Popular Post Bayesian 1,363
Is anyone else super curious what Desplat has come up for the upcoming Barbie movie? I can’t think of anything he’s done that’d resemble the soundscape I imagine the movie would require (i.e., bright, bouncy, uptempo). But he’s got such great chops that I know it’ll be good regardless of the score’s style. Greta Gerwig definitely likes his work and appears to be knowledgeable about music and how to use it in film (https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/greta-gerwig-little-women-oscars-946360/amp/), so she definitely had her reasons for choosing him. Good on Rambling Records - Coupez ! was a remake of a Japanese movie (confusingly named the same thing in Japanese), so there's a bit of a connection there, but Eiffel seems to be entirely French, so this is a bit of a surprise (though welcome). Thor 7,495
I'm probably the only person who likes this composer switch. As I alluded to earlier, I felt this project needed an electronic score composed by electronic specialists, and given the new names, it seems likely that is indeed a possible direction for this. Popular Post Mr. Who 919
I think this has nothing to do with Desplat, as Gerwig has previously stated that she’s a big fan of Desplat’s music and style and he scored one of her previous films. As they are doing reshoots still and if the test screening didn’t go well then it’s not surprising that Desplat got fired. It’s the oldest story in film scoring, if the movie isn’t working close to the release date then they replace the composer and hope that it will make the movie better. So I don’t think this has anything to do with Desplat but more about test screenings (if they’re reshooting this late). I’m very disappointed about the news. Popular Post TolkienSS 407
I'm just listening to Deathly Hallows pt. 1. Man I forgot just how great a score that is. It's brilliant in fact. The opening two tracks are everything great about film music. It borrows from contemporary film scoring tropes but uses them in a great way, and the themes are just so strong and empathic with the film. I miss that Desplat. Knight of Ren 789
If anyone's interested in hearing a small compilation of the best the score has to offer, I did a small suite of my favorite parts of the score, with all the different sections of the main theme. It's a classic Desplat-Anderson collaboration, and while it tends to get a bit repetitive (similar to what happened with Moonrise Kingdom), it's a nice addition to their works together, and it has some really beautiful parts. Even so, Grand Budapest Hotel remains my favorite score of their collaborations! Mr. Who and Bayesian 1
JNHFan2000 2,959
I agree. It's nice, but for me is the same as The French Dispatch. Mostly just little variations on the same thing. Which even at just 19 minutes gets repetitive. Chewy
Popular Post Knight of Ren 789
Yeah, I guess it's Desplat's tendency when working with Wes Anderson, as French Dispatch and Moonrise Kingdom as well as parts of the other scores are similar in that aspect. It usually fits the film's visuals like a glove, but on a listening experience, it can be a bit repetitive. I wish Desplat could go back to doing a piece as exciting and intense as this one for a Wes Anderson film! Maybe they just decided they wanted more of link between the "score" and the original music.
