Your FIVE definitive Goldsmith cues

Quintus

Recommended Posts

Themes, action music, lovey stuff, whatever, I'd appreciate it if you could list them here please (I need ideas for a long best of Goldsmith playlist). I'm particularly looking for that unmistakable Goldsmith style and sound, especially that high in reverb recording quality he loved so much.

Out of those above I already have the amazing "Rebirth" and "The Enterprise" in the playlist. Cheers for the other suggestions guys. Thinking about it, I'm really coming from a score cue perspective, rather than the more instantly famous stuff. Having said that, I'm always grateful for lesser known theme reminders and even discoveries. I've been given a shitload of iTunes credits so I'm planning on filling my boots ROTFLMAO

If it's that really powerful (and beatiful!) effect of reverb recording you're after, I'd recommend any of the shorter action tracks from The Mummy. ;)

"Taureg Attack", "Night Boarders", "The Sand Volcano" etc. Any of those.

Or you could try Air Force One, but I'm guessing you'll have already heard those cues. Although I'd still recommend "Escape From Air Force One". :P

Wow, this isn't easy, so much to choose from! But I'll give it a shot.

And bear in mind these maybe aren't "definitive" but my absolute faves...

The Enterprise - "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"

Bon Voyage - "The Russia House"

The Next Attraction - "Matinee"

Main Title - "Star Trek: First Contact"

The Gremlin Rag - "Gremlins"

I'm particularly looking for that unmistakable Goldsmith style and sound, especially that high in reverb recording quality he loved so much.

Based on this, it sounds like some of his stuff from later in his career (80s - 00s) you're looking for. In my mind, Explorers and Supergirl are perfect for that. Here's a few ideas...

A New School - Supergirl

The Map (Alternate Version) - Supergirl

The Flying Bumper Car - Supergirl

Open the Gates - Star Trek V The Final Frontier

Sticks and Stones - Explorers

First Flight - Explorers

Free Ride - Explorers

Fast Getaway - Explorers

State of the Art - Innerspace

Gas Attack - Innerspace

Disengage - Innerspace

Camelot - First Knight

And maybe not so reverb-y, but awesome nevertheless:

End Title - The Swarm

"Avalanch" - Mulan (Expanded)

"Camel Chase" - The Mummy

"The Parachutes" - Air Force One

"Main Title" - Star Trek TMP

"Suite" - Mulan

Since most of the obvious ones have been taken and Quint's looking for suggestions here's some that haven't been mentioned (and should be):

Ave Satani- The Omen

Main Title- The Wind and the Lion

Main Title- Alien

Leaving Drydock- Star Trek: TMP (a nice fanfareish contrast to the more lyrical The Enterprise)

Something from Total Recall, pick your favorite action cue

I knew I forgot one, Patton! I'd take the Intermission cue (great presentation of the main theme) and German Advance. See how hard it is to do just five!

Nobody has picked a bad cue, so now we'll get into the nitty gritty.

"The Sword Maker" from The 13th Warrior (I adore this entire score, but this is the most upbeat rendition of the Viking theme)

"Suite from The Boys from Brazil" from The Boys from Brazil (ok, so 20 minute suite is cheating, but it condenses the whole album)

"Overture (Twilight Zone Theme and End Title)" from The Twilight Zone: The Movie (ok, so the first part isn't original Goldsmith, but the transition into the triumphant fanfare at that theme's conclusion is great)

"A Busy Man" from Star Trek V (how can you not?)

"A Deal/End Credits" from Extreme Prejudice (the most melodic track on this album heavy with his 80s synthesizer sound)

Rebirth - from "Poltergeist"

The Road to Masada - from "Masada"

Flying High/End Title - from "The Secret of N.I.M.H."

The Enterprise - from "Star Trek"

Pilot Over - from "Rambo"

Damn this is pretty hard to choose...but if I had to they would be...

Star Trek The Motion Picture

The Enterprise

Air Force One

The Hijacking

The Mummy

Rebirth

Star Trek: First Contact

The Dish

Star Trek: Nemesis

Final Flight

Trent, the Final Flight cue, isn't that Joel Goldsmith?

Sorry Trent, I was thinking of the Phoenix cue from First Contact (oops)

Joel Goldsmith didn't do any music for Star Trek Nemesis. He did for First Contact and you're thinking of "Flight Of The Phoenix".

For me it is extremely hard to narrow his distinctive sound down to just 5, but here goes:

Killer Storm The Omen

The Hunt Planet Of The Apes

Breakaway Alien

Retreat The Blue Max

Breakout Capricorn One

I know I'm going against convention and even seemingly sacriligious not listing anything from his magnum opus "Star Trek - TMP", but for me these tracks encapsulate his career as one of Hollywood's, if not Film History's master composers. I can't believe that is is over 5 years since his passing. Imagine what he might have done for some of the films released since his death.

I think he would have retired anyway.

Just five? Okay, off the top of my head...

"Escape from Suberbia" from Poltergeist

"First Kiss/The Monster Storm" from Supergirl

"The Poppy Fields" from The Shadow

"The Second Coming" from The Final Conflict

"Pillow Talk" from Basic Instinct (oh baby)

You won't find the agressive, loud action cues on my lists though.

If you take the cue Breakaway from Alien, I don't like to listen to the first part but the haunting string passage in the second half is one of my favourite Goldsmith moments . I never knew where it fit in the film and thought it depicted the desolate alien spaceship

Well i'm glad KM at least listed Night Crossing, i'm surprised others haven't. Quint, you have to include Night Crossing, my absolute favourite Goldsmith with a glorious melodic structure and superb performance by the National Phil.

1. First Flight from Night Crossing

2. Patches from Night Crossing

3. The Final Conflict from Omen III

4. End Title from The Swarm

5. Main Title from Capricorn One

I forgot The Patches ..yes.

First Flight is awesome,at least the first 5 minutes of it . Did Horner rip off part of it for ST2?

Never really compared the two, quite possibly!

Hearing the main theme played tenderly by oboe and horn in Patches is just great isn't it!

Going through the list, I was surprised by how little came up. A whole bunch of the ones that were already mentioned are there, so I'll just add 3 of my own favorites from his later period:

Changes- Sum of All Fears

Bloody Christmas- L.A. Confidential

Radek's Death- Air Force one

I've probably missed it mentioned about, but my own favorite piece of Star Trek music he's written is Ilea's Theme.

My top-5 is;

"The Force Field"-Star Trek:TMP,

"It Knows What Scares You/Rebirth"-Poltergeist,

"The Final Conflict",

"The Search Continues"-POTA,

and "The Mutant"-Total Recall.

"Quintessential"? Oh, boy, that's a toughie. Add to any list:

"The Slaves"-Masada

"The Bees Arrive"/"Bees Inside"-The Swarm,

"Clever Girl"-Total Recall,

"Nightmare At 20,000 Feet"-Twilight Zone:The Movie,

"Raisulli Attacks"-The Wind And The Lion,

"The Monument"/"End Of The City"-Logan's Run,

"Marlin"-Islands In The Stream,

"Breakout"-Capricorn One,

As anyone can see, the list is almost endless

Seriously, "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" is freaking amazing!

You don't have Intrada's release of ALIEN??

Well, the liner notes of that set explain everything about every cue including what scenes it was written to sync to

My favourite cue from that score is The Mutant. Some spot on suggestions comin' in here, looking forward too to Mark's picks.

I wanted to wait and see what everyone listed because I figured most would go with the obvious cues but quite a few have stepped up to the plate and listed a bunch of good stuff.

There's still a bunch of cues I didn't even get to.

I always thought so.

Nobody mentioned Rudy (e.g. Tryouts or The Final Game) yet? Also, I'd pick something from Hollow Man (seriously) and Fireworks.

The updated Ave Satani from Omen II is worth a mention too. Goldsmith did some really cool stuff for the sequel before ditching it completely for The Final Conflict.

OMEN II is great full stop. The last cue 'All The Power/End Title' with the really ominous reading of Ave Satani and the big brass blasts is amazing. Although I thought it worked pretty well with him coming up with a new theme for TFC, as Ave Satani's unbridled fury matched Damien as a child, whereas the TFC theme is a lot more malevolent and a bit more mature, although it sounds totally like it came from the same places as Ave Satani.

Never been a fan of the Omen music, but I do appreciate and enjoy the scores within the movies.

Doiii!

I also think it's a bit shit that it was the only score which earned him his sorely sort after Oscar.

I love all the Omen scores. Rhythmically intense, wonderfully effective both in and out of the film. And TFC theme is fantastic, especially as heard in "The Hunt."

It's not completely gone from TFC. The lyric is still there, only developed towards "maturity" beyond recognition.

These choices may not be popular, but I stand by:

"Shootin' Up The Ritz"/"Alley Fight"/"Lock-ons"-Runaway,

"Main Link"/"Missing Link"-Link,

"Reaching Out"-Poltergeist II,

"The Costruction"/"First Flight"-Explorers,

"The Finals"-Hoosiers.

"The Family Arrives"-The Russia House.

Countless fucking amazing cues to be left off here, but I'll try to rationalize the ones I included:

CUE: "The Hijacking"

FROM: "Air Force One"

SAMPLE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhkXcfjwMy4

Show what was so great about Goldsmith's action writing. This wasn't random, franctic, crashing & bashing just to briefly glorify on-screen events, it was done with emotion to heighten the danger and urgency of what was happening.

Goldsmith said he always loved scored movies that required more peaceful delicate scores than action ones (one of the main reasons for turning down "Ronin"), but when he did do action scoring, most of the time of blew the shit out of most composers working in Hollywood during and after his reign.

CUE: "Tryouts"

FROM: "Rudy"

SAMPLE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlggRndVacU

Someone correct me if wrong, but as I recall, this was the cue that after it's performance, the orchestra stood up and applauded Jerry for like five minutes, all the while Sandy Decresant was trying to get them to sit down. And after the score was done recording, they did it again for like another ten.

This showcased Goldsmith's superior ability to turn beautiful, simple themes into soaring emotional compositions. Beauty, hope, spirity, adventure -- and that's just halfway threw the piece.

CUE: "The Dish"

FROM: "Star Trek: First Contact" (8th Trek film, second TNG movie)

SAMPLE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWxOCuk6rMs

Seven minutes. That's a long time for any compsoer, especially today's crop, to sustain a cue. Yet Jerry does it with no problem, and even seemlessly weaves in the Klingon theme, too.

This cue showcases Goldsmith's drawn out dramatic abilities and sense of how to subdue them and when to let them come to force. Again, with emotion at the core.

CUE: "The Celebration"

FROM: "Capricorn One"

Again, Jerry shows us his beautiful, simple themes. Here he begins it delicately, then builds to a heroic triumph and ends on nothing short of compositional grandeur. John Debney, Brian Tyler ... couldn't write something like this even if Jerry possessed their bodies.

CUE: "The Contruction"

FROM: "Explorers"

SAMPLE:

1980's was a special time. Fantasy movies with some heart and wonder were often made, whereas just a decade before, when they were made they kind of sucked; that's not to say some '80's movies didn't blow (when they blew, they BLEW). Anyway, this was one of those films that had a sense of innocents and wonder in it, and that's exactly what he instilled in the scoring.

This is a special link, as it shows the music as isolated against the scene in the movie it underscored; you get to see how he made it shine. The actual clip of the movie had little FX, so his score got to shine still.
