Soundtracks, Compilations, or other recently purchased Music

One of my favourite things about visiting home for holiday around this time of the year is going to St Dominic's Fair in Gdansk where I always find some used old CD's dead cheap.

Oh and I also bought a mint cheap copy of this on Ebay:

Part of the reason I got some of those was on hearing that Sony Music had decided to stop licencing to third parties. I was on the fence about Titanic and Dances With Wolves for ages. Who knows if and when some of these will ever see another release.

I sort agree with Jurassic Shark. Quite enough of John Dunbar theme in that 75 minute programme. Are there any actual highlights left off the Sony album?

Went on a little OOP hunt and claimed these CDs:

  • Memoirs of a Geisha - John Williams in mint condition for a decent price. Always wanted this score, so I'm happy to have it - now just to wait for next year when LLL announces their expanded version...
  • Meet the Robinsons - Danny Elfman
  • Wall-E - Thomas Newman. The carboard packaging design is amazing, one of those times when I love owning something physical as opposed to a jewel-case.
  • Spectre - Thomas Newman (not OOP, but not in stores) Writing on the Wall by Sam Smith is fucking atrocious so I'm glad it wasn't included.
  • Doctor Who: The Snowmen and The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe - Murray Gold - the last CD to complete my Gold Doctor Who OST collection.

This is not actually true!

Which part? The instrumental was included, but the song itself wasn't, thank god. I can't stand Sam Smith.

The vocal style is unfortunate, but it has merrit.

Parts of the instrumental and the song I can tolerate.

My favourite opening of the new Bonds has been Casino Royale, now there's an opening song!

  • 2 weeks later...

Well soon I'll be able to tell for myself. I bought it mainly for the König der letzten Tage suite.

On the other hand I have a fondness for this Steiner score with is charming cavalcade of Americana stylings and melodies.

I hope you purchased a few copies to your janitor as well!

My janitor, he was last seen with your Nanny 30 years ago? Have you seen him them both?

Two weeks ago, taking advantage of Quartet's sale:

Last week:

Based on Jurassic Shark's recommendation in the other thread, I put two albums from this series on my list. I ordered the cheaper one (whatever happened to standard prices for Naxos CDs?). Turns out it was the "wrong" one. There's some fun stuff on it, but nothing that grabbed me like the the clip from the other album did.

That's a nice haul, @Marian Schedenig. OMD definitely got better. ORGANIZATION, ARCHITECTURE AND MORALITY, and DAZZLE SHIPS are all great works.

Well, I grew up with a compilation tape that must have been a precursor to the current The OMD SinglesElectricity (which was the first song on it) is still one of the quintessential OMD songs for me. Sugar Tax came out just when I used to listen to the charts (before I discovered John Williams), so Sailing on the Seven Seas has always been a favourite as well.

English Electric is on order together with the Mutter/Williams CD, so should arrive in September, and then my collection of OMD albums will only have two remaining gaps of 3 albums each both sides of Sugar Tax.

I'm considering to get the Cinema Paradiso. How are the other ones?

So you like the 20th century album better than this 19th century album. Nothing wrong about that! Personally, I particularly like these tracks:

...oops, that's more than half the album! :)

Good question!

Anyway, there's a Naxos sale at Europadisc until tomorrow!

Truth be told, I only ordered Cinema Paradiso to round out the order. I love the film and like the score, but rarely listen to it. When playing the new disc, I realised that there's something to the sound of the recording/mix that I find really grating, or unnatural and oddly balanced. The new release is faithful to the older one in that regard, so it may have improved sound, but it's character of the sound that I've got a problem with.

Nevertheless it's a very good score, of course, it's just that the old album was probably sufficient for me. (Different story altogether if you don't have that one, of course)

I've had the Griegs before, especially Peer Gynt of course, and I prefer both my Karajan and Järvi recordings to these.

You waited this long to buy Harry Potter?

I actually bought it when it first come out, but just now picked it up from SAE. I place orders from them and then have them held for me to pick up every once in a while. And they hadn’t received their shipment of the HP box sets from LLL the last time I was there (mid-December 2018).

I had my copy of Harry Potter set on 1st Jan this year and I only got around to playing it until last last week! And I've yet to play Chamber of Secrets. But I just opened my set of AI and have been playing this non stop.

So many releases and so little time. But it's fun. Got about 50-60 more releases to get to. All sealed up in my CD cabinet.
