including a wonderful silly turn from Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria, cameos from Jerry O'Connel and Rebecca Romijn, and a scene-stealing newcomer in Arturo Castro, who just kills it.

Really funny, and a short investment!

Agreed on pretty much all counts!

I didn't expect much, and it was an excellent surprise. Most impressive were the animation, both in a dynamic camera movements and in minute facial expressions, and the music, a standout for me in 2021 (though admitedly I haven't listened to much).

Compared to the 2 other series you mention that I've seen, Castlevania and Blood of Zeus, I would put Arcane above them, no doubt!

Is this show exclusively for League of Legends fans? Like, you gotta have at least some knowledge of the game's lore if you want to understand the plot?

My best friend loves this game, and I've seen him playing a few times, but I didn't understand anything about the lore.

No, you don't. I didn't. The series is an origin story of some sorts for the characters from the game. But the series explains everything you need to know and doesn't skip things you're 'supposed' to know from the games

Miracle Workers

This is a really funny show on - of all places - TBS!  The first 2 seasons can also be seen on HBO Max, where the third will probably end up eventually as well.

It's a seasonal anthology show, where each season is its own story and universe that has no connections at all to the other seasons (not even any easter eggs that I saw), but the same cast members are used.

Miracle Workers (TV Series 2019– ) - IMDb

In Season 1, Heaven is depicted as a corporate office building type of thing, with about an 80s level of technology.  Steve Buscemi plays God, and Daniel Radcliffe and Geraldine Viswanathan play angels who end up making a deal with him to prevent the Earth's destruction if they can get two people on earth who like each other (Jon Bass and Sasha Compère), as they seem to be failing at doing so without divine intervention.  Karan Soni and Lolly Adefope play other workers in the heaven office situation.  It's wonderfully irreverent and clever and funny.

Watch Miracle Workers Season 2 | Prime Video

Season 2 is probably the best season; It's now set in England in the Middle Ages / Dark Ages, where Buscemi and Viswanathan and Bass are the Shitshoveler family, Radcliffe is the meager Prince to the hard-ass King (played wonderfully by Peter Serafinowicz), Soni is a Lord working under the King, and Adefope is nun.  Unlike season 1 which was much more serialized, in this season they do more one-off episodes that don't move forward any kind of overarcing plot, and that was a nice improvement.  As funny as Radcliffe got to be in season 1, he gets to display his comedic chops a lot further here, and does really well with it.  Buscemi is very funny as well.

Miracle Workers (TV Series 2019– ) - IMDb

Now we're in the mid 1800s in the USA, following a village trying to make it to Oregon to start a new life.  Radcliffe does his best work yet as a Reverend, Viswanathan is now married to Bass and he's hilarious as the guy who thinks he's too good and rich to do anything to help with the travels, Soni is a hilarious gunslinger / marshal trying to capture Buscemi, who plays "Benny The Teen" Unfortunately you could tell they had budget and other limitations due to covid, but they sort of lean into the low budget special effects at times which mostly makes up for it.  Not as consistently funny as season 2, but probably the best premise.

And it's been renewed for season 4!  Well worth checking out!  Each season is only ten 20-minute episodes.  Actually, looks like the first season was only 7 episodes!

Alright, that goes straight on the list (of stuff I probably won't get to see until it ends up on Netflix in 10 years or I download it somewhere, unless there's a physical release). I don't think I've seen anything Radcliffe has done aside from Potter, but I love that he's consistently doing all this weird shit.

I was genuinely surprised by how funny Daniel Radcliffe is in this show!  He never had an opportunity to do anything close to this in the decade he spent playing Harry Potter, and I wouldn't even say anything his acting was particularly remarkable there.  But he full on commits to doing every increasingly absurd thing they come up with for his characters in this show to do, especially a wild musical number in the third season.

Buscemi is really funny too, but I knew he could be from SNL and 30 Rock and such.  But they really write his characters to take full advantage of the ways in which he is funny, so its great.  Karan Soni I only remembered as the cab driver from Deadpool, but I'd say he's the breakout star here, with his unique way of delivering lines and again the writers writing to his strengths as each season goes on - the lazy gunslinger in season 3 was perfect for him.

And on top of everything else, Geraldine Viswanathan (who I knew from Blockers) is quite easy on the eyes!

Yeah B99 had a steady decline over the last few seasons. I used to laugh out loud a few times a minute in the early episodes, but barely chuckle anymore. It started getting a bit too self-referential (and self-reverent) in its final years. Still a decent run though.

Popped on Squid Game during the week after some peer influence.

Meh. Watching the first few tasks was sort of fun and engaging, but I very quickly lost interest in the character stories. The problem also is that at least early on there are no stakes because you know they're not going to kill off main characters.

I'm happy most others seem to have enjoyed it, but in my book this will go down as the usual overrated, overhyped mush.

Well I was more referring to early on when they're unlikely to be killing characters off who are still under establishment.

But I also hadn't really picked up on the '1 contestant' thing properly. It wasn't engaging me enough overall.

Mapleworth Murders

This is without a doubt one of the best and funniest television shows I've seen in years.  I had never even heard of it until we had a banner ad on our Roku homescreen showing that JB Smoove had won an Emmy for it, and when I saw what it was about I instantly knew it would be something my wife and I would enjoy, and I was so right!

This is another Quibi show - it turns out that service while having the worst idea in the history of apps, was full of amazing original content, and this might be the best of the bunch!  It's 12 10 minute episodes, but essentially it's more like 4 standard 30 minute episodes where each of those is chopped up into 3 parts.  So if you watch I recommend just watching 3 in a row at a time.

It's sort of a parody of Murder She Wrote, which is a show I've never seen so certainly isn't necessary to enjoy at all.  Basically its a comedy and a murder mystery solving show in one, where Ms. Mapleworth (Paula Pell) and her niece (Hayley Magnus) end up solving yet another murder in their small town every week, with John Luttz and JB Smoove as the local cops they are always clashing with.

Along the way are cameos or bit parts from a who's who of tons of great comedians working today - Fred Armisen! Ike Barinholtz! NIcole Byer! D'arcy Carden! Terry Crews! Tina Fey! Drew Tarver! Jack McBraryer! Tim Meadows! Annie Mumolo! Patton Oswalt! Chris Parnell! Maya Rudolph! Andy Samberg! Horatio Sanz! Wanda Sykes!

It's such a shame this was launched on such a crap service because this deserves to be a continuing show on HBO something like that (it would fit right in there).  Absolutely hilarious and we'll be sure to watch again!

You can find it on the Roku Channel now that Quibi is dead

Squid Game: Minimalist Chic and Spaces of Oppression | ArchDaily

Squid Game

We enjoyed this, well, basically miniseries, although it sounds lie Netflix is turning it into an ongoing show (unfortunately).  It's definitely a bit on the dark and depressing side, since every main character except one will die a gruesome death, but it was well crafted.  Every episode was interesting and compelling and left you wanting to know what will happen next.  I enjoyed the plot with the infiltrating cop as much as the contestants.

After the game is over, all the wrap-up stuff in the final episode kind of makes or breaks the show I think, or at least determines for you whether it's something special, or merely just a good watch.  I kinda feel a little bit of both, like the ending had more going on than I would have expected, and some interesting parts, but not enough to really make me think I saw anything revolutionary here.  Hopefully this and Parasite lead to more and more South Korean content getting international exposure!

It's on Netflix.

Succession Season 3

One of the things this show does best is having incredibly good season finales that elevate the season as a whole more so than most show's season finale's do, and this season is no exception.  At various times throughout this season I felt like the show was perhaps past its prime, or perhaps recycling story threads a bit too much, or just wasn't being very compelling and almost seemed to be spinning its wheels.  All of those thoughts are wiped out after last night's terrific finale.  I actually got up off the couch and watched the final 10 minutes or so while standing up!

The best acting of the entire season happens in this episode, and by so many of its cast!  Brian Cox was fantastic in his final scene as well as the earlier scene with Skarsgård, Nicholas Braun and Mathew McFadyen were hilarious and devilish in their big scene together, Kieran Culkin had his best episode ever, especially everything towards the end, Sarah Snook was so good talking to her dad, then her mom, then Tom, and Jeremy Strong was absolutely amazing in his big scene.  Everytime the show spends time having the three main siblings together for an extended scene is always the best scenes and this was the best of all of them.

This is a show where each new season continues to re-enforce that it's one of the best shows being made right now.  This season is going to win a ton of Emmy's next year, and deservedly so.

Anyone wanna talk spoilers?

Spoiler

Logan deciding to sell Waystar Royco to Skarsgård is kind of interesting, seemed like he placed being in charge of everything more than total wealth but I guess not.

Greg's dating life is absolutely hilarious.  His "who needs a soul" line was amazing, anybody who thought Greg was a good guy this whole time has not been paying attention

Kendall confessing about the waiter's death to Shiv and Roman was very well done.  What an arc he had this year, from convincing himself he's better than Logan and that he's a good guy, to being utterly dismantled and broken down, only to get revived again with his siblings on his side as a force against Logan.  Back to the death, the way both siblings played it off as not a big deal almost seemed to be what he needed to hear.  I think Logan played a role in him convincing himself he was a murderer, when he's not actually.  He is responsible for that waiter's death, and for covering it up, and very much did bad things, but it's like his father added extra weight to the death to keep Kendall down and under his thumb, and it worked, until this scene.

Tom's betrayal was fucking amazing and perfect!  His line "what has anyone in this family ever done for you" to Greg was extremely poignant and really about himself.  From Shiv requesting an open marriage on their wedding day, to seemingly wanting him to go to jail then being disappointed he's not, to finally confessing she doesn't really love him...... Of course he'd go to Logan for his own gains after she made the mistake of telling him their plan.  What an amazing power move.  The pat on the back Logan gives him when he shows up, and then Snook's acting when she realizes what he did was >chef's kiss<.  I wonder when the other siblings will find out it was Tom that told Logan.  Culkin's acting talking to Gerri about it and her utterly dismissing him was amazing too.

I did have one thought in retrospect after pondering on the episode though: Was Tom's betrayal even necessary?  The way I understand things, Caroline got something in the divorce that guaranteed the 3 kids would have a supermajority override, but when Tom told Logan what they were planning, Logan convinced Caroline to give that power back (presumably for a dumptruck of money).  So when the kids show up, Logan's prepared and drops the bomb on them that he won in that way.  All good.  But, my retrospective thought was: say Tom had not informed Logan of this.  Couldn't he have still kicked the kids out of the room, and then called Caroline and just done the same deal?  I don't see how Tom informing him early actually mattered - though of course, it obviously made for way better TV this way!!

Final thought - I LOVE how one of the posters dropped before the season started had the siblings on one side and Tom and Greg alone with Logan on the other.  AMAZING

Lost in Space.

Wonderful series. Suffered a tiny bit from Covid in the last episodes. But a satisfying end. It has what I call the "Space: 1999 Disconnect". It's so pretty you expect the science and physics to follow. But it's less 2001 and more... Well, Lost in Space.

The Expanse.

Here we go. The "last" season. (In quotes because I'm pretty sure it's going to spin off to another series with a different cast that will finish the last three books.) So far so good.

Doctor Who.

I loved it. So there. ;)

Hawkeye.

This is so much fun. I loved all the other Marvel TV shows this year, but this is just great. I'm having so much fun just watching the leads.

Once Upon a Time.

This is what we've settled on for our family watch. It's not bad. It's not fantastic but it's not bad.

Whew! I'm watching a lot of shows all of a sudden!

Brilliant finale! I think the cast was at the top of their game in this whole season, though I too had my doubts about where it was going, especially with the way they were handling Kendall, but boy did it pay off. Really nailing that blend of absurd comedy and Shakespearan drama.

Also, the whole bit about Logan's little swimmers is hilarious.

Britell's score was also quite good, especially compared to a more bland/repetitive second season.

I've also been rewatching Curb lately. Was at the ninth season, which I thought was actually quite hilarious. Shame the new season feels so tired and limp in comparison.

Hilarious?  I dunno if I'd go that far about that subplot, which was barely a subplot, and more like a short bit of jokes.  Shakespearan drama is a good way to describe it, almost felt Godfather-esque at the end, too.

I can honestly say while watching the show I never really notice the score, at least as far as telling what's new or a previous cue reused.  This particular episode I can't even remember what type of music was even used in any scene.  Which is I guess the point of film music, you're not supposed to notice it
