We kick off our JERRY-ASTIC month of June with not 1, but TWO fantastic scores by the Master himself!

STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE (3-CD SET)

Music by Jerry Goldsmith

LLLCD 1207

LIMITED EDITION OF 10,000 UNITS

RETAIL PRICE: $34.98

Album Reissue Produced by Mike Matessino and Bruce Botnick

Album Reissue Producer for Sony Music Ent.: Didier C. Deutsch

Mastered by Bruce Botnick and Mike Matessino

Liner Notes by Jeff Bond and Mike Matessino

CD Art Direction by Jim Titus

La-La Land Records, Sony Music and Paramount Pictures boldly go where no soundtrack reissue has gone before with this deluxe 3-CD set of 1979‘s STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith.

The first big screen voyage of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock was a high budget and ambitious undertaking that introduced Goldsmith’s famous and enduring Star Trek march (later used as the main theme for Star Trek: The Next Generation) as the cornerstone of an epic science fiction musical odyssey. Like the film’s refit starship Enterprise, La-La Land’s lavish presentation presents the score anew: fully restored, remixed and mastered from the first generation multi-track masters by Bruce Botnick, the original album co-producer and Goldsmith’s long time scoring engineer.

“To put together the complete score the decision was to go back to the original Analogue 16-track 2-inch 30 i.p.s. masters,” Botnick explains. “John Davis at Precision Audiosonics baked each of the 37 rolls in a convection oven at 110º for eight hours so that they were playable, then rolled out a marvelous 3M 56 IsoLoop 16-track machine with brand new heads. The tapes were resolved at 60Hz to maintain the original orchestral pitch and sync. The Analogue-to-Digital transfer was done from the 16-track through the latest Black Lion A/D convertors and recorded to Pro Tools X at 192kHz 24-bit.”

This 3-CD set presents the score for the 1979 theatrical release (filling disc 1 and part of disc 2) and also premieres the legendary early “rejected” cues that Goldsmith recorded prior to composing his famous main theme. The 1979 album program (much of which is performed and edited differently as compared to the film) completes disc 2, with disc 3 offering additional alternates (including those heard on the previous Sony expanded release) along with a wealth of bonus material. Among the highlights are a collection of early takes of the “Main Title” (including extensive stage chatter), isolated segments featuring Craig Huxley’s famous “blaster beam” and assorted synthesizer excerpts, the domestic CD debut of Bob James’ disco cover version of Goldsmith’s theme and Shaun Cassidy’s vocal version of the love theme, “A Star Beyond Time.”

Reissue co-producer Mike Matessino (who handled restoration and editorial efforts) collaborates with Jeff Bond on the thoroughly researched album notes which feature interview excerpts by Goldsmith, Botnick and performers Huxley and David Newman. The clamshell packaging and 40-page full color booklet are designed by Jim Titus.

“It has been an honor to be able to work with the original recordings of this music and to document its production,” Matessino says. “This is one of the greatest scores of all time and everyone involved took the responsibility very seriously and happily devoted months to see it come together. The clarity and quality we now have is truly amazing. Thanks to the efforts of La-La Land Records, Sony Music and Paramount Pictures, the end product is an embarrassment of riches and a ‘must-have’ for every film music and Star Trek collection.”

Next up, another classic score by Jerry Goldsmith – this one making it’s world premiere debut

WARNING SHOT

MUSIC BY JERRY GOLDSMITH

LLLCD 1204

LIMITED EDITION OF 2000 UNITS

RETAIL PRICE: $19.98

Album Reissue Produced by Lukas Kendall

Music Stem Restoration by Michael McDonald at Private Island Trax

Music Stem Transfer by Johnny Davis at Precision Audiosonics

Mastered by Doug Schwartz at Mulholland Music

Liner Notes by Jeff Bond

CD Art Direction by Dan Goldwasser

This fascinating release is brought to you courtesy of La-La Land Records, Paramount Pictures and Capitol Records. For the first time ever Jerry Goldsmith’s moody, jazzy score to the 1967 cop thriller WARNING SHOT comes to cd. Tracks 1-16 of this release feature the premiere release of the original soundtrack recording. Unfortunately, no scoring masters survived, and the only source for this recording is the film’s monaural music stem. Rising and falling volume levels have been smoothed out – but this results in varying levels of hiss. In addition, low levels of sound effects and dialogue “bleed” can be heard from adjacent channels from the film’s audio masters. These have been minimized, but not entirely eliminated, with a light stereo ambiance added to the monaural source to improve listenability. In other words, it’s like our previous release of SECONDS.

Tracks 17 – 27 feature the Si Zentner Album remastered from the original ¼ inch stereo album master. Tracks 17-22 feature Si’s interpretation of Jerry’s score while tracks 23-27 features Si’s interpretations of famous themes of Jerry Goldsmith, included Man from UNCLE, A Patch of Blue and The Prize.

Both cds go on sale Tuesday June 5, 2012 at 1 pm pst at www.lalalandrecords.com and other fine online establishments.

See y’all next week!

Don't forget HOOK, 1941, Home Alone, the MOH box set, Mars Attacks!, Speed 1 & 2, Copernicus Star, The Fugitive, Krull, Innerspace....

mmm i've been thinking....

Would the Jurassic Park Operation Genesis videogame soundtrack have anny appeal to customers? Or to MV? (making it a limited 1000 unit release for example)

It's a great score, and according from what the composer told me, i think he has the master tapes. The only way to have a lossless version (and the opening cinematic music) would be working with those. It probably has some 'Universal' rights, but maybe the music is 100% propiety of the composer...

La-La Land and Intrada are pretty much neck-to-neck in terms of awesomeness.

That's only if you buy everything released from Intrada.

Well, it's a bias thing. If you lean more towards 80s-90s material, you probably prefer LLL; if you like older scores, Intrada. Not that that's what they release exclusively, but you can definitely tell a pattern.

I probably prefer LLL deep down, the stuff they release is just so close to my personal taste. I mean, nothing can beat that MOH box for me. But Intrada is just smashing it out of the park every other week. The Disney line has really boosted them up there for me.

LLL has had more high profile releases lately, but Intrada is the one that has been consistently been breaking new ground. I do tend to buy more from Intrada than from LLL though, my tastes skew more toward what they offer. The LLL Golden Age releases so far though have been awesome.

I think LLR's releases steer more towards mainstream and nerd territory than Intrada or even FSM do. This is apparent with their popular scores of ID4, MOH, The X-Files, two Star Trek films and some TNG material, all the Batman scores, all the other Elfman, and other stuff I can't recall off the top of my head.

That's not to say that Intrada hasn't released their share of nerd scores: Back to the Future and two other Star Trek film scores. And FSM has rounded out the other two classic Star Trek film scores, plus the giant box of TNG material and The Goonies Gremlins, among others. A lot of Intrada and FSM's other releases have mostly been to older more obscure films or from artists that most nerds don't follow.

And then there's Varese, who aside from The Goonies and a poorly appreciated Star Trek XI album, doesn't steer much into nerd territory. Unless you consider Spartacus nerdy.

Well the Varese release of Goonies was actually REALLY good. I'm pretty sure it wasn't missing any cues from the film at all, featured amazing sound, and even bonus tracks and a nice booklet. I think it had, what, 5,000 units? Didn't last too long, though. Glad I got one.

warningshot-Web.jpgLa-La Land Records, Paramount Pictures and Capitol Records presents the world premiere release of Jerry Goldsmith’s original film score from the 1967 Paramount Pictures thriller WARNING SHOT, starring David Janssen, Ed Begley and Keenan Wynn, and directed by Buzz Kulik. This CD marks the first time Goldsmith’s thrilling, original WARNING SHOT film score tracks have ever been released. While WARNING SHOT’S score masters are lost to the ages, tracks 1-16 of this release were rescued from the film’s monaural music stem. Fluctuating volume levels have been smoothed out, but some hiss is audible, as are occasional low-level sound effects and dialogue bleed from the film’s audio masters. All of these have been minimized, with light stereo ambiance added to improve listenability – much like our well-received release of SECONDS. Also featured on this release is the Si Zentner album, remastered from the original ¼ inch audio master. Tracks 17-22 showcase Si’s interpretation of Goldsmith’s WARNING SHOT score while Tracks 23-27 features Si’s versions of other famous Goldsmith themes, such as MAN FROM UNCLE, A PATCH OF BLUE and THE PRIZE. Produced by Lukas Kendall, transferred by Johnny Davis, restored by Michael McDonald and mastered by Doug Schwartz, this special release features exclusive, in-depth liner notes by film music writer Jeff Bond and is limited to 2000 units.

Howdy, y’all

On June 19, 2012 at 1 pm PST La-La Land Records saddles up and heads out West for not one, but TWO Jerry Goldsmith Westerns.

STAGECOACH/THE LONER

Music by Jerry Goldsmith

LLLCD 1215

Limited Edition of 2000 units

Retail Price: $19.98

Produced by Nick Redman and Mike Matessino

Mastered by Daniel Hersch at d2 Mastering

Liner notes by Julie Kirgo

Art Direction by Jim Titus

The first hombre coming down the trail is the score to the 20th Century Fox’s 1966 remake of STAGECOACH. This rousing adventurous romp was originally released by Film Score Monthly back in 1998, but is now out of print. For this newly remastered and expanded release, Producers Nick Redman and Mike Matessino located the original score elements, including the missing banjo overlay and 10 extra minutes of never-before-released music, and have given new life to one of Jerry’s finest western scores. Detailed liner notes by Julie Kirgo and fantastic art direction by Jim Titus round out this incredible looking package. As an added bonus, two scores from the short lived tv series THE LONER are included in this 56 minute presentation.

RIO LOBO

Music by Jerry Goldsmith

LLLCD 1221

Limited Edition of 3000 units

Retail Price: $19.98

Produced by Ford A. Thaxton

Mastered by James Nelson at Digital Outland

Liner notes by Jeff Bond

Art Direction by Mark Banning

La-La Land Records and CBS are proud to announce the reissue of another classic Goldsmith Western score – RIO LOBO, starring the one and only John Wayne.

About a year ago I was going through my Goldsmith collection and realized I missing Prometheus’ wonderful RIO LOBO release. I immediately jumped online and went to eBay only to discover the cd was going for $60.00! I said, “The hell with that! I’m not paying $60 for a cd. . .but I will pay several thousand to license it again!” (Sometimes, it’s good to own a record company.)

Please note: This is not an exact reissue -- the sound has been improved and tracks have been added/shuffled around. For this release Tracks 1-14 feature the score in mono. Tracks 15-24 features various source cues recorded for the film. Track 25 is an alternate cue and Tracks 26-30 feature the only surviving stereo cues. This 78 minute long presentation contains in depth liner notes by Goldsmith scholar Jeff Bond and eye-popping art direction by Mark Banning that would make the Duke proud.

Both titles go on sale next Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at 1 PM PST at

www.lalalandrecords.com

and other fine online retailers

La-La Land has announced that after Stagecoach and Rio Lobo on June 19th, their next releases are the ones they will premiere at comic con (before selling on their own site July 19th); After that will come new titles on July 31, August 14th, and August 28th.

I found this title on Amazon.com that has an August 21st release date there. Since typically titles go up for sale on La-La Land's own website 3-4 weeks before the Amazon release date, I assume this is a July 31st title.

Presenting the original score to the acclaimed hit DC animated series Green Lantern - The Animated Series, currently airing on Cartoon Network. Composer Frederik Wiedmann fashions an amazing, pulse-pounding original score that propels the legendary Green Lantern to out-of-this-world heights. Packed with more than 70 minutes of thrilling super hero music from some of the show's greatest moments!

---- UPDATE!!

MV announced the other July 31st title:

So Green Lantern is indeed a July 31st title, then?

That's the plan along with USED CARS (includes both Patrick Williams score and the unused (mostly) Ernest Gold score) to coincide with the screening event we have planned that night

I clarified my earlier post.

The next La-La Land batch (after Stagecoach and Rio Lobo) will be first sold only at the San Diego Comic Con (which runs July 12-15), but then they will go on sale to everyone on Thursday July 19th on LLL's website. The next batch after that is Tuesday July 31 (Green Lantern and Used Cars).

So, did I read right earlier in this thread that about half the run of Star Trek is already gone? Should people that really want this but were just waiting for a few weeks later, due to just waiting for money reasons and the like, get this much sooner rather than later now? I'm thinking perhaps I should...

You read it in the Star Trek TMP thread but yea, MV posted on facebook that about half of the 10,000 unit run was sold in 57 hours. You can read the announcement at www.lalalandrecords.com

I doubt all 10,000 will be completely sold out anytime this year

Howdy, cowpokes. . .

We have a slight change in release date plans for RIO LOBO and STAGECOACH.

Originally these two titles were schedule to come out this Tuesday June 19 at 1 pm pst. . .

However, I have a new "limited edition" scheduled to come out that day now -- my son, MICHAEL CONNER GERHARD is going to be born. :)

So, we are going to delay the release for these two soundtracks until the following Tuesday, JUNE 26 at 1 PM PST

Thanks for understanding. They will be worth the wait.

MV

Wow, MV...there's going to be a...MC? How 'bout that!

A lil' McG! lol

He will be a better film maker though. ;)

La-La Land Records in association with CBS present the remastered re-issue of famed composer Jerry Goldsmith’s (PATTON, THE OMEN, BASIC INSTINCT, FIRST KNIGHT) original score to the 1970 western feature RIO LOBO starring John Wayne, Jennifer O’Neil, Jack Elam and Victor French, produced and directed by Howard Hawks. Aside from the improved sound of James Nelson’s meticulous remaster, this release is different than the previous Prometheus release in that tracks have been both added and shuffled around: Tracks 1-14 feature the original score in mono. Tracks 15-24 feature various source cues recorded for the film. Track 25 is an alternate cue and Tracks 26-30 feature the only surviving stereo cues. Produced by Ford A. Thaxton and featuring exclusive, in-depth liners by film music writer Jeff Bond, this re-issue of Goldsmith’s iconic score, limited to 3000 units, would make The Duke proud!

This was recently posted on La-La Land's facebook page:

Howdy, y'all!

First off, thanks to everyone who came out to Comic Con this year. It was our most successful convention ever!

Secondly, thanks to everyone who ordered yesterday -- it was one of our biggest release days in our 10 year history!

Our crew is working diligently getting all those ordered processed and shipped off as I type.

Our next release date will be July 31, 2012 at 1 pm pst. We have two cds coming out that day:

Used Cars

Green Lantern The Animated Series

Both cds will be signed by their respective composers and offered on our website starting July 31 at 1 pm pst (quantities are limited and a signed copy is not gauranteed)

Just a reminder: our screening for Used Cars is also on July 31st. We are racking up some great guests for the panel. We will keep you posted as we get more confirmations.

After that, the LLL gang is heading to Vegas, baby! We will be beaming down to the Star Trek Convention at the RIO in Las Vegas from Aug 9 to Aug 12. We will be selling our fine cds as well as discussing some of our upcoming projects. There might even be a panel set up with some of our producers to discuss their work on the various Trek soundtracks over the past few years. We'll keep you posted on that.

August 14 -- this is our next scheduled release day, but we are skipping this date so we can enjoy some of that Summer sun before it goes away this Fall. So, NO NEW RELEASES on this date.

August 28 -- we are back with a vengeance and hope to have 2 or 3 titles up for sale at 1 pm pst. As to what they are, who knows? ;)

Have a great summer. See y'all back here in a few weeks!

Followed up with this comment:

We shall be there with plenty of goodies...and perhaps with news of the biggest release in soundtrack history. ;)

One of the August 28th titles is obviously Die Hard: With A Vengeance by Michael Kamen. I wonder what the "biggest release in soundtrack history" is? It's obviously a box set, but for what?

Trevor Rabin's Armageddon, the Way Too Long and Unnecessary Expanded Super Duper Soundtrack Album Extravaganza?

Star Wars Hexalogy box set.

One can always be delusional. I hope this delusion comes true.

It could also be The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo: The Unfortunately Uncovered Even Longer Session Materials Box Set.

That's another good guess. Just part of me doesn't think "biggest" and Star Trek go hand in hand, now that all of the major film scores have been released and Generations has all but been confirmed. (Yes, I know which two remain, but their release is inevitable.)

Well that is a good guess indeed. Would certainly save my money and wallet though.

I can't think of too many things MV would put that moniker on.

All 22 James Bond scores

All 6 Star Wars score

All 6 seasons of LOST

I dunno
