The Official Varese Sarabande Thread

Believe it or not, there are some music lovers who don't want or need every second of music recorded.

We used to be the majority before the c and crazies overthrew the existing order!😅

If you mean leaving out music, no I'm sure that would not have helped sales.

Can you prove that claim?

In my rush to order Presumed Innocent, I was a dummy and forgot to browse the sale.

Don’t be a dummy. Don’t be like me.

I had to place a separate order for this one that’s been on my list forever.

Themes and Piano Transcriptions $5

What if you want a new copy?

Well that can't happen regardless of the existence of an expansion so no point not to release the complete score

Plus lot of expansions do have a second disc featuring the original presentation so you can still have a new copy :P

Actually....

Westlake's take is the DEFINITIVE version.

Check out the special arrangement that appears only on  the rerecording.

I would have bought the VS if I hadn't purchased that one

A bunch copies of LEGEND by Tangerine Dream are appearing on EBAY.

Could this mean a possible VS reissue?

Is there alot of unreleased stuff?

I like this score. I had it but sold it because it paid $$ on the collectors market.

I'd gladly repurchase a DE!😁

Wasnt it expanded by quartet few months ago?

Goldsmith's Legend score was, not Tangerine Dream's

Except it wasn't expanded by Quartet, but Music Box (their first Goldsmith):

Since few month I'm really into trying to discover the huuuuuuuge Varèse Sarabande catalog, particularly their "re-recordings" and compilations.

Of course, many "essential" CDs (like some Herrmann's) are now a bit hard to get (their price is often... OHMYGOD, on some websites!), but I think I managed to start a nice collection.

Show some love for Varèse Sarabande, do you have any favourites among their re-recordings and compilations?

PS: The CD without spine is the Hollywood '96, is it only my copy which is like that?

John Debney did Superman.

If you want some great McNeely re-recordings track down Vertigo, North by Northwest and The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Also, all five of the Alex North discs conducted by Goldsmith are great (no matter what naysayers say) and, while you're at it, Goldsmith's own Patton/Tora Tora Tora disc is terrific too.

I also like Jaws. It's a different, more concert-like, recording that might differ in vibe from Williams' own. But that's what makes it unique.

Inspired by the "In session" compilation, I just made 3 playlists regrouping the whole albums of these incredible productions. Because if some of these CDs are hard to find today, they are available on streaming for our greatst happiness.

Hey Mr. Townson, what about a nice Boxset (part 1!) of your best re-recordings, including complete albums this time, for your 45th anniversary to come next year? And a second boxset for your 50th to come?

North by Northwest  is still on my wishlist, I maybe have to do another round on my websites, because the price of this one was very high lately!

It was, unfortunately, limited to 3000 units. :(

...The THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is very good,

Except for that fact they separated every damn cue.

The ost versions - all of them- tastefully combine cues

I wonder why Varese is well behind their recent yearly average of Club titles this year?

2020 - 9 titles

  • January - Dolores Claiborne & The Stand
  • March - US Marshals & The Big Fix
  • June - The Running Man & Seaquest DSV
  • August - Wild Wild West
  • October - How To Train Your Dragon & The Village of the Damned

2021 - 12 titles

  1. January - Looney Tunes Back In Action & Babe
  2. March - Along Came A Spider & The Serpent And The Rainbow
  3. April - Lionheart & Knowing
  4. June - Paycheck & The Matrix
  5. August - Dante's Peak & Love Field
  6. November - Elf & Blue Velvet

2022 - 5 titles so far

  1. January - Scream 1/2/3/4
  2. March - How To Train Your Dragon 2 & The Iron Giant
  3. May - The Bourne Identity & Presumed Innocent

Hopefully we get more Club titles soon!

I'm guessing we can never expect a Williams Club title again, now that they've had Mike make definitive editions of all 3 Williams scores they own perpetuity rights to (Cowboys, Stanley & Iris, and Presumed Innocent).

I still hope for Brainstorm by Horner to get the definitive treatment, but I don't think the colors in that imagine line up with it
