Incanus 5,827
Well there has to be something appealing in the music in the first place for you to want to explore it further.Metsän tarina (Tale of a Forest) by Panu Aaltio: A delightful nature documentary score with highly melodic orchestral approach. There is a main theme which the Finnish composer weaves in and out of the setpiece type tracks where varyings moods and melodies intermingle and develop. As I said before Aaltio shows promise and this score further cements my opinion. This music well deserved the buzz it received during the release of the film. Hopefully the composer starts getting bigger assignments as when the results with a documentary are this enjoyable I would be glad to hear his talents more in a dramatic filmic setting. Of course you might suddenly have an epiphany about music you find initially annoying or inconsequential but there really, at least I feel, has to be some kernel of genuine interest to explore a piece of music, something that makes you say "hey perhaps I should not dismiss this off-hand right away". Often changing or maturing tastes can make you hear a previously incomprehensible piece of music in a new light years later and it will click with you.Simply listening to a piece of music 15 times won't probably make you fall in love with it. You might become familiar with it but if it doesn't have some appealing aspect to it, you most likely won't like it any more than on the 1st listen. Incanus 5,827
Unfortunately John Carter is recorded by Damn Wallin. I don't know how he does it but he succeeds sucking a lot of reverb and sense of space out of the music so that it becomes dry and a bit lifeless. Incanus 5,827
None But the Brave by John Williams: Inspired by Monuments Men I took another listen to this early dramatic effort by the Maestro. While not as thematically memorable as Williams' later creations this work has plenty to admire. Much of what would become the composer's stable techniques and stylings can be already heard in this music but some of it draws connections to the styles employed by the Maestro in the Lost in Space TV-series that also began airing in 1965 when this film came out. The impressive use of horns throughout the score is another notable feature. The finale of the score is a definite highlight both thematically and dramatically as it draws the surprisingly sombre score to a fulfilling conclusion. Wonderful that they had the chance to employ a real ensemble for this one. I like the music quite a bit and the game brings to mind the wonderful LucasArts adventure games of old in general feel and the witty humour. Even more wonderful considering they weren't planning for a live orchestra, considering the budget constraints. But one of the Kickstarter backers was the manager of the Melbourne Symphony orchestra and contacted them. That's perhaps one of the best aspects of the crowdfunding scenario: Schafer and Co have been in business long enough to have fans in all kinds of disciplines all over the world. And several of them contacted them on their own to ask if they could contribute (I think Elijah Wood, a life long Monkey Island fan, was another one). Ensuring that the result is a labour of love by most people involved instead of just another routine work for the paycheck. He's the same guy who did Grim Fandango, isn't he? That was a cool soundtrack. Yep (and it's a fantastic soundtrack, I still haven't found an original copy of it). Quintus 5,492
It's been years since I listened to scores as a pastime, actually. But the 'signatures' will always be there, ingrained in the memory. Which when said memories are of such high quality as the ones stored in my brain are, it sort of leaves little in the way of new material manoeuvre, sorry. Blame John Williams. The indelible bugger! KK 3,308
The Monuments Men by Alexandre DesplatOldboy by Roque BanosJaws 2 by John WilliamsWhat you think of Oldboy, KK?KarolRather underwhelming. Stylistically a bit aimless, meandering between a cool Hermann-esque vibe and a more contemporary tone (with "droning" aplenty). The main theme is made up from scraps of what he wrote for Evil Dead. But despite all that, it still has at least a good 15 minutes of enjoyable stuff to get out of it (the climax in "Bitter Sweet Revenge" is a notable example).I'll expand more on it later in upcoming review, but the big issue is that score doesn't quite know what it wants to be. And I guess that can be forgiven, granted that Banos really only had 2 weeks to write the score.
