The Godfather Pt III Movie Question

This is a question about the movie which I have been wanting to ask for years.

At the end of the film Michael survives an assassination attempt on the steps of the theatre but the assassin misses Michael and Mary is shot instead. But years later I got thinking. What if Michael wasn't the real target? What if Mary was the intended target?

Does anyone else believe Michael was never the intended target?

No. Doesn't the hitman have to wait until they're outside because Michael leaves his box during the opera?

They all know Michael is too smart to put himself in a situation where HE can be killed. So since they can't kill him they can destroy him by killing the person whom he loves the most, Mary. He says he's spent his life protecting his family and when he loses Mary Michael is in effect dead from then on.

That's just my take on it.

They try to kill him several times in the film, starting at the meeting where the helicopter shoots up the place.

Michael was no longer Don, so he felt safe and besides, Vinny and the body guards were on patrol (such as they were).

I'm still trying to figure out what happened to all of Vito's other grandchildren and why did they take the family over from Michael. Sonny had some legitimate children and so did Connie. Connie let her own children be passed over? Makes no sense, but many things in that movie make no sense.

I always took it that the legit Corleone kids weren't to be involved after Michael...

And that's the problem with Godfather III - there's too much from the previous two movies you have to divorce for Godfather III to make sense.
