James Bond 23: Skyfall FILM Discussion

If Newman wanted a stab at Bond, go for it. But I get the impression he prefers doing smaller movies.

Mendes' movies so far have been very character oriented and intimate. We have to consider whether Newman wants to do a Bond.

Here's Arnold's tweet... I wouldn't consider him officially confirmed!

That's disturbingly vague. I guess they technically don't need a composer until sometime next year, but they'd surely want to book them, schedule-wise sooner rather than later.

I wonder if Mendes is indeed fighting to get Newman hired...

Meh, Arnold already did that Matrix style combo of techno and orchestra a few years with TWINE before Don David/Rob Dougan did it.

He actually did a better job with it.

Yes!

I'm talking Bond song. I'd rather have Rob Dougan+David Arnold than...Britney Spears+David Arnold.

Should be Shirley Bassey + David Arnold this time, if there is any justice in the world.

If Arnold writes a song, he'll have to ask the producers if he should even bother if they're planning on going with someone else behind his back.

I wouldn't exactly judge movie by their budgets. Some people simply spend money more reasonably than others.

Agreed. I just find it interesting that it costs $65,000,000 less than "QOS", which suggests that "QOS" was successful, without being profitable.

Bond totally needs a Rachel Portman score.

You may be joking, but she can do it. She has plenty of dramatic works, from "Hart's War" to some action-y material in "The Manchurian Candidate".

Horner seems to think good of her, even recommending her for a film, and she was originally hireed on "Flightplan". Give her the chance, and you won't hear the bouncy woodwinds and light strings you think of from her.

Imagine something like this, possibly, over some ending scene after, say, a love interest is killed in cold blood, Bond over her body:

Thomas Newman to score Skyfall

Regular series composer David Arnold, who has scored five James Bond entries from "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997) through to "Quantum of Solace" (2008) will be busy in 2012 as he is the London Olympics musical director.

Some of his breif bursts of dramatic music in "Wall-E" could be construed as action material, especially if he scores this seriously and in a similar big fashion style.

Hmmm.

Could be interesting.

Could be horrible.

Guess I'll have to wait and find out when it's released.

Well, NOW I'm intrigued with a film that I can't muster up some excitement for otherwise.

Hopefully not a case of Serra reloaded.

Unlike Serra, I believe Newman will compose an entirely good score, not one filled with porn music and two-three good tracks.

It's not that.

I can never get excited for another Bond movie until a few weeks before its release.

The attitude of "I've seen them all" is weighing too heavy.

Slightly surprised (is there really that much music needed for the olympics?), but it's an inspired choice - I look forward to what Newman can do when he's asked for action.

He's done isolated cues here and there, but nothing sustained. It seems completely out of his comfort zone.

I'm not so sure Newman is the right man for the job. Listening to The Adjustment Bureau, I don't think Newman would compose the kind of music an awesome Bond chase sequence demands.

That, and I was really looking forward to another Bond score by David Arnold :(

Remember that Thomas Newman is a proper composer, far more versatile than you'd think. I mean, look at all the members of his family. And also that he's mostly typecast to do the same exact scores all the time. He's surely capable of delivering Bond goodness.

The question is, however, will they choose to follow that style.

To David Arnold mourners: I'm sure he'll be back after this one. Why wouldn't he?

Karol has a good point. The only reason he isn't back for this one is because he's busy with the Olympics, but he'll probably be back for the next one.

Still doesn't remove that feeling of disappointment though. Its quite likely Newman will approach the Bond film as he did with The Adjustment Bureau, and thats not what I want to hear from a Bond score.

Thomas Newman is probably capable of composing a good Bond score, just as he is capable of composing beautiful lyrical works as he did in the 90s. Its just its likely he will choose not to.

I hope I'm wrong of course.
