Tom 2,726
These three seem to be his three major works. I have left out the smaller pieces like the elegy and seven years theme.

fommes 126
Don't like Heartwood very much. It's a tie between the Elegy and the Memoirs Suite.

Tom 2,726
I suppose I should add my own thoughts. I prefer the Suite to the other pieces. I like the concerto and heartwood, but I find that the concerto lacks unity. It seems like four disjointed movements put together. I like the movements individually, but the collective experience is lacking. Heartwood is okay, but underwhelming. The suite, on the other hand, offers great thematic development and overall unity. We get a real sense of the expressiveness of the cello but also its ability to relate to other instruments. The duet with the violin in the third movement can stand proudly with any piece from the classical tradition, imo, and there is great interplay with the flute throughout but especially in the second and fourth movements. The whole piece just seems like a perfect synthesis of Williams's film and concert compositional skills.
KingPin 194
Just thought I'd mention that Hal Leonard will be publishing a cello/piano reduction of the Elegy for Cello and Orchestra with an anticipated release this month.

Miguel Andrade 964
The Cello Concerto. No doubts about it. It's my favorite Williams work. But the remaining works mentioned are all superb. I also have a deep connection with Heartwood.
