What Is The Last Film You Watched?

I forgot to mention that I watched The Peacemaker a couple days ago. Good action flick with an awesome score.

The Thin Red Line

One of my favorites of all time. Terrence Malick's best film, with Zimmer's best score. Incredibly powerful and haunting.

Cast Away. A great film and one of the few that really work practically without any score. Really a fantastic performance by Hanks. I completely agree with Leonard Maltin: "No narration, little music, just great moviemaking."

The music that is there is beautiful though, and works incredibly well in the movie. Maybe my favorite Silvestri score.

I have very, very bad memories of that movie. Possibly the worst time I've spent in a theater, other than Scary Movie 2. Though I was in my late teens, I might appreciate it more now. Might.

I didn't like it either and I've seen it twice! I always wondered what Malick was adding to what we already knew. Perhaps I need to watch it three times. Perhaps I was concentrating too much on the story and not enough on the filmmaker's 'voice'. After all, I also needed three viewings before I liked Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket.

Saw King Kong, (2005) watched the extended version and enjoyed it, still love the Central Park sequence.

There is an.....extended version of the already bloated beyond comprehension original?

I think it's the best portrayal of war, except perhaps for Saving Private Ryan. No one can match music, images, and narration like Malick.

I wouldn't suffer a third time, Alex, I don't know how you made it to two. All I can remember is a bunch of insanely boring images barely strung together with some invisible "plot". I'd rather watch Saving Private Ryan, The Bridge on the River Kwai, and especially Patton any day.

Once was enough for me.

District 9. This was pretty good. Near the end it started to become a cheesy action film. "You have to go, I'll hold them off!" "No, we must stick together!" Blegh. Didn't like the score. The most important aspect of this film was that it made the aliens truly sympathetic creatures.

Coppola can.

I got to the end of BSG. To quote the internet, "WTF". Maybe I missed something, but it seemed to take a right turn from where it was going before. It probably doesn't help that I've never had any interest/sympathy for Roslin or Starbuck as I've found them thoroughly unlikeable characters (and actors). The "epilogue" was terrible, so on the nose when the rest of the show seemed to have a little restraint.

Overall, the series was pretty great for most of the time, bar a few characters/actors I didn't get on with. I would have liked for a different - maybe more traditional - approach to the score, as I felt it didn't really work in conveying emotion to the point where it affected me. So yeah, A for 80% of the series, C- for the rest and finale.

Conan the Barbarian.

I watched it for the first time (sic) yestarday. I don't know what to think of it, I expected something less campy. First third of the movie is driven by the narrator and I felt I was watching a long trailer - an old school one, with very long shots, but a trailer. Although Arnie doesn't talk much during this part (two short sentences at most, plus "Crom" twice and lots of grunts), he manages to have 3 sex scenes (for a moment I thought I am watching big-budget soft-core porn). Fortunatelly, the movie gets better when the characters embark on a mission to save the princess.

Overall, the movie isn't particularly great and I wouldn't change it for any of LotR pictures. What I liked the most was the technical aspect of it. Cinematography was stunning, so was production desing and locations in general. Last but not least, the score kicked ass and helped to sustain my interest in the movie during the corniest moments.

Viewed The Shining again, for the benefit of the g/f who hadn't seen it. Brilliant as ever and the almost unlistenable 'score' remains as terrifyingly effective as it did back then. 5/5.

It's a semi classic, helpen enorously by the visuals, the music and the fact that the writer and director took this pulp hero and his world seriously

That's my favourite thing about the film (aside from the music and Gerry Lopez), that they took the concept dead seriously.

Conan 1 is one of those films that is pretty bad, but somehow manages to be quite good. Like The Running Man.

Its no surprise that Arnie figures in both. The music is memorably effective in both movies too, though for amusingly contrasting reasons. Here's a tip: One score is brilliantly shit.

Another bad but good movie is No Escape, though I can't remember if the music is any good in that one.

The Wire 4: Fantastic! It's bold and ambitious and maybe the best season yet. It's actually not a cop show, it's about Baltimore, the city. The most amazing thing is that there wasn't even a 'special team' this time. I'm looking forward to watching the final season (which I already have on DVD).

I tried my best to get into that show, but the broad accents made it a chore so I gave up.

You mean the slang they use. It's addictive. I confess though, I watch it with subtitles on. Funny thing is, I watched a bit of the extras, even the scripts come with a dictionary.

I understand the meaning of all of the slang spoken by the characters, but understanding the actual verbal delivery of said slang was hard work.

Yeah, right.

Seasons 4 and 5 are my favourites. Fifth, as you might expect, adds yet another layer to the whole thing and finds a great device to tell the the last chapter of this story. Sardonic and almost satirical, in these the words I'd describe the final season.

Karol - who can't find a worthy replacement for this show.

I've already seen the first two episodes but I need to get used to the guys from the newspaper (all new faces).

If you're just looking for more brilliant TV series, I highly recommend Mad Men.

Not so brilliant but very pleasurable is The Tudors.

Yes isn't it fantastic!! Just to think everybody thought Chase couldn't possibly follow Sopranos with anything as good! Shorts well and truly being eaten.

Inglourious Basterds

Quentin Tarantino is back, although he never left, and is better than ever. If you don't like dialogue and find conversation boring, and I can't imagine who wouldn't if you're a fan of film, then don't see this movie. Out of the 150 minute running time, there's probably 30 minutes of actual action. So don't let the advertising fool you. Loved the soundtrack, which is chock full of Morricone. Acting was great, cinematography was great, pretty much all of it was great. We may finally see Tarantino's name at the Oscars again.

Hehe, you managed to highlight the two things that film (moving images) doesn't really need and vice versa.

Excalibur: When I first saw the film in 1981, I wasn't a big fan because I thought the acting was somewhat cheesy. A few years later, when I watched it on TV, I thought John Boorman's movie was simply great. I was stunned by the photography and completely fascinated by the legend of King Arthur. Seeing it again after all this time, I must agree with the naysayers of this film. This film is unadulterated kitsch! It's almost worse than Boorman's Zardoz! There are still some things I like about it, but in general, I would say that it's time for a new Excalibur adaptation. Strangely enough, this was the first time I thought Hellen Mirren was sexy (I guess I'm getting old).

Tarantino's films usualy rely more on dialogues than action scenes (apart from Kill Bill p.1). As long as his dialogues are established around some kind of story, I don't mind it. So far only Deathproof seemed devoid of any plot.

I love Death Proof.

Karol

I admit, it was enjoyable. But unlike his other movies, this one didn't have any story whasoever. 90% of the movie was about girls having a good time in bar or restaurant. When I was watching it, a thought occured to me that I could actually have met my own friends instead, spend that time in similar way myself. Of course, in Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs we also had character talking a lot, but there all of it seemed to serve the story, no matter how pulpy the story was.

I thought that was exactly the intention. To make it as unprofessional and pulpy as possible. That's exactly why I love it. :)

I would say that it's time for a new Excalibur adaptation.

First Knight! Wait, no. That wasn't too good.

King Arthur... no, damn. That was worse... um The Last Legion! No that was terrible too.

Gee, have there been any good screen adaptations of Arthurian legend, besides Disney's The Sword in the Stone? I guess Knights of the Round Table with Robert Taylor was pretty good. I don't remember it being anything great though.
