ChuckM 1
Bob Jones University holds a commencement concert at the end of every school year. They are always done very well, and often have a good selection of music, but I got a bit of an extra surprise this year. The concert started off with Summon the Heroes! That was followed by selections from Copland's "Rodeo." Then we heard more John Williams with The Cowboys Overture! Some other highlights included selections from "West Side Story," and a piece I've never heard before by Howard Hanson called Symphony No. 2 "Romantic" which I am now 99% sure was an inspiration for the E.T. score.Overall it was an excellent concert and a great way to finish up the semester! Can you believe this is actually the first time I've had a chance to hear anything by Williams live in concert?

It's heard over the finale and credits. And yes, it has frequently been mentioned as an influence on E.T..
ChuckM 1
Ah, I guess I would have heard it then, but I didn't recognize it.

ChuckM 1
I wouldn't say the similarities in the pieces make E.T. a hack so much as an homage.

artyjeffrey 20
It took me until I was 33 years old before I heard JW's music in concert. I was fortunate enough to actual see him conducting then. Pretty sad though, considering that I live in California! Where's Hollywood?Jeff-- who just found a pedestrian, three-page article on Jerry Goldsmith in an old 1981 issue of Starlog magazine, and has posted it on his blog. I've been fortunate enough to see that twice.I played the Romantic with my college orchestra. Extraordinary and brilliant work.
