Don't forget the paintball episodes!

Jeff looks totally different in the first 2 episodes of Season 5 for sure! Go to a scene with a closeup of his face, then compare that to any closeup from seasons 1-4. it's like he's caked in makeup now.

Season 2 was the funniest of the show, with the best concept episode. But I felt season 3 was the most emotionally sincere of the bunch. Really pushed the emotional boundaries of all the characters, raising some major questions and ending in a touching way.

Season 4...let's not go there.

Season 5 had a rocky start, but its getting on its feet. The problem is its just going to be 13 episodes, and it's already at the disadvantage of having to do a lot of "explaining" (Pierce and Troy's departure, the stuff done in season 4), which sucks for Hartmon. If they get another season, I hope its a full set of 20+ episodes.

And for the skeptics, I hope you all realize the show is intentionally ridiculous when it means to be.

Is SMG still gorgeous?

um No. Was she ever? She was lousy when she played Silver, Erica Kane's sister on All My Children. She was lousy on Buffy, thank goodness for most of the rest of the cast.

The Neighbors 2x12 Fear and Loving in New Jersey

Oh my, poor Amber. I hope she figures her shit out.

2 Broke Girls 3x14 And The Dumpster Sex

What an odd episode. Not really buying the Max/Deek thing. Their chemistry was better (though not by much) when they were just friends. Them finally getting together didn't really work. Again with more Sophie not liking Caroline. Was that invented in the last episode just to pay off in this one?

Parks and Recreation 6x11 New Beginnings

Loved the bit where Ron is hiding bacon in the ceiling above his desk!! Other than that, not much to write home about. The writers seem to have no idea what to do with Leslie next. It's clear she has no reason to be in the Parks Department any more. Not to mention that Andy, Tom, and April are all basically sucessful now and no longer slackers. This season needs more Lucy Lawless. Why have Ron get married if she isn't even going to be on the show much?

Saturday Night Live 39x12 Jonah Hill / Bastille

Not bad, Jonah Hill wisely wasn't too crazy and also kinda disappeared for a while in the middle of the episode. The Her trailer parody with Michael Cera was pretty funny. Cecily's impersonation of a drunk Scottish fish was great.

Yeah, one of the things that struck me about the show early on was how it was able to balance off-kilter storylines and meta humor with emotional sincerity. The "Somewhere Out There" sing-along in Season 1, with Chang reuniting with his wife, Shirley making it through her speech, and Abed/Troy finding Fievel was what initially won me over to the show. It shouldn't have worked (I mean really shouldn't have worked) but it did for me.

She fugly. And that's just on the inside. No one buys that she's William's daughter cause she's aged poorly.

Oh I'm kidding she's as pretty as Mary Ann. Except with a navel.

I love all the songs without words. They are really okay. But the word ones are better and best.

And I quote, a comment from a YouTube video of Ottman's Superman Returns score.

"I like John William's Superman march, but it was more lighthearted and jumpy. I like Hans Zimmer's score better because it was more darker and epic."

Now I liked what Zimmer did. But this is not exactly the kind of advocacy the score needs.

Tonight is the series finale for American Horror Story Coven. Who will become the new Supreme witch?

I said series because each season is a series unto itself. MURDER HOUSE, ASYLUM, this year's COVEN. Next season takes place in 1950 and Jessica Lange will speak with a German accent. Hmm what major event shaped 1950?

Your birthdate?

I'm not that old fooool. And my life has not been entertaining horror material. At least you correctly realized my birth was a major event.

McCarthyism, the cold war, german immigrant Klaus fuchs convicted of spying for the russians

Korean war starts, the vietnam wars starts but that was a french problem not an American issue at the time.

Finished Firefly. According to Amazon the episodes as listed actually aired at seemingly random times. Did FOX air the season out of order?

Also, how does Serenity fit into the timeline of the show? Does it wrap up character arcs or is it essentially another episode?

Yes

It's awesome. It basically takes the storyline they would have spread out over the next one or two seasons and condenses it all into one 2 hour movie, while wrapping up every character as well. You should absolutely watch it.

Sounds good. A shame it ended so soon since it was starting to get consistently great in the last few episodes.

I wonder why Greg Edmonson didn't score the movie.

I think Universal wanted someone recognizable to score the film, so they got David Newman. Originally, Joss talked with Carter Burwell about scoring Serenity, but their ideas didn't mesh -- so Burwell gracefully exited. (I don't know why Joss didn't ask Edmunson at all.)

Newman's Serenity score is stylistically similar to the TV show -- and there's a nice guitar performance of the original TV show's theme during the end credits. And yes, the film itself is awesome.

A shame, he was really fond of the show and took it hard when it got cancelled (per his FMM interview). It's like a wonderfully folksy western precursor to his Uncharted scores. Bought the score album along with Serenity on blu.

Watched season 1 of Sherlock. Nothing amazing about it, most British shows are crime dramas of sorts anyway. The music seems to rip-off Zimmer's (and poorly). But it's very watchable and Benedict Cumberbatch is very likeable in the role. Much better than that Robert Downey Jr crap. Onto season 2.

If you didn't love season 1 it's unlikely you'll like seasons 2 or 3 significantly more. But I do think Season 2 was strong than Season 1 for sure.

The big cimbalon theme was certainly inspired by Sherlock. But I prefer it to Zimmer's.

Starting with season 2 they did start to ramp up the pacing a lot more. Season one feels quite relaxed compared it it.

I said I enjoyed it. It's not amazing television like some other shows, but still engaging enough. And Cumberbatch alone makes it worthwhile.

I'll rephrase that a bit: It's not that the music is bad as written, but the fact it was "inspired" bothers me.

Bothers is a strong word (I'm not articulating anythning clearly tonight, sorry). Disappointing, maybe. I'd like to hear something else. Zimmer's take is quite unique, no matter how you slice it.

I think if you were to listen to the Season 1 OST, the "zimmer-ish" theme would not be playing as often as you'd expect. It's just one element of the sound pallate used for scoring the show. It's just the one that stands out the most when watching the show for the first time.
