Interstellar (2014 film directed by Christopher Nolan)

Movies (even those by Snyder) usually start out getting very positive responses. Will it be the opposite for Interstellar?

"Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" spends hundreds of millions to take the audience on a journey to the farthest parts of the cosmos ... so they can be told sentiments as close, and as cheap, as any of the offerings at your local Hallmark card retailer."

Hey, look, Nightcrawler (the new Gyllenhaal) has 86%! I knew it was going to be good! ;)

Well none of those clips really say anything conclusive yet. The film won't be a Second Coming or anything but, to be quite honest, things like 2001 were accused of similar things. Now, I'm not comparing it to Nolan, that would have been ridiculous. But the certain pomposity of concepts like this, especially if given huge budget like this, always inspires such comments. It's almost inherent to this genre, really. Pomposity, that is. Take it or leave it.

I don't know why that is, to be honest. They did a similar film with Inception, if you remember.

I'll be honest. My hopes are not that high this time. I'd rather Nolan went back to smaller cinema. But, at the same time, I'm excited to see a proper s-f film that uses CG with restraint and that's not part of any franchise. And it seems that it's going to deliver, in some respects anyway. Hope so, anyway.

Nolan's Interstellar 'a flawed epic' http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-29799816

Sorry GreyPilgrim.

Do you really think my anticipation for and ultimate enjoyment of this has been colored by lukewarm reviews at all?

Look back in the thread, this is exactly the sort of response I expected from many critics - and it isn't even "many" - the majority is quite positive, in keeping with the early Twitter craze if a bit more nuanced.

For fuck's sake, the import that people attach to reviews is just astonishingly stupid, whether you're a shitbrained Nolan fanatic who adds a slit to their wrist for every drop in the fucking tomato meter, or one of their equally hateful counterparts who wank themselves silly while gobbling up every bit of anti-Nolan sentiment they can find. All so unbearable. Hence my attempts at more or less leaving the internet.

Anyway, finally got tickets for the 4th. Most excited to see how the girls like it.

A good start to what? Nothing starts until I sit down in the theater. Until then, what else matters?

I'm getting seriously burnt out on trying to be a "nice" guy on the internet. If I'm going to stay I'm going to have to just start stating my opinions as fact and calling people who disagree morons, because these same old conversations are just so pointless.

No, unlike crocs, you already made up your mind. Trust me, you'll give it 5/5 or 4/4 or 10/10. Wanna bet?

I don't do numerical or star ratings. ;)

Now you understand Joey ;)

The man seems to be onto something, yes.

Actually, the somewhat mixed, somewhat pragmatic response has made me more intrigued about what this movie could be, made me wonder if it has a certain quality I wasn't expecting. Divisive movies are far more alluring to me than immediate critical darlings/sponsored hyperbole type movies, the sort that veritably come out a number of times a year.

Wasn't going to stop me winding GreyPilg up though, was it ;)

What quality don't you expect?

You usually knew when a movie is trying too hard, Quintus. Have you not watched the trailers?

I haven't seen any trailers other than the teaser months ago, so I still had a fairly open mind. I know little of the tone and style of the movie, other than I've been expecting it to be deadly serious and utterly humourless, being a Nolan film, Nah, my own reservations lay in my non belief in the Nolan hype, that's all. He's like Abrams to me.

Massively overrated.

Alex watched all Christopher Nolan films, probably all of them on big screen. And he'll see this one, too. They all will. There's just no escaping that. ;)

I've read every bit of info? KM doesn't know what he's saying.

I'll see it ... one day ... probably gonna stream it ... (but I'm not camping in front of the movie theater like KM & Co)
