JWFan 2009 Awards

John Crichton

Recommended Posts

Well, as we're close to the end of the year, and with hopefully no more surprises coming our way, I figured it was time to hand out our awards for the best of the year. With a new twist this year, the awards are called the Golden Mugs. As us older JWFanners will know, it's based on the One Mug that Andreas used to give out for large donations to the website. Our Grandedest Master Steef is the prowd owner of two! If anyone with Photoshop skills would like to make an image of the award it'd be very appreciated.

Here are the categories for this year:

Score of the Year (only original scores written in 2009)

Album of the Year (new score category)

Album of the Year (rerelease category)

Composer of the Year

Label of the Year

Cue of the Year

Please place your votes in this thread. The voting deadline will be midnight US Central Standard Time New Year's Eve/Day, and the winners will be announced first in a live chat at noon CST on New Year's Day, then posted in this thread.

What the hell, John?!

You better not steal my annual Oscar threads too! ;)

Actually though, this is pretty different than the ones I started where I tallied up all of your guys' nominations for best score of the year. So... I'm just gonna go back over here, to my table...

If something big does happen and someone wants to change their vote(s) that's fine as long as it's before the deadline, and probably best to mention it in a fresh post too.

And I forgot to mention that non-film scores, ie video game and TV, are perfectly acceptable to vote for too.

Don't worry Koray, your Oscar threads are safe. I thought I had a good idea and wanted to go ahead and jump in with it. ;)

Score of the Year (only original scores written in 2009) Star Trek

Album of the Year (new score category) Drag Me to Hell (this one was tough, Star Trek is annoyingly short at 45 minutes, Up didn't get a CD, so... yeah Drag Me to Hell it is)

Album of the Year (rerelease category) Back to the Future

Composer of the Year Michael Giacchino

Label of the Year LaLaLand

Cue of the Year Enterprising Young Men

I must say it has been quite a depressing year concerning new works. I think Giacchino pulled off some great stuff, as did also Alexandre Desplat.

Avatar I only listened once so far, but it didn't leave me any sensation of greatness--pretty ordinary Horner stuff, nothing more nothing less.

I was positively impressed by Yared's Amelia, but probably the most refreshing and exciting new work I listened to in 2009 is James Peterson's The Red Canvas--this guy has very good chops and promising talent, I bet we'll listen more good things from him in the near future.

However, it has been an amazing year for soundtrack re-releases from specialty labels and we got an impressive amount of stuff. Bless them, all of them.

So Star Trek II isn't anyone's album re-release of the year? How quickly we forget...

I think Back to the Future stole a bit of Star Trek II's thunder with an entire disc of alternate scoring sessions in addition to the complete score. I'm not particularly hardcore into either release, but Back to the Future is more impressive.

Do we have a (somewhat) comprehensive list of stuff that came out in 2009?

I agree. It would be helpful if we had a list of the "nominations" to choose from.

I fully agree with you with the exception that I haven't heard Corigliano's Revolution. But I'm sure it is more than worthy to be the rerelease of the year.

Well everything from the last year is eligible so it'd be a long list. ;)

Which is exactly what he did during his Kennedy Centre Honors ceremony, did you ever see that?

Heh, I had forgotten about that.

This was a tough one as far as Label and re-issue of the year was concerned.

BTTf seemed like the obvious and Airplane! was a no brainer but Star Trek II caught everyone off guard. I had a strong feeling that Intrada would be bringing us BTTF at some point given their prior releases of Amazing Stories, although I had no concrete proof other than speculation.

I know the Rozsa box set will be outstanding but it hasn't been released yet. FSM, Varese and LaLaLand really set the bar high this year but Intrada started off with a bang with 3 staright big Horner releases and then you throw in BTTF.

I also thought Exodus was a strong contender, perhaps another category "Re-recording of the year" needs to be added.

So without further ado, I present my choices:

Score of the Year (only original scores written in 2009) Up

Album of the Year (new score category) The Red Canvas

Album of the Year (rerelease category) Star Trek II

Composer of the Year Michael Giacchino

Label of the Year Intrada

Cue of the Year "That New Car Smell" from Star Trek

Your cue of the year needs to be a new one, Trent. :)

Oh d'oh..

Well to be honest I haven't heard any scores from this year outside of Star Trek. I really haven't been keeping up with new releases this year as most of my concentration has been for Limited Edition releases.

Album of the Year (rerelease category): Twilight Zone

Composer of the Year: Michael Giacchino

Label of the Year: Naxos

Cue of the Year: "That New Car Smell" from Star Trek

Regarding Up, I'm totally in favor of digital albums if this means more content to them on account of the saved expenses. Up was not perfect in the content department, but I want to give it Disney the benefit of the doubt with my support.
