Mark Snow's THE X-FILES scores (Volume 4 coming Tuesday December 1st)

He couldn't handle it.

That's correct, my head exploded when hearing all this awesomeness!

Just to get it out of the way, I'll start off with some criticism first (but I don't want to post this at FSM because they deserve all the applause they can get and it would be misinterpreted over there anyway):

- Considering disc space is so precious with this project, there are a few track choices that really surprise me: a (very minor) few tracks I have no idea why they've selected them (there's even one or two tracks with tracked music; or maybe they let themselves be guided too much by the 'moment' in the series and not by the music; and I'm guessing Mark Snow had a lot of say in this too), coupled together with a few wéird omissions from the selected episodes (from Triangle for instance). I can see, I think, how they bound themselves to not having a season cross discs.

- As someone posted already, I don't know what the deal is with the theme remixes; two of them are just edited-down versions of the Truth & the Light track (I think - unless there's a story behind them?). And they put that on instead of the early mixes of the main title. But I hope they're leaving that for Volume 2.

- A few weird small mistakes that I can't fault LLL with but which I can't believe nobody involved in the project picked that up during proofing: the Season 7 main title is obviously not the Season 7 main title. And Larson for instance writes that the use of the X-Files theme in Jose Chung is one of the rare instances of this: however, this is known as the first use of it, and from then on it got used now and then, really. I mean, I can't be bothered by these small things at all (just the perfectionist in me wants to put it out there I guess), I just wonder how these things were overseen - I'm not an X-Phile myself by any means but this is all pretty elementary I guess.

OK, glad I got that out of the way, because the set really is brilliant. There's so much variety in the music as well - you can really tell Mark Snow and LLL really did their best to have this form a coherent listening experience with a bit of everything sprinkled in. Track selection is also for 90% really great, something which I thought beforehand would be impossible to do considering the amount of music everyone wants included.

A few personal things:

- I'm so happy I've got that short piano motif from Nisei that was on Truth and the Light with dialogue.

- Standout track is obviously the one from Triangle: best build-up track of the set, and an awesome theme.

- There are a few very long tracks in it, and when listening to it, it's like they're only half of the length - that speaks volumes about the music I guess.

- This is another thing I was hoping for: a good deal of tracks feature that awesome piano work from Snow (I mean, where the synth instrument is the piano itself, obviously).

Finally, I can see how people here didn't order it because it sounds too synthy - but I'm not a fan of synth myself, but this is certainly not your casual synth work. Snow really does something with it - it's most of the time not a replacement for an orchestra at all. (But a nostalgic connection obviously helps.) Highly recommended!

Can't believe this hasn't reached low-quantity-alert yet.

So, what do you think of the truth?

Curious to hear your thoughts on it too!

I think MV said they sold around 1800 copies within a week. Not bad. And at least that means it will be around for a bit for others who stumble upon it later.

I will post my thoughts once I finish a few projects related to it.

Oh I totally agree - as long as it sells good enough for more volumes.

What are the projects if I may ask? Chronological order etc.? I'm compiling my own editing guide too, but I may wait for it until Vol 2 comes along.

I'm doing chronological order for all available releases, yes. Also, finding some source music and combining that with some cues (not many, just some) as bonus tracks. For example A Gift and A Merry Little Christmas from The Ghosts Who Stole Christmas immediately springs to mind. In short, just creating a more complete album of music from the show.

Mine came in fine, no cracked teeth or messed up disc 3. It's really a very well presented set, and I'm glad I bought it. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get it after Prom cleaned me out!

Also, in the liner notes, it says the piano in "Closure" from "Jose Chung's From Outer Space" is Chung's theme. Is this the same theme from "The Writer" in "Jose Chung's Doomsday Defense" from Millenium? They sound similar but also different...

The Volume 2 box set has been pushed back to 2013:

Can you remember how the first volume got pushed back and back again.

Maybe its the same problem here. I don't think it's the will of LaLaLand or Mark Snow but the licensing and approval of the artwork and everything around.

Lets hope the best, so that we can hold the 2nd Volume in hands at least at Christmas this year.

And no "Release Thriller" like the first volume from summer - to fall - to spring - to summer - to next summer - to fall - to May 2011 ;)

Let me just clear this up -- the first volume did not get pushed back -- Mr Snow let the beans spill a year early on this project and we had to deal with the fan repercussion.

As for Volume 2, it will be arriving first quarter 2013. This Trek Set has taken up a lot of our time and financial resources and projects like X Files Vol 2 had to be pushed back to a later date.

The only remaining "box sets" you can expect from LLL in 2012 are DS9 and TOS.

The action music in the Season 8 finale when they throw the super soldier in the trash compactor is awesome. It really disappointed me when it wasn't on the first set and that nobody is mentioning it. It's one of the better scoring moments in the show, I think.

I don't go on FSM's website, but somebody should suggest it there.

Too bad LLR doesn't have a few more employees to work on their soundtrack releases, and maybe charge an extra $10 per set to offset the wages of the extra help.

Oh wait...

I will definitely buy this when it comes out, but I (for one) am glad it'd being delayed for a while. It's going to take some serious scrambling for me to afford the Trek box set, so I'm happy to not have to worry about buying this set first.

This keeps getting postponed. I really hope they put more music from "Triangle" on it this time. I certainly did my share of whining for it!

This keeps getting postponed.

Unfortunately that's the way of life with the labels. MV has no control over things that have to wait to be approved, whether be artwork or whatever.

Just in time to mark the classic tv show's 20th Anniversary, La-La Land Records and 20th Century Fox are honored to announce the second Volume of music from THE X-FILES. I'd have to preview this more 'thoroughly' before considering buying - I made a 100 minute set from volume 1, so it would need to be at least as good as that.

Tried to watch the show a few years ago, but I found that if the alien or 'thing' of the week wasn't interesting, then the whole episode went down with it. I reached maybe halfway through season 1.

You didn't go beyond season 1?

Because I have to tell you that the show really just begins in earnest in season 2. Towards the end of season 1 there is some very good stuff, but s1 feels sort of rough and clumsy in parts. And I'm saying this as a fan. The second half of season 2, all the way through 5 and also 6 are where the heart of the show lies.

La-La Land Records, 20th Century Fox and 20th Century Fox TV Records present the world premiere release of acclaimed composer Mark Snow’s (THE X-FILES, MILLENNIUM, BLUE BLOODS) original score to the 2016 FOX special limited series presentation of THE X-FILES – THE EVENT SERIES, starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, and created by Chris Carter. The X-FILES made an exciting return to television last year, with an event series that marked its first all-new TV episodes in more than a decade. Returning with the show he helped immortalize, composer Mark Snow once again thrills with new music that would ensure the original X-FILES magic was still intact. By turns chilling, dramatic, propulsive and emotional, Snow’s score leads the show’s plot, characters and atmosphere in its unwavering search for the Truth. Produced by Mike Joffe and Mark Snow, and mastered by James Nelson, this special 2-CD presentation, limited to 3000 units, assembles the musical highlights from this six-episode television event! Exclusive, in-depth liners by writer Randall D. Larson take you behind the episodes and their scores -- and series creator Chris Carter contributes a special message. Okay, "X-Philes" La-La Land is planning one last 4 cd set of X Files music to release later this year or early next. Our producers wanna know what music is left unreleased that you would like to see on our final farewell set. It can come from episodes we already covered in previous sets as well as episodes we have never released music from.

(Please note we hope to release Season 11 separately this spring so do NOT include any suggestions from those episodes)

The music is out there!

We are gonna try and push some more season 1 stuff, even though Mr Snow does not think it's his strongest material due to the constraints of the technology at the time. Personally I love it!

Also, gonna see if we can license some 3rd party tracks to incorporate into the set for you completest. Fox okayed it, just need to get Mr Snow on board!

Red Right Hand too

Between several Nick Cave CDs and various soundtracks, I have Red Right Hand in so many places that, selfishly, I hope this is one they don't take up the space by licensing

I wonder if they'll revisit certain X-Files episodes in future boxsets? Episodes like The Red and the Black are missing crucial cues like when Scully's having recollecting what happened on the bridge when the aliens attacked. It was such eerie and effective scoring, I would love to have heard that on its own.

By the way, can anyone else confirm whether The Pine Bluff Variant on The X-Files Volume 3, Disc 2, Track 18 at around the 3:54 to 3:55 mark has any crackly distortion? You might have to turn it up to hear it.

I just want to know whether I got a bad disc or was there a problem in the mastering stage.

What is that last track all about?  I don't remember an a capella version from the show, but then again season 11 was very forgettable overall :p

It's these guys, found it on YouTube. How much money exchanged hands for the publicity?

Is whistling a legal acapella technique/instrument when it's the same instrument as the original piece?
