As brass players would say: It's a hoot!.

Also contains selections from Williams' An Unfinished Journey, which was the main draw of the album.

Wouldn't the full orchestra version be preferable?

There is of course the Williams conducted version of the American Journey that is available on the Call of the Champions album, which I do own, but as far as I know, there isn't any full orchestra version of the certain revised versions of these pieces (e.g. Williams revised the ending of the Civil Rights and the Women's Movement) available on any other recording.

I declare that the used CDs for sale on the platforms are overpriced. It's a market that's closing for me.

Capturing The Plane is a highlight of the FYC that wasn't on the OST (shame the ending is missing though)

I’ve enjoyed this deep dive and am open to suggestions for other favorites.

I can warmly recommend these two.

You find samples on disk 6 of the anthology. Especially Le Petit Garçon is great with that wonderful 25 minutes piece "La Guerre À 9 Ans".

In too many of Jarre's scores I feel like he's trying to subvert expectations, or to take an unnecessary ironic approach, or scoring against the picture. I haven't seen this film but my impression is it also to some degree falls in the subversion category. Anyway, it's nice music.

I must admit, the Jarre album that I enjoy the most is disk 2 of the Prague Lawrence of Arabia re-recording.

Apart from that I always think, each score I own contains good music, but a shorter selection of highlights would be better. Whole albums are often an uneven collection of the highlights, source music, repetition and stuff I don't mind.

It falls into "subversion", because the novel is subversive. The film is not as explicit as the novel, but it's still a very good watch.

The novel, by the way, is the finest novel written in the English language.

I love this set. It’s a shame it took so long for these recordings to get released. Performances and recordings are uniformly great. Only real complaint is that some of the selections could be a bit longer.

I prefer disk 1. ;)

And it's a shame they haven't been released again after the box went OOP!

Had 'evaluation' copies of these two... just ordering them on the official website.

We can never have too many Howard Shore scores in a CD collection.

So finally, I managed to get all the seven volumes.

I guess I'm late to the Party, as usual... but I just discovered these two re-recordings conducted by James Seymour Brett for the Television Special...

I'm usually not a fan of JNH's 90s urban drama/thriller scores like Grand Canyon, The Saint of Fort Washington, etc. The synths make it all sound terribly dated and cheesy, like pop music from the time. But GC at least had the Fanfare at the end that was quite cool.

That was kinda my take. I didn't think twice about not picking up the expanded edition and JNH is a composer whose scores I'd generally look to acquire when expanded (can't wait for Dinosaur!).

Just bought two digital albums from the Québécois wind ensemble OVMF.

The live albums feature their own arrangements, and the selections are quite nice. There are a few flubs here and there, but overall, they’re good!

I must clearly have missed something on Grand Canyon as, apart from the end credits fanfare piece, I remember the rest as just being twangy guitar music. Not bad exactly... but not quite magnum opus stuff.

You're not alone. The fanfare piece is nice, and there was one other track that I sort of liked for its atmosphere, but I really don't get the rest of the score at all. It's very dated.

The stars finally aligned at Intrada, as I thought it would probably take a few days after LLL got Sugarland back in stock.

Glad it's not just me on Grand Canyon - I remember when I had a minidisc player, I cut out the rest of the end credits and just had the Grand Canyon fanfare as a stand alone cue as it was the only bit I liked! I think I'd appreciate the rest a bit more now but not over and above his orchestral stuff.

The Post (FYC).jpg

Just received a copy of The Post (FYC) thanks to the FSM sell. Listening to it again and what a lovely score this is. I don't know which presentation I prefer between OST and FYC though

I still havent heard it even though the cd is with me. So is the FYC containing any or minute unreleased material or is it the sequencing you are refering to?

The sequencing is not the same and there's some unreleased material too. See @Jay's spreadsheet

It's such a great and varied score. May I ask how much you had to pay for this?
