What is the last Television series you watched?

And it doesn't make John Carter a 2011 score either.

You just go by the date the film was first released. This is why we have standards!

Fuck standards! Anarchy at JWFAN! ;)

I don't go by film's release, because films don't matter to me as much as music written for them. To be perfectly honest, for me (film) music is in a way a completely separate form of orchestral expression and I mostly enjoy it as such. Its role in the film is one thing (and important one), but, frankly, quite secondary for me. Otherwise I wouldn't buy scores on CD's. Much of the classical music was written for some church mass service, or as an underscore a dinner of a royal family. I like The Rite of Spring but I've never seen the performance. Most of them were written for some sort of occasion and by performing them at will in a concert hall you lose that context. I wouldn't be able to enjoy film music in films. Take Jerry Goldsmith for example, I just have no desire to watch most of the films he's done - the CD gives me all the information and pleasure I need. If it's good music, then I frankly don't care what has it been created for.

Except when performed in concert halls, those pieces have usually been revised to suit that form, in which case it loses the burden of the film it was attached to. In fact, its not like you're listening to The Rite of Spring exactly as first heard in the theatre. You're hearing a slightly revised version by Stravinsky, with tweaks that were made with the concert hall in mind.

But with film scores, you have all those cues that you'd never hear in a concert hall because they're meant to serve the film alone. The film drives the purpose of the music.

It's like Memoirs of a Geisha. The concert suite sounds radically different from the score in parts (and a lot more interesting too, which is quite the feat for an already great score!) to suit the concert hall setting.

Having said that, I usually don't think of the film when listening to film scores. I'm just like you, ideally I'd like the score to stand on its own as an independent form of musical composition and storytelling. Most scores these days fail to accomplish this however, which might explain my growing disinterest in modern scores.

I largely agree with you, I was just playing the devils advocate there. ;)

Yes, but in terms of editing, film music do the same thing with albums. It's meant to be listened to this way.

My point is... if the music is good, it can transcend the original purpose.

All of that is perfectly fine and well and good, but it doesn't make Jack Reacher or Life Of Pi 2013 scores :)

The great thing about music is that it has an inherent duality. It's purely an auditory art, but it can be attached to a visual stimulus for a greater or lesser effect.

Film music is always meant to work in conjunction with a film, but the nature of it allows it to also work away from the image. We can provide our own images to it. With that being said, I discovered film scores through their films. I'll always be a fan of the movie first and judge the music on its effectiveness on screen. Then I'll evaluate how it holds up as a listening experience. It's rare for me to really get into the music for something I haven't seen, though.

Joey you haven't told us your thoughts on the end of Under the dome season 1. I posted mine yesterday or the day before

it ended, it was a good cliffhanger ending but now we have to wait until June. CBS will hype the hell out of it and people will return in droves.

I was satisfied with the show. I had long since given up any connection to the novel.

clearly I liked it better than you.

I think CBS should not have extended it over two summers, god forbid 3 if the ratings hold up.

Hopefully Hostages won't go beyond it's 15 episode arc. That is a lesson to be learned.

it's only a 13 episode season, so it's like American Horror Story in that respect.

So anyway what's wrong with Sons of Anarchy? I keep getting pestered to watch it by my brother and a mate, I've had the first season blu loaned to me for months, but still haven't gotten around to it. I'm getting sick of their raving!

He was suitably snide as the HIGNFY quiz master, and probably shouldn't have been dismissed, but it survives just fine without him and the move has even provided some classic episodes in the years after. The William Shatner hosted one springs to mind.

Edit: turns out Ian Hislop agrees: http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2013-10-04/have-i-got-news-for-yous-ian-hislop-william-shatner-was-my-favourite-guest-host

The show starts a new series tonight btw.

Never seen Sons of Anarchy, Justified, or Hell on Wheels, but many people recommend them. Eh, maybe some day I will check them out.

Brooklyn 99 1x01 Pilot

Pretty funny! Has the problems a lot of pilots have, with attemping to cram in many character introductions all at once, plus tell some sort of story. The romance between Joe Lo Truglio and Rosa was good, the romance between Andy Samberg and Amy not so much. Terry Crews was really funny as the sargeant, and Andre Braugher is just great as everyone's boss. I wonder if Joel McKinnon Miller (Big Love) showing up in the background but having no lines were reshoots, and he's a more feature character in the rest of the season?

Modern Family 5x02 First Days

Not much to say about this show as mentioned before, it's just consistently funny every week. Justin Kirk (Weeds) was good as Mitch's new boss (it was quite creepy when he was hitting on Haley!). The Gloria/Phil, Claire/Jay, and Cam storylines were pretty predictable, but fine.

Mindy Project 2x02 The Other Doctor L

Man, James Franco is just great on this show! Too bad his arc is over. The basketball scenes were funny.

Saturday Night Live 39x01 Tina Fey / Arcade Fire

Funny! Tina Fey is always great, though she actually didn't get a WHOLE lot of chance to shine here. None of the six (Six!) new castmembers were yet, but I'm willing to give them all a chance. This was my first time seeing Arcade Fire perform and man, are they weird! I love Reflektor, but this performance of it wasn't that good for some reason. Best sketch was "New Cast Member or Arcade Fire member"

The League 5x04 Rafi and Dirty Randy

This was easily the worst episode of The League ever. Rafi can be funny but only in small doses, and it was a bad idea to give him and Dirty Randy an entire episode (Peter, Kevin, Andre and Jenny only appear briefly, and this is now the second episode in a row where Ruxin doesn't appear at all - maybe he's busy with Kroll Show?). Seriously, this was bad, with too much improv and a strange ending. The whole episode felt like a bad dream sequence. Season 4 of The League was the best yet, but season 5 is fairly weak so far. Maybe because all the leads are expotentially busier now than they were when the show started?

Neighbors 2x02 September Fools

Funny stuff all around. This is really the hidden gem on tv right now, quietly putting out funny and interesting shows every week.

2 Broke Girls 3x02 And The Kickstarter

Funny as usual. Too much cell phone stuff though. I don't think Max Black would be into them that much. Max telling Caroline she loves her was handled perfectly, and a really sweet moment. Funny tag when she leaves to get punched in the face.

It's funny and clever. Mixes social commentary with absurd sci-fi humor.

I remember the show, but I haven't seen it since I was a kid. If it was was making social commentary I'm sure I wasn't aware at the time.
