Which do you prefer, his older or newer work? It isn't all that difficult to choose really and its up to you what you consider to be 'older' and 'newer' material.

Either way, I created this poll for entertainment purposes, so please see it as just that and kindly refrain from jumping down my throat if you dislike it.

Older <----I'm quite possibly a dribbling idiot who has no understanding of what music REALLY is.

Newer <----Unlike the heathens above, I TRULY UNDERSTAND music therefore I am right.

If I had to choose, I'd pick his older stuff. A lot of his classics are classics for good reason, and a lot of his stuff from back in the day is great even if it isn't well-known. But I regularly enjoy his newer works, too, which is why I'm glad that I don't have to choose in real life. =)

I personally would put the dividing line around the start of the 90s, but this whole thing is a simplification, of course. He's gone through a lot of different but related styles, and each score is different anyway, with some being reminiscent of older works and others foreshadowing later techniques and tendencies.

When does the "old stuff" period end when does the "new stuff" period begin?

For me the new era begins with Schindler's List, but others may disagree.

Let's say his "real" career started in 1975. His last score was in 2008. That's a period of 33 years.

So, the cutoff point should be around 1991.

Anyway, I'm one of the few ones who picks his new period.

I don't think I can vote unless it's specified where the older period ends and the newer begins

old stuff is for winners, newer stuff is for ************s.

I'm joking of course, really I am

Easily the older stuff. If Williams or any other composer today put out something in 2009similar to Star Wars or something like Raiders, Superman, or E.T., we'd all be celebrating the "Return of Film Music".

I think there is 1962-1975, 1976-1986, 1987-1994, 1995-2009.

I prefer his stuff after 1987.

IMO this best period is 1975-1984. It's almost hard to believe that in less than a decade he gave us Jaws, Jaws 2, Star Wars, Empire, Jedi, Dracula, The Fury, Raiders, Temple, Superman, Close Encounters, E.T.

If I had to choose it would be his older stuff. There are just too many masterpieces during that time period to pass up. But I enjoy pretty much all of the man's work on some level.

The young one has become wise.

Yes, I've always been with KM on that one too. The only scores from that period that I really love are Last Crusade, Hook, and Schindler's List. JP too, though that's merely good IMO.

1886-1998

Oh come on, John Williams may be a bit aging, but he is not that old.... (And I love The Lost World: Jurassic Park, by the way)

As for the Thread's question: I cannot choose, and I thusly find myself in a situation similar to that of Lamar Burgess', with the same solution: suicide.

(Currently listening to "Psychic Truth and Finale", and loving it)

You mean The Last Crusade (or TLC)?

I do, but that comment was a bit random. TLC and the 181986-1998 period were being discussed.

Oh yeah.

Although I like many scores from that period (some like Hook are among my top favorites) I would have to agree with KM as well, but I wouldn't call that time frame 'mediocre'. There are certainly many gems to be had, there just aren't as many as the 80's or 2000's.

Oh right, I forgot about Hook. Apparently , Empire of the Sun is great, but I have yet to listen to that one.

It really, really is.

I'll be the third to quote this in agreement.

1986-1998 = The Mediocre Years (except Hook and JP)

I'd put Home Alone and Far and Away right up there too.

I'm getting into JFK more. It's too bad half the OST is source cues.

There is not much more score beyond what is on the OST. A few significant cues. Half of the source cues on that album are expendable but the other half complements the listening experience in my opinion. El Watusi is of course the worst diegetic/source cue on any JW album.

Oh and to answer your question Quint, I can't really choose between old and new as they are both equal to my ears in different ways.

Nor I myself

It is good that a man can get along with himself like that. Most terrific.
