Sherlock (BBC)

I don't think the devil horns are coincidence. There's a shot later in the court room where Mycroft has angel wings and a halo as he looks down at Sherlock.

If the point is to shock us (and John) with a big reveal as Mary as a villain, then one would expect to have as little as possible pointing in that direction. Enough for Sherlock to plausible have some notions about it, so we can see him explain his suspicions with flashbacks from several scenes. So we can say "wow, I didnt see that coming?"

The devil shot does NOT fall into that category. There is no reason for it to exist other then to raise suspicion in the viewers minds.

But if they want to SHOCK viewers with a big reveal of Mary being an evil henchman, why seed the suspicion?

Or could it have been a joke, some sort of live versio of the devilish smiling smiley?

Not as interesting an interpretation, granted.

I have a hard time believing that Mary could be evil, or killed off, for one simple reason: In the original Doyle stories, Watson gets married at some point, and I don't remember there being any relevant problems in the marriage. So far, the TV series seems to mostly stay true to the original as far as character integrity and personalities go, so it would seem out of place to change the core of Watson's marriage.

Though they did show Holmes nearly going after the bridesmaid, when Irene Adler was supposedly the only woman he ever showed an interest in. Then again, that might be explained by that claim being made by Watson, who would hardly be aware of Holmes's near acting on the bridesmaid.

Of course, none of this prevents Mary from being involved in some as yet unknown agenda. But I don't really expect her to end up dead or in some way irredeemable.

Good points; Sherlock's intent to go see her at the end was surprising, though it probably was rather because he was hoping she could become his new Watson.

(She was cute, by the way)

That would suggest that the romance between John and Mary is not something that just happened, but planned for some purpose.

CAM presumably has some beef with Sherlock. And is using Mary. But if he had a prior relationship with Mary then he must have known Sherlock would still be alive, since they had been dating for 6 months before his return.

Would that not defeat the whole point of Sherlocks plan to disappear and be dead?

There might be a clue in the messages on Watson's blog (address reminded to us in the main thread: http://www.johnwatsonblog.co.uk/ ) regarding Mary.

The journalist did figure out Sherlock was still alive and on his way back home.

A spoiler-free preview of Episode 3

http://www.sherlockology.com/news/2014/1/9/his-last-vow-review-090114

I wanted to point out this completely safe to read point so nobody misses it:

When the end credits start, do not turn off your television or change the channel. Watch to the very close.

I always watch everything till the very end (the music is reason enough, as you fellow score lovers will understand), but thanks for the warning!

Samples from the soundtrack are up...

If you don't want spoilers for the finale, I would not listen to the next episode tracks.

Already did. Track 22 sums up everything you need to know!

The music as a whole for the entire episode is the darkest and most tragic yet for the show, track 22 particularly so. The Dense Strings of Tragedy™ (think RotS) are aplenty!

Same here!

Well, we got much of it right. But i'm pretty sure thats what Moffat/Gattis were hoping for. The devil shot and the telegraph werent even referenced in His Last Vow. So they were done purely for our benefit.

Clenched buttock TV!

BLOODY HELL!

The previous 2 eps contained moments of sheer exhilaration. All out belly laughs.

This was 90 minutes of edge of your seat in utter suspense!

Lars Mikkelsen was terrifying as Magnussen, he played the role basically the reverse of the sneering and screaming Moriarty. Total control, but with a viscous streak for humiliation. I figured John would be the one to shoot him.

Mary, of-course was sadly not a surprise, but it didnt need to be. her revelation was done fairly early and more of the starting point to the mysteries rather then the shocking conclusion. As always Freeman plays John as the most normal human being in the room, he anger and shock is palatable, but his forgiveness equally so. I'm glad Mary really isnt evil....just a psychopathic assassin with a dark past...

Lots of little touches from the Conan Doyle stories. Sherlock getting engaged was brilliantly done.

Interesting that the telegraph from CAM was never reverenced in the episode. Only, Mary doesn't seem to have been involved in the kidnapping

One might say that Magnussen was pretty damn lucky John fell in love with Mary, which gave him a pressure point on Mycroft.

Love the "trick" with the glasses.

Just thought of this:

IF...Moriarty is still alive....does that mean the solution Sherlock gave on how he survived the fall was false too?

Urgh.....

Mycroft made a reference to Casino Royale, in particular M. "As my colleague is sometimes fond of remarking, this country needs a blunt instrument".

Kind of disappointed that if already read here about Mary being dodgy, would have been a big surprise otherwise. It was all very clever as usual.

They obviously wanted us to at least suspect that. They put clues in the previous episode and this one that they didn't have to give.

the remark John makes about Claire De Lune being his wife's brand just before Sherlock walks in on her. No need to put that line there before we find out about Mary other then to create suspense.

That was a magnificent episode. My favorite of the whole show thus far!

Mrs. Blume and I both jumped/flinched when...

John casually said "Why is everything always...

MY FAULT

The man has incredible range in acting. From subtle to explosive.

Fantastic episode indeed! I'll write up more on that later.

But for now, I must ask; is it strange that for some reason ever time Lars Mikkelsen (who brilliantly portrayed CAM) appeared with his menacing voice, I kept thinking of Steef?

Nope, I too kept thinking through the whole episode that if Steef turned into a villain he would become Lars Mikkelsen.

I think that was their clever red herring. Make everyone think the twist is Mary, and then spring Moriarty on them.

To be honest, I'm a little disappointed that Moriarty's back (that's IF he's really back). It just doesn't seem right. Even a little, dare I say, cheap.

Exactly! Give Steef some new specs, and with the classic Bond villain look of his, he could have played Charles himself!

Now now, don't be too hasty. For all we know Mrs. Holmes, the closet genius, hacked the world with Moriarity videos to save her beloved son from a doomed exile.

WOW. The mind palace scene was magnificent. Redbeard brought a tear to my eye. How can this get better?

Ok fantastic episode. This break had better not be as long as the last.

I can't believe they started playing the end credit music, and the cut it short!

This was quite funny, though now I don't quite understand: am I missing something? My file didn't have anything at the end, after the end credits; or rather it did, but it was a trailer for some sort of adventure movie.

:\

If I am missing something, could somebody please provide a link, or explain it to me if no link can be found.

I thought the bit within the credits was surprise enough.

In any case, I love this series.

So...

this is what has become of Zhiva David!

;)

Can't we do without the spoilers? I avoid threads about things I have not seen yet if I don't want spoilers; they should be for references to something else, such as those to Game of Thrones I have seen here (I have not watched that series yet).

The bit with Janine was most unexpected and devilishly funny in the end. Quite a different approach to the character of Holmes.

Put me on record as saying I'm doubtful Moriarty is still alive. Seems like plan, planned before his death, like he's playing with people from the grave.

If he is back I'd be glad though, he's great.

If thought so.

They're too good to do the twin brother thing.

If it truly s him, what might the solution be? That's a lot harder to figure out than Sherlock's staged death.

He did just like they do in the movies? Fake gun and blanks with an exploding blood cap on the skull, counting on Holmes to be too distracted and distraught to find out? :P

"Lars Mikkelsen was terrifying as Magnussen"

(Stefancos)

Agreed. Creepy.

(T)He(y) made quite a fool of us all, with the hiding place of his vault and his trick glasses! Brilliant-- and obvious, in retrospect; the parallel was shown to us quite plainly, and Megnussen himself had talked about it at the very beginning.

The last scene in the vault was very nice.

Thanks for the Bond reference; I couldn't recall where the quote came from. Nice.

Magnussen's lair was rather fancy.

To be honest, I'm a little disappointed that Moriarty's back (that's IF he's really back). It just doesn't seem right. Even a little, dare I say, cheap.

Like...

McGyver's Murdoch, eh? But it was such a joy to see him every time! Different thing, though, of course.

That Wiggins feflow is an interesting addition; surprisingly clever.

What was that at the end?

(Mycroft) "don't be absurd. I'm not given to oubursts of brotherly compassion.

You know what happened to the other one.

"

To conclude, a very funny moment:

"I don't understand.

"You should have that on a T-shirt."

[...]

"I still don't understand."

"And that's the back of the T-shirt."

Wow. Unusual episode to an unusual season! Haven't read any posts here since before it aired, so sorry if I am repeating anything:

-What was redbeard all about? Are we supposed to know what that is, or is it a nod to book readers?

-I'm glad Mary will be sticking around!

-Charles Magnuson looks like Stefan Cosman!

-They should have put the entire Moriarty reveal after the end credits, instead of beginning the credits music, then having the reveal, then having essential nothing we hadn't already seen after the end credits

-So was it Charles Magnuson that wrote that telegram to Mary that Sherlock read at her wedding? If so, why did he do that?

-Is Sherlock redeemable? Did they push his character too far by having him commit cold blooded murder?

Hopefully I can read you guys' previous day's worth of posts now

Ah ok. I wonder how Magnussenwould have found that out?

And seriously, if every viewer here OK with Sherlock's murder?

Now that you bring it up, I'm not sure. Sometimes it feels like he's done worse, but it raises a good question. Why save Magnuson from Mary's wrath to only kill him himself? I know that was never the plan, but its almost like breaking that code of honour. Having Sherlock shoot him seems now almost like the cheap way out.

Yea. That's the one problem with the structure of the show. With only 3 episodes per season, you can built up this great character like Magnussen and then kill him off in the same episode. Were they doing six 45 minutes shows per year instead of three 90 minuters, they could have done more with him.

Also yea... Sherlock legit just shot a dude in the head. It's doubtful that things would have gone too wrong for our heroes had he not done that.

Of course, the bigger question is why did Mary even have Magnussen down on his knees instead of just killing him as soon as she found him

Sherlock, like it or not, is a high functioning sociopath. Season 3 actually makes of point of mentioning this in every episode.

If people can root for Dexter, or Walter White, or the scores of murderers on GOT, then why would Sherlock killing someone be an issue.

Watson shot the taxi driver in A Study In Pink, btw. And completely got away with it.

Of course, the bigger question is why did Mary even have Magnussen down on his knees instead of just killing him as soon as she found him

My theory on this.

Magnussen isnt only a blackmailer, he is a sadist, loves to humiliate his victims. Doubtless he humiliated Mary in some fashion and she wanted to gte her own back.

Or, she wanted him to give her the file she thought he had on her. (she didnt know about his mind palace obviously)
