I guess these are the only clues we get:

boy does it have a story to tell! This is one release that has to stand alone. Film music is supposed to be fun and this one is a blast!

It "has" to stand alone

It has a "story" to tell

It's "fun"

For some reason I am thinking it is newer stuff, not Golden Age stuff, but I dunno

It could be multiple films in the set.

Someone on FSM suggested a Jerry Goldsmith / Joe Dante box set.

Does Townson usually give hints or clues? Can we read too much into his facebook post?

Yeah Varese doesn't much participate into that stuff like Intrada or LLL.

Some unreleased Bad Robot scores? Alias: Seasons 3, 4, and 5, Revolution: Season 2, Person of Interest: Season 3, and Alcatraz? One can dream...

Are we sure it's not The Ten Commandments? "Fun" doesn't really seem to contradict it to me, and the rest fits, if it's Varese's to release and if there's enough material to fill six discs (I'm not familiar with the score or its history).

Hmmm

I would guess this has something to do with the recent recording they did with Christopher Lennertz of a new suite from Michael Kamen's Brazil. So it will be some sort of compilation. That's only a guess, though.

and

Doubtful. The turnaround from recording to mastering and pressing, etc. would have to be damn quick for that to happen. And I don't see there being enough music for 6 CDs.

You want a bet? :)

I dunno who James Southall is; Does he work in the industry?

Anyways, Lennertz is conducting this Brazil suite for Varese's 1985 concert in June

Could also be a trilogy box set (two CDs for each movie).

Though it might not be seeing that he said it was a single release.

He could be using that term in a broad sense, as "music for something that was filmed"!

Then that settles it. Varese is releasing a boxset of porno soundtracks. That's fun, right?

Ooops! Varese put the order page for the title up early, and Google Cache caught it.

The 1980s were a fun, exciting time in pop culture ... and especially at the movies! 1985 in particular was a cultural lynchpin for a whole generation. We traveled through time in Back to the Future, hunted for treasure with The Goonies and hung with friends in St. Elmo’s Fire. Music was always part of the adventure; the film scores of Jerry Goldsmith, John Barry and Alan Silvestri, and hit songs by Oingo Boingo, Tina Turner and Brian Ferry instantly conjured up the characters we love from their movies.
Now 30 years later, BACK IN TIME... 1985 AT THE MOVIES 6-CD set, allows us to travel back and revisit 1985 At The Movies in a celebration of one of film music’s most iconic years!
Over six and a half hours of music including...

- All of the top 10 box office hits of 1985
- Academy Award winning and nominated scores
- Compilation of smash hit songs from the year

Very wacky. I have most of the music represented on the CDs, and zero interest in flying to SoCal for a concert.

That's a lot of effort into a product that... Who wanted this?

Only hardcore collectors or those who buy every release. I'll be surprised if this sells well...

Well I sure didn't see this coming. My wallet will thank me when I say pass to this. And I didn't have to think about it twice.

What the heck happened to you Varese? You used to be cool.

A lot of it isnt re-recorded.

this reminds me of Vareses anual compilation CD that they used to do in the 90's. A selection of music from that particular year. Some re-recorded, some from the OST if Varese owned the rights to it.

Back in the day these were attractive compilations but they really don't fit anymore in todays business model old super complete score releases. Varese continue to operate as they always have done even though the market has changed quite a bit in the last decade or so.
