I had stumbled across some Akira Ifukube recordings on YouTube and did some research to see where they came from.

Found the sources and decided to start with these 2 volumes.

Live in Vienna Live Edition. Thanks Deutshe Grammophon for making me repurchase this stuff but as a fan I had to get it all on CD. :P

This week I received from Amazon the "Masters of Film Music" edition of The Reivers

John Williams - The Reivers (Masters Film Music Edition) - Amazon.com Music

Now that I own both this and the 1995 Sony edition, a proper expansion is sure to be arriving soon... right!?

The 1990 Masters of Film Music release matched the original 1969 OST LP

The 1995 Sony edition added one additional track ("Reflections")

(dunno why they wouldn't embed)

People also say the sound quality is wildly different between the two.  I think people say the MOFM edition is better?

Yes, the sound is terribly muffled on the Sony edition, while the sound is perfect on the MOFM release.

I just finished listening to the MOFM CD and the sound quality was terrible.  It's muffled and full of clipping.  I can't imagine the Sony edition being even worse than this, good lord!

Time for a proper remaster!

Ah, then it makes sense to get both.

Not at all, the Sony release was an error. Don't purchase this release, look for the MoFM release and wait for a proper expansion.

This is a 1969 recording, don't forget it. At least it have the same quality as the Theme which is present on the Greatest Hits 1969-1999 Compilation... And it sounds great...again, for a 1969 score Master.

Company Business sounds like the leftover ideas from Die Hard, Lethal Weapon and License to Kill at times. Just enough to draw you in but never quite grabs you the way you want it to.

Good buy. Shame the CDs are housed in basic cardboard sleeves but at this price there's no reason to complain.

Karol

Too bad the liner notes are missing, and the Raksin and JW albums aren't included.

Well, the boxset is titled "Gerhardt Conducts"!

And concerning the SWs, @Jayis about to answer that they are on another label!

Gerhardt happily passed on the baton when the composer showed interest in conducting his own music. The album was produced by Gerhardt, so they could rather call the box Gerhardt's Magnificent Film Music Re-recordings.

Of course, he'd be wrong about that.

It's odd that the Raksin album isn't included when it was still part of the 2010 series of remasters, unlike the Williamses.

It wouldn't be the first time Sony made an obvious omission in a box set.

Yeah, I initially skipped this release because of the cardboard sleeves issue, but I've had to reconsider my position because of this forthcoming release:

Seems cardboard is here to stay, I might as well accept it.
